  • Kalahari Bushmen (San) Cultural Experience

Day 1 to 2: Maun to Kalahari Desert Game Reserve, Botswana - camping

This Kalahari Desert Botswana Safari starts at 07h30 when your guide collects you from your pre-safari lodge in Maun.

From Maun, we drive south to a private game reserve in the vast Kalahari Desert of Botswana. This private Kalahari reserve is located on the northern border of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Arriving at the private game reserve we set up our overnight safari camp in the Kalahari bushveld. Then we gather for a safari briefing about the Kalahari safari adventure ahead.

On day two, we get up at sunrise and venture into the pristine wilderness of the rugged Kalahari Desert. We spend the first two days of our Kalahari Safari in the private game reserve, bordering the Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

Your guide takes you on 4x4 game drives in the Kalahari Desert to discover the marvels of this unique semi-desert ecosystem. You will also get to experience the desert on foot with a local tracker. A guided nature walk with Kalahari Bushmen (San) is a rare treat. On the guided nature walk you will get a closer look at the African bush and gain insight into the remarkable culture of the Kalahari Bushmen. As you walk the trackers share their detailed, indigenous knowledge about this harsh natural area and its unusual inhabitants. Our cultural encounter with the original inhabitants of this arid region enables you to experience the ancient ways of these traditional semi-nomadic people.

On your game drives and guided walk, you may come across some of the desert-adapted creatures living in the Kalahari Desert. These include the distinctive oryx (gemsbok), cheetah, hyena, eland, and even lion. At night we camp wild under the stars in the private game reserve.

  • Meals included: Lunch & Dinner (Day 1) / Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner (Day 2)
  • Travel: Maun to Kalahari Desert Game Reserve - 120km (4 hours)

Days 3 to 5: Private Kalahari Desert Game Reserve, Botswana - camping

On day three of our Kalahari Desert Botswana Safari, we are up at sunrise to head back out into the desert. This time we cross into the massive Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

We spend the next three days wild camping and exploring the vast unspoiled wilderness of the northern Kalahari Desert in Botswana. This undeveloped area is the perfect place to escape the crowds and soak up the peacefulness of nature.

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is the largest game reserve in Botswana. Here you can feel the incredible vastness of Africa's open spaces, as we drive through uninterrupted semi-desert landscapes and camp under wide star-studded skies. Our visit to the Kalahari reveals truly wild Africa. We experience pure adventure camping with limited water supplies and communication with the outside world. We travel from isolated camp to camp as a self-sufficient group staying in designated private campsites with fixed/bush ablutions.

  • Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Travel on Day 3: Private Kalahari Desert Game Reserve to Central Kalahari Game Reserve - 80km (3 to 4 hours, including game drive)
  • Activities included: Game drives and wild camping in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve

Day 6: Kalahari Desert to Makgadikgadi Pans, Botswana - safari lodge

Wake up in the calm Kalahari Desert surroundings one more time. Take in the desert scenes and pack up camp after breakfast. Then we take a slow drive out of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, looking out for signs of wildlife along the way.

Leaving the expansive Kalahari Desert behind we drive north to the Makgadikgadi Pans of Botswana. Tonight we stay at a comfortable lodge in Khumaga village on the fringes of the Makgadikgadi Pans. The oasis-like camp is located just outside of Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, overlooking the Boteti River.

This afternoon we take a game drive out onto the pans of Makgadikgadi National Park. Enjoy the open expanse of the arid salt pans stretching out into the distance and keep an eye out for roaming wildlife.

About the Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve protects a vast portion of the semi-arid to arid Kalahari Desert that forms the world's largest sand basin. This remote game park covers 52 800 km² area of central Botswana, making it one of the largest game reserves in Africa. The Kalahari Desert reserve is home to a variety of wildlife including giraffe, ostrich hyena, warthog, cheetah, wild dog, leopard, lion and jackal, as well as various antelope species such as wildebeest, eland, gemsbok, kudu and red hartebeest. The endless plains, dry riverbeds, flat slat pans and gentle hills of this harsh terrain support a wide variety of habitats ranging from acacia trees and woodlands to seemingly endless grasslands.

Botswana Safari Transport:

The vehicles used on this Botswana Safari are custom-built game-viewing vehicles, designed for safari trips in the African bush. Each safari vehicle carries up to 12 passengers, ensuring excellent visibility on game drives, as well as great movability in the wilderness. Throughout the Kalahari Safari we use a specially designed trailer unit containing a mobile kitchen and space for all of the camping equipment and luggage.

Botswana Safari Accommodation:

On this semi-participation Botswana Safari, we camp at remote bush sites in 2.1m x 2.1m x 1.75m bow tents that are easy to set up (clients help to put up the tents). All windows and doors of the tents are fitted with treated mosquito netting. Each person will get a 5cm high-density foam camping mattress to sleep on while camping. The bush ablutions consist of high-slung bucket showers and bush toilets with canvas screens for privacy. Round (200V/2pin) power units are available in the vehicles to recharge cameras.

Child Policy

This tour does take children.

While the minimum age for guests on this scheduled safari is 12 years old, occasionally we may make exceptions during low season (November to June), or perhaps for children who have already travelled on an adventure holiday etc.

The safari camps are wild camp sites, in remote areas of Botswana and these camp sites are not fenced.  Animals do come through the campsite at night and it is important that children are able to listen to and follow the guide safety instructions for the different areas on safari.

The guides are highly professional and very experienced, so guests will be safe in their care as long as they abide by the safety rules.
