DESCRIPTION OF THE AREA:
The Port Elizabeth to Durban self drive takes
you through two Provinces and several unique areas within
each of these provinces. This self drive option is a beach
lovers delight, as it takes in some of the best beaches available
within the borders of South Africa. It’s the perfect
family holiday option.
Your first port of call is the coastal town of Port Alfred,
which is the “capital” of the Sunshine Coast.
From there you head towards the Wild Coast experiencing a
change of climate to that of semi tropical. You take in the
small seaside hamlets of Cintsa and Port St. Johns with its
unspoilt beauty and rich cultural history. The Wild Coast
is the traditional home of the Xhosa tribe who make up the
majority of South Africa’s population. From the Wild
Coast you head further up the coast towards the South Coast
of Natal with its warm waters and modern first world facilities.
You will end your holiday in the vibrant city of Durban with
its rich Indian and Zulu fusion.

DETAILED ITINERARY
Day 1 - Port Elizabeth to Port Alfred
Leaving Port Elizabeth you head up the coast
towards the Port Alfred. Port Alfred is located along the
banks of the tidal Kowie River; this picturesque seaside holiday
resort has more sunshine days than any other town along the
coast and is the perfect way to start you holiday.
Port Alfred or the Kowie as it is known by the locals has
magnificent stretches of unspoilt beach, you can walk in solitude
collecting shells, or swim sociably with other bathers, while
surfers enjoy the famous beach breaks at East Beach and various
other well-known sites, and scuba divers explore the colourful
reef.

Day 2 - Port Alfred to Cintsa
Heading from Port Alfred you continue your journey
up to Cintsa. Cintsa has been described as a little piece
of unspoilt paradise. Cintsa has a subtropical climate.
And is one of the jewels of the Eastern Cape coast. Cintsa
area offers a variety of recreational activities. An abundance
of bird life including sea, estuary and river birds as well
as inland species may be seen. Within a ten minute drive the
rolling savannah of Inkwenkwezi Private Game Reserve offers
sights of rhino, giraffe, zebra and a variety of buck on guided
tours in an open vehicle.
When sun tanning, bathing, body surfing and beach games have
been exhausted a canoe ride up river at high tide provides
a pleasant alternative. Walkers can reach Cefani Mouth or
Cintsa West with ease. Fishing off the rocks is also popular.

Day 3 & 4 - Cintsa to Port St. Johns
Leaving Cintsa you head towards Port St. Johns
the heart of the Wild Coast.
The lack of coastal development and the sheer rugged beauty
earned this 300-mile stretch of the Africa coast its name
``The Wild Coast". The Wild Coast is home to South Africa's
second largest ethnic clan, the Xhosa, with the Pondo tribe
in the north-eastern section
The Wild Cost is characterised by great abundance of estuaries,
rarely more than five or six miles apart with green rolling
hills that slope steeply from 300-400 feet down to the sea,
interspersed with short stretches of sheer cliffs and sandy
beaches, a true visual delight.

Day 5 - Port St. Johns to Margate / Ramsgate
Heading out of the solitude of the Wild Coast
you continue your travels out of the Eastern Cape into the
South Coast of Kwazulu Natal. Your first port of call is the
coastal towns of Margate and Ramsgate. (Your accommodation
falls in the between the two towns.) Margate is the heart
of the Hibiscus Coast and the region's beauty is obvious,
Margate is a sub-tropical paradise with its golden beaches,
coastal forests and endless sunny days.
Margate and Ramsgate are well established holiday towns with
all the modern amenities on offer from great restaurants to
art galleries. Its time to re-enter civilization.

Day 6 - Margate to Scottburgh
Heading out of Margate / Ramsgate you head further
up the Kwazulu Natal South Coast to Scottburgh. The quaint
village of Scottburgh is nestled alongside kilometres of shoreline
washed by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Scottburgh
is sited on a prominent headland overlooking the ocean and
is characterised by its golden beaches, indigenous forests
and rolling hills.

Day 7 - Scottburgh to Durban
Leaving Scottburgh you head for the final destination
of your holiday the thriving city of Durban.
Today Durban is South Africa's busiest port and beach resort.
The Zulu people populate most of the province of Natal and
Durban has a strong infusion of tribal citizens.
Durban has the largest Indian population descendants of indentured
labourers who came in the 1860's to work on the sugar cane
fields. It is also the city where Mahatma Gandhi started a
political career that eventually led him to great prominence
in the struggle for independence in India.
The wealth of influences will entertain and enthral you with
traditional warrior dancers, mystic fire-walkers and colonial
heritage. Durban offers you the unique vibrancy of township
life, the finest curries outside India and a calendar filled
with thrilling, spectacular events.
Durban is a holiday destination quite unlike any other. Sophisticated
and cosmopolitan, Durban after dark is abuzz with elegant
lounges, funky taverns, local theatre and live music, trendy
clubs, pubs and discos.
Durban is world-renowned for its "Golden Mile"
- the Durban beach front. Merely a few paces from an enticing
selection of international-class tourist accommodation, clean
golden sands and warm Indian Ocean beckon with irresistible
allure. Protected year round by shark nets and expert lifeguards
where designated areas keep bathers and surfboard riders a
safe distance apart.
Although Durban is viewed by most as a resort city, it offers
a rich cultural heritage and history with numerous and a variety
of museums, parks and gardens.
