Itinerary for this Camping Overland Tour

Tanzanian Budget Camping Safari Highlights

  • Game Drive in Ngorongoro Conservation Area
  • Serengeti National Park Game Drives
  • Scenic Great Rift Valley in Tanzania
  • Camping in Karatu near Lake Manyara

DAY 1: Nairobi to Arusha - Tanzania (L / D)

The Tanzanian Budget Camping Safari departs from Kenya's capital, Nairobi, in the morning. We travel south, crossing the border into Tanzania at Namanga.

On our first night we stay in a lovely campsite in Meserani, just outisde of Arusha. Tomorrow we will embark on our exhilarating Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater Trip.

DAY 2: Arusha to Karatu - Tanzania (B / L / D)

This morning on our Tanzanian Budget Camping Safari we explore Arusha town or visit the Meserani Reptile Park and Masai Cultural Museum.

A stone's throw away from our campsite is a craft gallery with the brightly coloured and iconic Tinga Tinga paintings.

We have lunch at our safari camp, with Mount Meru in the distance, before meeting our Tanzanian guides and transferring into locally operated 4WD safari vehicles. These adapted safari vehicles are ideal for game viewing and allow for excellent photographic opportunities through the open roof hatches.

Setting off from the safari camp our journey takes us through the Masai town of Mtu Wa Mbu (Mosquito River), lying beside the Lake Manyara National Park. We continue up the Great Rift Valley Escarpment making our way to the village of Karatu, set higher in the hills. From Karatu we enjoy panoramic vistas over the surrounding landscape of bush and wheat farms.

Tonight we stay at a lovely campsite in Karatu village.

DAY 3: Karatu to Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park - Tanzania (B / L / D)

Today we get up early in the morning and drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and explore the Ngorongoro Crater, teeming with wildlife.

The Ngorongoro Crater is the largest unbroken, unflooded caldera in the world, encompassing open savannah grasslands, acacia forests and both soda and fresh water lakes.

We take an exciting game drive in the Ngorongoro Crater, truly a miniature ‘Garden of Eden’. This crater is a World Heritage Site, boasting some of the best game viewing in Africa. Ngorongoro Crater game viewing opportunities include seeing the elusive Black Rhino.

After our game drive we travel down the Crater rim and pass the ‘Cradle of Mankind’ en route to the famous Serengeti National Park. We cross the open African plains on our game drive through the southern and central areas of the Serengeti Park.

Then we camp wild in the heart of the untamed bushveld, falling asleep to the sounds of the African wilderness at night. We are truly immersed in nature at this unfenced safari camp!

DAY 4: Serengeti National Park to Arusha - Tanzania (B / L / D)

In the morning we take a thrilling game drive in Serengeti Park, admiring the surrounding landscape as we search for game in the area. With some luck we get to sight the famous 'Big Five' of Africa (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion & leopard) on our Serengeti game drive.

After the morning game drive, we retrace our steps crossing the vast plains and lush Ngorongoro Crater rim.

Back in Tanzania's Arusha we spend the evening recounting our thrilling tales of the wildlife encounters on the plains of Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater.

In the morning, we head off for another exhilarating game drive in the Serengeti, exploring the landscape in search of the array of resident game. With some luck, we may see some of Africa’s ‘Big 5’!

Following our morning drive, we retrace our journey back across the open plains and along the lush Crater rim to our truck at Arusha, where we spend the evening musing over our thrilling wildlife experience in Tanzania.

DAY 5: Arusha to Nairobi - Kenya (B)

On the last morning of this Tanzanian Budget Safari we spend some time in Arusha, before joining our shuttle bus for the drive back into Kenya. Arriving in Nairobi our budget African camping trip comes to an end.

The Shuttle driver will assist you with the border crossing and drop you at a hotel in Nairobi. We usually arrive in Nairobi in the afternoon, but may be delayed by traffic or the border crossing. We therefore recommend booking any onward travel from Nairobi for the following day.

Please Note:

This Tanzania Camping Safari begins in Nairobi, Kenya and travels to the Serengeti National Park & Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania before ending back in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Budget Tanzania Trip departs from Nairobi in Kenya, early in the morning. Should you wish to explore Nairobi, an earlier arrival is recommended. We offer a free night of pre-tour accommodation in shared dorms or you can upgrade your accommodation through African Budget Safaris.
