This accommodated budget Addo, Lesotho & Drakensberg Safari starts in the Eastern Cape, departing from Port Elizabeth, and ends in KwaZulu-Natal, finishing in Durban.
A fantastic and affordable getaway to the scenic Lesotho and Drakensberg Mountains, the stark Karoo and game-rich Addo Park!
This accommodated Addo, Lesotho & Drakensberg Safari begins in Port Elizabeth where you meet your guides and fellow travellers.
From Port Elizabeth, we travel to Addo Elephant National Park, home to one of the densest populations of African elephants in the world. This afternoon we embark on a game drive in Addo Park in our safari truck. This massive game park also boasts the ‘Big Seven’ (elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo, leopard, southern right whale and great white shark) as the game park includes both land and marine habitats.
We stay in permanent tents at a lodge with a bar, laundry services, hot showers and internet.
On day two we travel to Graaff Reinet in the semi-arid Karoo region of South Africa. The Karoo is known for its expansive, flat landscapes with dry sheep farms and a scattering of remote towns.
This afternoon you can take a walk around Graaff-Reinet or, if time allows, join a guided historical tour of the town (optional extra). Graaff-Reinet is the fourth oldest town in South Africa, hosting one of the highest concentrations of monuments in the country.
In the early evening, we drive to the nearby Valley of Desolation, 14km's from Graaff-Reinet. We end the day off with sundowners at a viewpoint, watching the sunset over the Camdeboo plains and the distant town.
On day three our Budget Addo, Lesotho & Drakensberg Safari leaves South Africa behind, journeying into Lesotho, the 'Kingdom in the Sky'. Lesotho is one of the highest countries in the world, with the entire country lying over 1000m above sea level.
The next day begins with a hike in the mountains of Lesotho, soaking up the beautiful scenery and fresh mountain air. We hike to a village where we get to meet the local Basotho people and find out more about their way of life. The Basotho are known for their traditional straw hats, colourful textiles and hardy ponies. You have the chance to go pony trekking in the hills (optional) this afternoon. On the pony trek, Lesotho villagers will guide you along secluded mountain trails with breathtaking views.
We stay in en-suite rooms at a lodge with a bar on day three and four.
We return to South Africa where we drive to the mountainous uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, formerly called Royal Natal National Park. Along the way, we pause at a vulture centre and drive through the impressive landscapes of the Golden Gate National Park.
Day six is set aside for exploring mountain paths and enjoying the beauty of the towering Drakensberg Mountains. The Drakensberg Mountains are South Africa’s highest peaks, also widely considered the most beautiful.
On the morning of day six, we set off on a hike in the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg National Park, where we have the chance to meet with local guides and see San (Bushman) rock paintings. Alternatively, you can enjoy optional outdoor activities or simply unwind in the scenic Drakensberg Mountains.
Our accommodation is in en-suites rooms at a resort with a pool, bar, internet and laundry services.
Our Addo, Lesotho & Drakensberg Safari takes us through some amazing scenery on our way down to the KwaZulu-Natal Coast.
Along the way, we stop to view the monument that marks the place where Nelson Mandela was arrested in 1962. After visiting the site where this famous Nobel Peace Prize laureate and political icon was taken as a political prisoner, we stop to admire Howick Falls and enjoy the views.
In the late afternoon, we enter the bustling city of Durban, South Africa’s largest port and well know surfing destination. This Accommodated Budget Safari ends on arrival in Durban, but most safari groups choose to go out for an optional meal at one of the excellent Indian restaurants in Durban on the last night.
The northbound Addo, Lesotho & Drakensberg Safari is also available in the reverse order, starting in Durban and ending in Port Elizabeth as the southbound budget Lesotho, Addo & Drakensberg Safari.
We recommend arriving the day before your safari and only booking flights for the day after the safari ends. We can help arrange accommodation for before and after the safari on request.
