Angola the last true frontier! This spectacularly beautiful country has recently begun to open up to tourism as a result of the end of a long and bloody civil war. The country is characterised by its abundance of fauna and flora and some of the most spectacular beaches in Africa.
Angola is a former Portuguese colony and Portuguese is still widely spoken. Most of the population are Roman Catholic.
Angola is roughly 5 times the size of Great Britain and has a coastline of 1650km's. An upside of the civil war is that the countries wildlife and natural surroundings have been preserved from exploitation, and as a result Angola offers a bountiful offering to te adventurous traveller.
The infrastructure of Angola is almost nonexistent as a result of the civil war and travelling in Angola is best done with careful preparation or with a tour company. There are a few lodges and hotels that have recently been built along the coastline that cater for this burgeoning market. The interior of Angola is still mostly unexplored from a tourism perspective.
The climate of Angola is affected the Benguela current running along the southern part of the coast and the Namibian Dessert to the South. As a result Angola has its own specific climate, with two distinct seasons, the rains, from October to April and the mist or from May to September which is the dry season charactarised with lower temperatures.
