Leaving Johannesburg this Budget Kruger Camping Tour travels to the world-renowned Kruger National Park and Pretoriuskop Rest Camp. Arriving in time to take a sunset game drive, we search out Africa’s Big Five and the array of other animals and birds found here.
Day two starts with an early morning game drive, heading out into the vast park in search of the diverse animal and bird life. Back at Pretoriuskop Camp, we relax for a few hours, before embarking on an afternoon game drive. Alternatively, on Day 2 you can enjoy an optional (at additional cost) day tour of the scenic Panorama Route, which includes the spectacular Blyde River Canyon and God’s Window. On our final morning we take another game drive in Kruger Park, where the abundance of animals, birds, other creatures and plant life ensures that there is always something interesting to see.
This 3 Day Budget Kruger Camping Tour is an ideal introduction to the world of safaris and will no doubt wet your appetite for more.
Early this morning we set off on our 3-Day Kruger Park Camping Safari, departing from Johannesburg, South Africa. Guests are collected from OR Tambo airport at around 8h00, or at 8h30 from two departure points near OR Tambo airport, where we can arrange pre-tour accommodation for you at an additional cost. Here you will meet up with other guests and continue to Nelspruit Airport (KMIA) in a larger bus. Arriving at KMIA between 12h00 and 13h00 you switch to an air-conditioned minibus for the remainder of your transfer to Kruger National Park, South Africa’s premier game reserve.
The game viewing begins immediately as there is the possibility of spotting wildlife en route to Pretoriuskop Rest Camp, where your safari guide is waiting to show you to your pre-erected tent. We arrive between 15h00 and 16h00, in time to join the sunset game drive in Kruger.
Our driver and guide is a SANParks game ranger, driving an official Kruger Park safari vehicle and there is the possibility of other guests joining our excursion as this isn't a private game drive. This is our opportunity to search for nocturnal animals in the park and, although the park gates close at a specific time, being on a SANParks game drive means our rangers are allowed entry to the park after normal gate closing time.
Please Note: Children under the age of six are not permitted on the SANParks game drive.
Back at camp, there is some free time to freshen up before dinner, which is served in a private dining area in Pretoriuskop. Our host will prepare a traditional South African meal to give you a real taste of South African cuisine. You are welcome to buy your own drinks (wine, beer or other drinks) at the park’s shop.
After dinner, you can relax around the campfire looking back on your first exciting day in the African bush or head off to bed for a well-deserved rest. (Dinner included)
Traditionally a day of game viewing starts early with coffee or tea and rusks (dry biscuits for dunking) available in the camp dining facility. The start of our game drive is dependent on the gate opening times, but your tour guide will wake you in good time.
Mornings are an excellent time for game viewing as this is one of the most active times of the day for many animals. The guides in the park communicate with each other advising of the location of any exciting encounters, which means these professionals offer you the best game viewing and photographic opportunities. After 3 or 4 hours of searching for game, it's back to the camp for a very welcome, hearty brunch, served in the dining facility at Pretoriuskop Rest Camp. Brunch is followed by free time at the large and peaceful camp. Take a nap, shop for souvenirs, swim in the pool or stock up on snacks and drinks.
Then we embark on an afternoon game drive (times depend on the season and gate closing times). Setting off in our safari vehicle, designed for game viewing and photo opportunities, we search out the abundant wildlife and birds of Kruger Park. Later, we return to Pretoriuskop Rest Camp in time to freshen up before our evening meal, to be served at the private dining area.
Alternatively, you have the option of doing a Panorama Route day tour at an additional cost, instead of game viewing today.
You have the option of exploring South Africa’s renowned Panorama Route from Kruger, instead of game viewing on day two.
One of the most scenic parts of South Africa, the Panorama Route highlights include the Blyde River Canyon, Three Rondavels, God’s Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes and Graskop Gorge, where you can take the lift down into the gorge and vivid, green forest below: have a look at the experience. The Panorama Route Excursion departs between 08h00 and 08h30, stopping in one of the quaint towns along the way for lunch (excluded). After visiting the scenic attractions on the Panorama Route we return to Kruger, arriving back at Pretoriuskop Rest Camp between 17h00 and 18h00.
Please Note: The optional Panorama Route excursion is not available on the first and last day of the safari, due to the long travelling distances and time constraints. If you wish to book this tour for day 2 of your safari, please let your consultant know and they can arrange on your behalf and advise on the tour cost.
We are up early again today so as not to miss the best time of the day in the bush. After breakfast we depart from Pretoriuskop, in our air-conditioned minibus, watching for wildlife as we leave the park.
We drive back to Nelspruit Airport arriving between 12h30 and 13h30 and board a larger bus set for the lodge at OR Tambo. From here you can transfer to alternative post-tour accommodation in Johannesburg, arriving between 17h00 and 18h30. Alternatively, you can transfer to the airport by arrangement or spend an extra night at our selected post-tour lodge.
Please Note: The Panorama Route trip is not available on the first and last day of the safari, due to the long travelling distances and time constraints.
Pretoriuskop is the oldest camp in Kruger National Park, located in the southwestern section of the park near Numbi Gate.
This classical Kruger camp features rambling lawns and an inviting swimming pool, with a shaded camping area set along the fence, from where wildlife can be spotted in the surrounding game park. Pretoriuskop is a peaceful camp, ideal for relaxing in nature, bird watching and resting between game drives, as well as visiting historical sights nearby.
Keep an eye out for kudu, waterbuck, sable and Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, as well as wild dogs, rhinos and elephants. Despite the tall grasses, woodlands and rocky hills around camp, leopards and buffalos are often seen in the area, which is also one of the few places in Kruger where red duiker and oribi are found.
Please note that we offer convenient pre and post tour lodge accommodation for before and after the Kruger Camping Safari, which can be added to your tour booking upon request. The 4-star lodge accommodation is located 10-15 minutes from the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. For pricing information please follow the link.
On this safari, we use camping facilities and accommodation located inside the Kruger National Park. We do not stay outside Kruger Park unless forced to do so because of availability.
This is not a private safari, which means that there will most likely be other guests joining you on the game drive vehicles, air-conditioned minibus transfer vehicles and in the dining facility. All times given in the itinerary serve as a guideline only and are subject to change.
Guests flying out of OR Tambo Airport on the last day of the safari are requested to book any flights after 19h30 so that we have enough time to get you to the airport. We recommend an extra night in Johannesburg after the safari if possible.
Stay in spacious tents equipped with beds, mattresses, duvets and pillows. Kitchen and ablution facilities are shared and frequently serviced, and towels and soap are included. The camp has a cafeteria, shop, restaurant and laundry facilities.
This three day Kruger National Park Safari package is also available as four day, five day and six-day safari options. For more information please contact African Budget Safaris.
There is also an upgraded tour option where guests stay in huts fitted with beds. The ablutions and kitchen facilities are shared and serviced frequently. The basic huts have ceiling fans and the standard huts feature a small fridge and air-conditioning. For details about the upgraded tour please contact us.
