Itinerary for this Tour

Day 1 to 3: Maun to Xaoo Safari Camp, Okavango Delta – Botswana

Our Botswana Safari adventure kicks off in Maun, where you are greeted at Maun International Airport before heading off on a 45-minute road transfer to our first destination: a tented camp nestled in a forested island overlooking the Okavango Delta flood plains.

Xaoo Safari Camp is located on a private concession that shares a border with the southern part of the famous Moremi Game Reserve. Covering just under 5,000 square kilometers (1,900 sq mi) of the eastern side of the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve is a study of contrasts, from permanent water lagoons to dry areas of mopane woodland and acacia forests, to seasonal floodplains which fill up after the rains each year. These diverse habitats are home to nearly 500 species of bird and an impressive array of other wildlife including lion, leopard, African bush elephant, African buffalo, black rhinoceros, hippopotamus, giraffe, plains zebra, blue wildebeest, cheetah, spotted hyena, black-backed jackal, common warthog, and impala. The area is considered a significant habitat for African wild dogs and is also a great place to spot a Red Lechwe antelope specially adapted to these marshy conditions. Additionally, Moremi Game Reserve is one of the few places in Botswana you might come across a rhino.

There is no better way to experience the Okavango Delta than by mokoro, a dug-out canoe traditionally hewn from either an ebony or sausage tree - though today most of the mekoro (plural) are made from fiberglass to preserve the magnificent old trees of the area. Your guide stands and poles silently through the narrow maze of waterways and estuaries of the delta while you relax and take in the sights and sounds of this magical place. Guides come from the local villages, so you benefit from their indigenous knowledge as you drift along. Pause at small islands along the way where you can alight and explore further on foot. This is an opportunity to get close to the wonders, big and small, of one of Africa's last truly wild places. Your knowledgeable guide points out fascinating insects, plants, tracks, or other signs of animal activity.

Each day you will explore more of this fascinating area, embarking on a morning and afternoon activity of your choosing - a mokoro ride, walking safari, 4x4 game drive, or a cultural village tour. Helicopter and fixed-wing scenic flights are alternative activities available (own expense). Overnight wilderness camping is also an option (own expense).

Return to camp in the heat of the day to relax by the pool or watch the comings and goings at the lagoon which lies alongside the camp. Meals are served out on the spacious deck area. Keep a lookout for visiting wildlife and birds. This is a great spot to put your feet up at the end of the day and admire a beautiful sunset over the Okavango Delta, listening to the sounds of nature as the stars come out.

  • Meals included: Dinner (Day 1); Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner (Days 2 & 3)
  • Activities included: mokoro trip, walking safari, game drive & cultural village tour
  • Optional activities (own expense): Scenic flights & Overnight wilderness camping

About Xaoo Safari Camp in the Okavango Delta

Xaoo Safari Camp is nestled on a forested island overlooking the flood plains in the southeast of the Okavango Delta. A lagoon alongside the property has an abundance of small marsh animals, attracting birds, foraging herbivores, and those animals who feed on them. Watch the scene unfold from the swimming pool and boma campfire of the main area.

Accommodation is in six spacious luxury tents with ceiling fans, an indoor bath, and an outside shower. The camp is family friendly and a sofa bed in the tent can be made up as an additional bed for up to 2 children under 12yrs or 1 additional adult. The camp is run on sustainable principles – it is fully solar-powered, and there is a strong focus on community involvement and support for the local guides and mokoro polers in the game drives and mokoro experiences.

Xaoo Safari Camp is located near the tiny village of Xoxao, on a private concession that shares a border with the Moremi Game Reserve, known for its striking number of thriving wildlife species, birdlife, and unique delta landscapes. It is a 45-minute road transfer from Maun (included in the tour rate).

Day 4 to 6: Xaoo to Mogogelo Camp, Okavango Delta – Botswana

After a final morning activity followed by a hearty breakfast, it is time to bid farewell to Xaoo Safari Camp. A helicopter will transfer you to the next tented camp on our Botswana Safari, Mogogelo Camp. This will offer you a fantastic aerial perspective on the layout of Moremi and the movement of wildlife through the Okavango Delta.

On arrival at Mogogelo, settle in and enjoy a delicious lunch/high tea at camp before heading out on an afternoon game drive. The camp is located on the delta’s seasonal floodplains, in a private concession on the eastern edge of the Okavango Delta. Discover the unique landscape on twice daily game drives, which depart at sunrise in the mornings and again in the late afternoon to overlap with sunset. Game drives are done under the expert lead of local Motswana guides. We travel by open 4x4 safari vehicle which offers fantastic views of the surrounding landscape and the animals you encounter. Get up close with elephants, buffaloes, lions, and a host of other creatures. Experience the tradition of having sundowners - at a scenic spot in the bush mid-game drive, an iconic part of any safari in southern Africa!

Afternoon game drives become night drives after the sun sets, bringing the nocturnal creatures to the spotlight. Leopards and lions are more active at night, while nocturnal creatures like civets, porcupines, honey badgers, and jackals are likely to be seen. During the dry season, walking safaris are a possibility for those who’d like to explore on foot. Between game drives, you are at leisure to relax at camp, take a dip in the swimming pool, have a drink at the bar, or simply enjoy the solitude of the bush from your private deck.

  • Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner x3
  • Activities included: 2 Game drives per day in the private concession
  • Optional activities (own expense): Night game drives & a Mokoro day trip

Day 7 to 9: Mogogelo to Camp Khwai, Khwai River Area - Botswana

Day 10 to 12: Khwai to Jackalberry Chobe, Chobe National Park - Botswana

After a final morning activity followed by a hearty breakfast, it is time to bid farewell to Camp Khwai. A light aircraft will transfer you northeast out of the Okavango Delta. Enjoy the sweeping views over the wild landscape during the flight to our next Botswana safari destination, Jackalberry Chobe Camp lying on the banks of the Chobe River.

The Chobe River drains from the Caprivi Swamp in the northern reaches of Botswana and eventually flows into the Zambezi River to tumble over Victoria Falls some 75 kilometers away. It forms the northern border of Chobe National Park, first protected as a game reserve in 1961 and proclaimed a national park in 1968. In the dry season, animals converge on this stretch of water from the whole of northern Botswana. Elephants and buffaloes, especially, form huge herds for which the park is famous. One of the main attractions of this Botswana park is the game viewing boat trips on the Chobe River, looking out for the famously large family groups of elephants that troop down to the river to drink and bathe

Chobe National Park has 4 distinct areas, each area known for concentrations of specific animals. Savuti is famous for lion and hyena, Linyati for hippo and crocodile, and Nogatsaa and Serondella for elephant. Many other types of animals may be sighted, including the rare puku and Chobe bushbuck, and some 460 bird species, including raptors, vultures, and inland waterbirds

The camp is situated on the banks of the Chobe River, its main area congregated under a majestic Jackalberry Tree. Each day, set out to explore the area on morning and afternoon game sighting activities - your choice of 4x4 safari game drives or game viewing river cruises. Return to camp for a hearty meal and escape the heat of the day by the pool or watching the life on the river pass you by as you relax under the Jackalberry tree or on your private deck.

  • Meals included: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner x3
  • Activities included: Game drives & Boat cruises
  • Optional activities (own expense): Victoria Falls day trip & Fishing
