This 5-day adventure into the heart of Botswana’s Jewel, the mysterious Okavango Delta, explores the crystal clear waterways by traditional dugout canoes camping in this pristine wilderness area.
The Okavango Delta Safari takes you into the bush, cooking and camping in the open with local people, to truly experience this remarkable water system and the diverse wildlife inhabiting it. The budget Okavango package also includes guided bush walks for close encounters with the rich flora and fauna.
This Okavango Delta Camping Safari is an active participation tour, which means that you get to set up camp and cook your pre-made meals over an open fire in the bush under starry skies. The Okavango Delta Safari includes pre and post delta cabin accommodation in Maun and a scenic flight over the delta can be added at extra cost.
On day one you will be collected from Maun Airport and transferred to the overnight campsite in Maun (if required). You will be given a tour briefing upon arrival at the camp, welcoming you and outlining the delta tour activities. You then have the option of taking a crocodile tour at an extra cost.
The first night’s accommodation is in rustic cabins with shared shower and toilet facilities. Dinner will be served in the campsite bar.
After breakfast at the campsite we take a leisurely drive into the watery wildlife haven of the Okavango Delta.
The safari guides and Mokoro polers will meet you at the river’s edge in this labyrinth of waterways, making up the world’s largest inland delta. We will help get you and your camping equipment into the dugout canoes, called Mokoros. Once you’re set to go, the journey continues by traditional wooden Mokoro. Travelling by canoe provides excellent game viewing and photographic opportunities as you glide between small islands on the winding channels of this pristine wilderness area.
Your Mokoro Guide will assist you in setting up camp in a shady spot overlooking the waters of the Okavango Delta. After preparing lunch for yourself and settling in at camp, you venture out on an afternoon game walk lead by your guide. You return from the bush walk in the early evening and then its time to cook dinner over an open fire in one of the wildest places in Africa.
An early start, rising before sunrise, on day three sees you heading into the unspoiled delta on foot or by Mokoro in search of the diverse wildlife species inhabiting the area. Qualified guides who are part of a community-based programme that we work with lead the Okavango Delta bush walks.
Exploring the delta you are almost guaranteed to see zebra, giraffe, elephant, jackals, antelope and an abundance of bird species. Lion, leopard, buffalo, wild dog, bat-eared fox, hyena and other wildlife species can also be spotted in the delta.
You can take a refreshing dip in the river during the hottest part of the day, or simply relax before the afternoon excursion. Returning to camp in the evening you can relax with your guides listening to stories around the fire and enjoying the sounds of the African bush. Be prepared…if your Botswana hosts sing a song for you they will be expect one from you in return!
If you choose to venture into the bush on a final walk its up early on day four. After your walk or some leisure time we cruise back down the channels of the Boro stream to our pick-up point for departure at around 10.00am. We arrive back at our Camp in Maun at about midday and spend the afternoon unwinding. You can relax by the pool, bar and restaurant at camp or take a scenic flight over the Okavango Delta to get a bird’s eye view of the crystal clear waterways snaking across the green landscape below. The scenic flight is not included in the tour price, but is well worth the extra cost as you get a great sense of the vastness of the unique wilderness area that you camped in on this safari.
On the last day you get to sleep in a bit and enjoy a late breakfast in the restaurant at camp. After breakfast you have the option of taking a guided tour of the commercial crocodile farm at camp, at an extra cost. You will then be transferred to the airport for your onward flights, bringing the unforgettable 5-day Okavango Delta Safari to a close.
