Our adventure begins in the bustling town of Maun, located in northern Botswana. A Delta Air representative is there to meet you at the airport and assist you with boarding the light aircraft for the flight into the Central Kalahari Region.
We fly to the remote Grasslands Bushman Lodge, set on a private game reserve west of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Southern Africa's largest wildlife reserve. This secluded semi-desert region is a land of faded sandveld grasses dotted with acacias and shrubs stretching out endlessly under wide blue skies. The lodge is owned by the De Graaf family that has lived in the Central Kalahari for seven generations, and some of the lodge staff are from a local San Bushmen clan that has been working with the lodge for generations. The De Graaf's share their love of the Kalahari with guests offering warm hospitality and deep insight into this mysterious wilderness area of Botswana.
Grasslands Bushman Lodge is set on 15 000 hectares of wild land, with guest areas overlooking a floodlit watering hole visited by a variety of animals throughout the day and at night. The lodge accommodates up to 16 guests in comfortable en-suite chalets with thatched roofs, including two family chalets, and features a swimming pool.
The lodge specialises in four main activities - a San cultural experience, a predator program, horse riding and nature drives. The San Bushmen excursion is an authentic experience with the local clan. Walk with the clan, foraging in the bush and finding out how these remarkable nomadic people have survived in harsh conditions for thousands of years.
Embark on game drives in the Central Kalahari, home to a surprising diversity of animals and small creatures, plants and even birds. Visit the unique predator rehabilitation centre where local predators such as cheetahs and wild dogs are protected. Lastly, go horse riding out on the savannahs and gentle hills of the open Kalahari, surrounding yourself with raw nature. At night there are the countless bright stars of the Kalahari skies to keep you in awe.
On day four we have breakfast at Grassland Bushman Lodge, before flying to Oddballs’ Enclave in the heart of the Okavango Delta. Touching down at the airstrip in the small plane, you are welcomed by your private guide from Oddballs’ Enclave. The guide transfers you to the remote camp and takes care of you (two guests per guide) throughout your stay in the delta.
Oddballs’ Enclave is located on a little island to the south-west of Chief’s Island, and is only accessible by light aircraft. We spend the next few days exploring this wild area, bordering on the world-renowned Moremi Game Reserve. Your guide takes you on bush walks and mokoro trips in his own hand-carved wooden canoe, early in the mornings or in the afternoons.
Standing in the back of his traditional dug-out canoe your guide poles you and one other guest along the winding waterways and across tranquil, reed-lined lagoons. Sit back and watch the scenery, spotting birds and wild creatures in this unspoilt habitat as your guide poles you to secluded islands where you enjoy nature walks. Your guide - born and raised in the Delta - shows you the small miracles of this wild place and shares his in depth knowledge as you explore on foot. You may come across big game on your walks in the pristine wilderness with your guide, making for thrilling encounters. You also have the option of setting off on an unforgettable full day exploration with your unarmed guide, taking a picnic lunch with you from camp.
Oddballs’ Enclave is an intimate camp, accommodating only ten guests in its five permanent, walk-in tents for twin or double sharing. The Meru-style canvas tents are raised on wooden platforms providing lovely views out over the delta wetlands and bush. Each tent has a semi-detached bathroom with hot and cold running water and an open-topped bucket shower.
The main lodge areas and decks of this classic camp are ideal spots for watching sun or moon rise, looking out over the pristine delta of Botswana and spotting birds and animals roaming nearby.
This Budget Kalahari & Okavango Lodge Safari ends when we reach Maun in our light aircraft.
