Itinerary for this Tour

Day 1: Johannesburg to Klaserie Reserve, Greater Kruger

Leave the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg behind this morning and head for Greater Kruger. This Budget Kruger Safari to Klaserie Reserve Game Lodge begins with a transfer to the gates of our 4-star game lodge. There we are met by a friendly game ranger and transferred to the game lodge in an open safari vehicle, spotting wildlife as we drive.

Arriving at the welcoming game lodge you have time to settle in and freshen up before enjoying afternoon tea. Tea is served in the indoor or outdoor dining areas overlooking the waterhole. Then you are free to rest or explore the authentic lodge and enjoy the unspoiled setting. Take a siesta in your private cottage or take a dip in the pool and watch for wildlife at the waterhole.

Later in the afternoon, we head out on our first sunset game drive in Greater Kruger. The unfenced boundaries between Klaserie, Kruger National Park, and Timbavati allow the wildlife to migrate through this vast wilderness area in search of the best grazing, hunting opportunities, and water sources. Off-road driving is permitted in the exclusive Klaserie Reserve, so no opportunity for up-close contact with wildlife is missed. While in the bush, we stop to watch a dramatic African sunset and enjoy sundowner drinks. Then we make our way back to the lodge under darkness, using a powerful spotlight to spot nocturnal creatures.

Back at the game lodge, head to the open-air boma for pre-dinner drinks and relive the exciting wildlife sightings of the day. Then tuck into a hearty three-course dinner around the campfire (weather permitting) before retiring to your comfortable cottage.

  • Safari Activities included: Sunset Game Drive with sundowners
  • Meals included: Afternoon Tea & Dinner

Day 2-4: Klaserie Game Reserve, Greater Kruger

We follow a similar routine over the next 3 days of our Kruger Safari to Klaserie Reserve Game Lodge. Yet, each day brings very different wildlife adventures.

The day starts with a fresh cup of coffee or tea and a light snack. Then you head out into the African bush on an early morning game drive or bush walk. We get an early start to ensure you catch the resident wildlife and birds at their most active. Sunrise is an ideal time to witness the wildlife and birds stirring in the bush and gathering at the watering holes, before the heat of the day.

The game drives and guided bush walks are conducted by the professional game rangers of the safari lodge. All of whom are passionate and knowledgeable about the African wilderness and its inhabitants. The game lodge uses open safari vehicles that provide optimal visibility for watching and photographing wildlife and birds.

The game lodge has the privilege of 6000 hectares of traversing rights which makes for a genuine African safari experience. One of the main perks of going on safari in the Klaserie Private Reserve is the absence of crowds, due to restricted access. Sightings of the Big 5 are virtually guaranteed, as the reserve teems with these powerful creatures and many more, as well as prolific birdlife. Wildlife commonly sighted in Klaserie Reserve includes giraffe, wildebeest, hyena, zebra, hippo, warthog, mongoose, vervet monkey, and various antelope species, such as waterbuck, steenbok, impala, and kudu.

On the guided bush walks you are escorted by an armed game ranger that is trained to deal with wild animal encounters. The bush walks are thrilling experiences as you may encounter large wildlife species on foot at any time. There is no better way to get close to nature, hearing the calls of the animals in the stillness and smelling the aromas of the bushveld. The experienced ranger shares his wealth of knowledge about the wild environment - how to track animals, the meaning behind fresh dung, the complexities of termite mounds, and the intricacies of the flora. He will point out the smaller creatures that may be missed but are important to this pristine ecosystem.

After about three hours of exploring, we make our way back to the game lodge for brunch. After a tasty brunch, you are free to unwind and enjoy the luxuries of the charming safari lodge. Soak up the wild environment, keeping an eye out for wildlife and birds visiting the waterhole and surrounding bush. Recline on a comfy lounger beside the pool or on the upper deck, looking out over the active waterhole. Retreat to the privacy and comfort of your cottage for a siesta or curl up with a book from the library in an inviting lounge chair.

Enjoy an afternoon tea before setting off on a late afternoon game drive that lasts into the night. Along the way, stop for sundowners and snacks in the middle of the bush to watch a spectacular African sunset. After dark, a powerful spotlight will be used to help locate shy nocturnal wildlife on your game drive.

Once again we gather in the outdoor boma to enjoy drinks and a hearty dinner while recounting the thrilling experiences of the day. Sit back and relax under the starry African skies, listening to the sounds of untamed nature.

  • Safari Activities included: Sunrise game drives or bush walks & sunset game drives
  • Meals included: Brunch, Afternoon Tea & Dinner

Day 5: Klaserie Reserve, Greater Kruger to Johannesburg

On our last day in the pristine African wilderness, we rise early and have a fresh coffee or tea before heading out on our final game drive. The last opportunity to add to our wildlife sightings and find out more about the African bush. Your professional guide takes you in search of the Big 5 and other wildlife in the open safari vehicle once more.

After about three hours of game viewing, we return to the comfort of the game lodge for a tasty brunch. Then it is time to prepare for our departure and enjoy your remaining time at the elegant game lodge. The transfer vehicle will collect you and shuttle you back to the vibrant city of Johannesburg. This memorable, budget-friendly, family safari will be an experience never to be forgotten.

Expect to arrive back in Johannesburg between 17h00 and 18h00, bringing this 5 Day Kruger Safari to Klaserie Reserve Game Lodge to a close.

About Klaserie Game Reserve in Greater Kruger Park

The idea of Klaserie Private Nature Reserve was born in 1969 when three farmers discussed combining their privately owned farmland along the Klaseries River to create a nature reserve to protect the natural landscape. The idea bore fruit in 1972 when a group of farmers had committed, a board had been elected, a game warden employed and Klaserie Private Nature Reserve was officially proclaimed. From the outset, the board was passionate about conservation, and today, the reserve is involved in a number of wildlife projects including the Ground Hornbill Project, Rhino Protection, the "Tembo" project currently studying buffalo, and The Elephant Project.

With no fences between Klaserie, Kruger National Park and Timbavati Reserve wildlife roam freely between these Big 5 game parks. Spanning 60 000 hectares on either side of the Klaserie River, Klaserie Reserve is home to an abundance of wildlife. Inhabitants include the Big 5 - lion, rhino, elephant, buffalo, and leopard, whilst other regular sightings include giraffe, zebra, warthog, spotted hyaena, baboon, hippo, impala, and kudu.

The board's philosophy has always been to keep the reserve pristine by minimizing the human footprint, so the number of bush camps and game lodges in Klaserie is limited. This means fewer tourists at a time, so guests can enjoy an exclusive African safari experience away from the more crowded national parks. The Klaserie game lodge you stay at on this safari offers game drives and guided bush walks with an experienced game ranger. This includes night game drives and off-road driving at times.

Klaserie offers a unique African safari adventure, free from the stresses of modern living and far away from the crowds of tourists.
