YOUNG AT HEART OVERLANDING (FOR OVER 50'S)

HOW OUR TRIPS WORK

CIRCULAR ROUTES
Apart from the Elephant Explorer (PE to Cape Town), the Big Five 10 day tours arrive and depart in the same city. The tour departure dates allow a few days between different tours enabling you to combine more than one. There is sufficient time to explore the host city itself and to fly to the next city before the next tour starts.

PRICE
Prices are all inclusive, including accommodation, transport, food, crew and entrance fees (to game parks and places of interest listed in the itinerary). There may be occasions when optional extra activities can be booked en route. These would be for your own account.

ACCOMMODATION
Accommodation is generally a combination of cabins, bungalows and pre-erected tented camps (on selected tours). They are clean and comfortable with a rustic charm, not the luxury found in some hotels. Wherever possible, facilities include en suite bathrooms. At some stops, a bathroom may be shared between four people on tour. In other places, eg. National Parks, there may be communal ablutions. Please note that the standard of facilities in National Parks can generally be regarded as high. The location of the stops often compensates for what the facilities may lack. Where possible, stopovers will be for two nights to minimise daily packing up.

A single supplement is only charged if you request a single room or if we are unable to accommodate you with another single tour member. This will be subject to group numbers and can only be confirmed close to the departure date.

TRANSPORT
Transport is provided in custom built safari vehicles with high viewing windows, coach seats, seat belts and air conditioning. Travelling distances is usually kept to a maximum 350 kilometers per day. Occasionally there will be a longer travelling day. Regular comfort stops will be made which also allow a cigarette break as our vehicles have a non-smoking policy. There is also a safe on board which you are welcome to use for storing your passport/ flight tickets etc.
African Routes operates a fleet of vehicles which have a unique design that is hard to miss. We have combined the rough and rugged durability of the overland truck with the comfort and speed of a coach. We have called this 14 seater – the “Minicoach”. It is well adapted for the varying road conditions it may encounter en route. From dirt tracks to tarred motorways, the high-powered turbo engine minimises time on the road and maximises time at the highlights. African Routes only purchases new vehicles to ensure performance reliability. The coach body is designed and custom built in our workshops. In addition to the quality of the vehicles, we have the back up of a permanent operations base where maintenance and regular servicing is carried out by our qualified mechanics. A walkway between cab and coach allows communication between passengers and crew. The ample legroom makes travelling long distances a pleasure. Fully equipped and self sufficient; the Minicoach's features include: large opening side lockers, which offer easy access to generous storage space for luggage, cooking equipment and food, etc. A dedicated catering locker makes lunch stops a breeze. These are located under the raised seating area which offers optimum height for game viewing. The unique front viewing window and wide-opening side windows increase photographic opportunities. Other features include: video battery recharger, internal lights and music speakers with individual on/off switches. All access and storage is fully lockable.
On certain tours we may schedule a 6 seater minibus. Quick and maneuverable, these vehicles are ideal for smaller groups. Group size will generally influence the size of vehicle used.

MEALS
Three meals per day are included. Breakfast is either provided by your accommodation host or by the crew, with a picnic meal at lunchtime. The evening meal will either be provided by your accommodation host or the crew. There will also be an occasional restaurant meal. Fresh produce is purchased as we travel, to supplement our pre-packed food supplies. If a special vegetarian meal has to be made in addition to the group meal, your assistance will be required.
Drinks: Tea, coffee and juice are offered. Other beverages/ alcoholic drinks are not included.

FELLOW PASSENGERS
Mixed nationality groups (max size 14) travel together, enjoying the safety and security of a group tour. These tours are designed for the active over 50’s. African Routes tours attract individuals with a sense of adventure who are young at heart, enthusiastic and enjoy travelling with flexible, like-minded people. The majority of our passengers are from the UK, Europe, Australasia and South America.
