The Masai Mara reserve covers 1510 sq km of wide-open savannahs and fertile riverine woodlands in south-western Kenya and forms a continuation of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. One of Africa's premier national parks, the Masai Mara is famous for its Large Cat population and the massive annual Wildebeest Migration. The reserve is shared with the semi nomadic Masai people, whose culture and way of life has remained relatively intact for hundreds of years. Visiting the Masai Mara reserve is more than a wildlife experience as it offers insight into the culture of the native Masai communities of Kenya. The reserve also presents superb opportunities for wildlife photography with its stunning open landscapes and unforgettable sunsets.
The Masai Mara is teeming with wildlife such as wildebeest, giraffe, baboons, warthogs, bat eared foxes, grey jackals, spotted hyena, topis, impala and hartebeest. The game reserve is also home to numerous elephants, buffaloes, zebras and hippos.
The park is home to thousands of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle, which make the phenomenal annual migration, known as the Great Migration. These herbivores migrate north from the Serengeti in about July and return south crossing the Mara River in about November in search of water and fresh grazing. This dramatic spectacle is one of the most impressive natural phenomena on earth, especially watching the herbivores plunge into the Mara River where crocodiles and hippos lie in waiting. The high concentration of grazers in turn attracts impressive numbers of predators. Lions are commonly sighted in Masai Mara with cheetahs and leopards being harder to spot but still reasonably common. The Masai Mara Park is also renowned for superb sightings of Africa’s Big Five - lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo. The Masai Mara reserve is also rich in birdlife, including migrants, with over 450 species recorded, of which 57 species are birds of prey.
Masai Mara Safaris with African Budget Safaris range from a 3-day Budget Camping Safari to this spectacular game park to an epic 56-day Camping Overland Safari through east and southern Africa. Tour types that visit Masai Mara include Camping Overland Safaris, Accommodated Overland Safaris, Exclusive Overland Safaris, Budget Camping Safaris and Exclusive Budget Safaris. Comfortable 4x4 vehicles are used on game drives in the Masai Mara and accommodation is selected for its remoteness and quality for money.
Hot air balloon trips can be arranged on most of the Masai Mara safaris and are an excellent way of seeing the grassland plains and abundant wildlife. The balloon rides over the vast Masai Mara are followed by a champagne breakfast in a beautiful setting, completing this once in a lifetime experience.
