Information:
A very beautiful and friendly country existing along one
side of the enormous Lake Malawi (formerly Lake Nyasa).
Having gained its independence from Britain in 1964, Malawi
under the President for life Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda, alienated
its neighbours for many years by maintaining friendly relations
with South Africa at a time when the 'Frontline States' (Zambia,
Zimbabwe, Mozambique) sought to isolate that country by trade
and political boycott.
Lake Malawi, takes up almost 20% of the country's area and
along with the high country gameparks (up to 3,000m in altitude)
- is the country's main attraction. Watersports, fishing and
the world's first underwater gamepark all add to the extreme
friendliness of the Malawian people making it many people's
favourite destination on an overland safari.
