Highlights on this South African Budget Lodge Safari include:
This scenic journey visits top wildlife destinations in South Africa, as well as offering rich cultural experiences in KwaZulu-Natal.
We set off from Johannesburg or Pretoria on the morning of day one. Driving east and then northeast we pass through one of the most beautiful parts of South Africa, the Panorama Route, travelling in an air-conditioned vehicle. Along the way we pause at scenic highlights, including the historic village of Graskop. We also stop to admire the breathtaking views of Blyde River Canyon at God's Window viewpoint and the Lisbon Falls.
This afternoon we settle in at our safari lodge near Hazyview, before embarking on our first game drive in Kruger National Park. We set off on an afternoon or evening game drive, depending on availability (to be confirmed by your guide en route to the lodge).
The game viewing begins as soon as we enter the world-famous Kruger Park at either Pabeni or Numbi Gate. Late afternoons and early evenings are ideal for game viewing, with animals emerging to feed as the heat subsides and the light fades. On the evening drives we use a spotlight to locate shy nocturnal animals and birds after dark. Both the afternoon and evening game drives end back at one of the Kruger Park gates where your driver collects you for the transfer back to the lodge. The charming lodge is located in a natural setting with indigenous vegetation along the Sabi River.
Early in the mornings your safari guide will collect you from the lodge and drive you to Kruger National Park. The whole of day two and three will be spent exploring Kruger on open 4x4 game drives with your professional game ranger.
We stop to take breaks on our game drives in the bush, including a stop at the main restcamp in Kruger Park, Skukuza. Breakfasts and lunches are enjoyed at restcamps in the national park, with breakfasts included in the tour price, but not lunches. Your safari guide shares in-depth knowledge about this vast wilderness area and its wild inhabitants with you on these rewarding game drives. Kruger Park is one of the best game viewing destinations in Africa, and the top safari destination in South Africa. We may be lucky enough to spot all of Africa's Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo) on our game drives in this massive wildlife area.
In the later afternoons we make our way back to the lodge along the Sabi River, for dinner and restful evenings of relaxation.
On day four we have breakfast at the lodge before driving south into KwaZulu-Natal, known as the Kingdom of Zululand.
The seven hour journey takes us to our next lodge inside Ubizane Wildlife Reserve (or similar), just outside of the town of Hluhluwe. Ubizane hosts an array of wildlife, but no big predators, which makes it safe for walks.
After settling in, you can explore the area on foot and unwind at the lodge. We spend the night in chalets raised on stilts in the fever trees. Each chalet has its own balcony looking onto the trees and an en-suite bathroom. Tonight we have dinner and enjoy the peaceful setting at the tree lodge.
Begin the day with a delicious breakfast and then we set off for Dumazulu Cultural Village where we experience rich Zulu culture. Enjoy some high-energy Zulu dancing and singing, meet the locals and learn a few Zulu words. Watch Zulu arts and crafts in the making as baskets are woven and beadwork is done. Take a look at traditional Zulu homes and gain insight into the largest ethnic group in South Africa.
Then we head for iSimangaliso Wetland Park, formerly called Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park. This unique protected area is a World Heritage Site of exceptional beauty and high biodiversity. We take a laid-back boat trip on the St. Lucia estuary in iSimangaliso, watching for birds, hippos and crocodiles while soaking up the scenery.
In the late afternoon we return to the tree lodge for a peaceful evening in the heart of Zululand.
Day four is set aside for game viewing in 4x4 safari vehicles.
On the morning game drive we explore one of South Africa's top safari destinations - Hluhluwe Game Reserve. Part of the famous Hluhluwe–Umfolozi Game Reserve, this is the oldest game reserve in Africa. The prestigious Hluhluwe Game Reserve is renowned for its successful rhino conservation and is also one of the best places to see the Big Five in South Africa.
After lunch back at the lodge we embark on an afternoon game drive in the Ubizane Wildlife Reserve, going in search of white rhinos, zebras, giraffes and wildebeest, as well as a variety of antelope species. The game reserve is also home to more than 350 species of birds.
After our exciting day of game viewing in Zululand we return to the lodge for dinner and leisure time in nature.
On the last day of this Kruger Park & KwaZulu-Natal Lodge Safari we tuck into breakfast before leaving the lodge and travelling back to Johannesburg.
Arriving in Johannesburg our journey to South Africa's wildlife, cultural and scenic gems, comes to a close.
