Itinerary for this Tour

Day 1 to 3: Maun to Sango Safari Camp - Khwai & Moremi, Botswana

At the start of this Botswana Lodge Safari, you will be collected from the Maun airport. The small town of Maun is the main safari travel hub for accessing the Okavango Delta of Botswana, one of the top wilderness destinations in Southern Africa.

From the airport in Maun we drive to our first Botswana safari lodge, the Sango Safari Camp, located about 3.5 hours from the small town. We are based in the Khwai River area for our first three nights, staying at Sango Safari Camp on all three nights.

The safari camp is set along the Khwai River, bordering the world-renowned Moremi Game Reserve. The Khwai River forms the unfenced border between Moremi Game Reserve and the Khwai Concession, which places the lodge in an ideal spot for exploring both wildlife areas. We visit both Khwai and Moremi, between which the wildlife moves freely, embarking on guided game-viewing activities. Options include venturing into the bush on game drives in open safari vehicles, taking bush walks, and exploring the waterways by Mokoro (dug-out canoe).

The camp also offers night-time game drives - a thrilling way to encounter Africa's nocturnal wildlife. Exploring the pristine Moremi Reserve area of the famous Okavango Delta by Mokoro is a must - gliding quietly along the channels as you look out for birds and animals! This intimate camp ensures that visitors enjoy an unforgettable wildlife adventure in the game-rich Moremi and Khwai River regions of Botswana.

The tented camp is built in a shaded spot, offering a back-to-nature safari setting in understated luxury. The safari lodge has a traditional bush-style ambiance reminiscent of colonial times - a classical African safari camp.

On a typical day at Sango Safari Camp, we wake at sunrise and have breakfast, before the morning activity. Return to camp for lunch at about 12h00 and spend time relaxing at camp until high tea in the afternoon. Set off on the afternoon activity at about 15:30 or 16:00 (depending on the season) and have dinner at about 19:30 for 20:00. Embark on a night game drive in the early evening or after dinner, or simply take it easy at the safari lodge.

Day 4 to 6: Chobe Elephant Camp - Ngoma & Chobe, Botswana

On day four of our Botswana Lodge Safari, we say goodbye to the watery Okavango Delta region. In the morning we take off on a scenic flight over the untamed bush and rural Botswana, flying to Kasane.

The exhilarating flight takes us from the Khwai River region to the Chobe National Park area, near the border with Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Touching down at the Kasane airport in our small fixed-wing plane we drive to Chobe Elephant Camp, traveling along the edge of Chobe National Park en route.

Our next safari lodge is an eco-friendly haven, based on the design of traditional homesteads in rural Africa. The eco-camp is located on a stony ridge rising above the floodplains of the Chobe River, so it has great views over the open bush!

We spend our days at Chobe Elephant Camp enjoying a variety of exciting activities, conducted by expert guides from the local area. Wildlife highlights include boat-based game viewing on the Chobe River and open vehicle game drives in Chobe National Park. You also have the opportunity to experience the local culture and see how people live in the rural villages close to the safari camp. In between cultural and game-viewing activities, there is time to relax at the safari lodge, swim in the pool, and watch animals and birds from the viewing deck at the watering hole.

Our days usually begin with breakfast at 6h00 or 6h30, then lunch at about midday, and dinner at about 19h30 or 20h00 (depending on the season, activities, and transfers). Activities take place after breakfast and later in the afternoon with a break at camp in between, except on the full-day trip option. On the full-day excursion, we take a game drive in Chobe National Park after breakfast and a boat cruise on the Chobe River in the afternoon. A picnic lunch is enjoyed either in the bush or on the boat, depending on wildlife sightings on the game drive. After the game viewing boat cruise, which is ideal for spotting elephant herds along the river, we return to camp for sundowners or you can return to Chobe Park for a short game drive before the park closes.

Day 7: Chobe to Kasane, Botswana

Waking up in the African wilderness on the last day of our budget Botswana Lodge Safari we have breakfast together at Chobe Elephant Camp. Then you are transferred to the airport in nearby Kasane. As one of the main travel hubs in northern Botswana, the Kasane airport operates international flights to major cities in the region.

About the Botswana Safari Lodges

Sango Safari Camp - Khwai & Moremi Area

This is a relatively small camp, accommodating only 12 guests at a time, which makes for an intimate and crowd-free stay in the Botswana bush.

The main camp areas and six walk-in canvas tents are set under trees to provide a cool retreat from the sunny African days. The camp is located on the fringes of Khwai village, which makes it easy to visit this rural settlement. Some old traditions can still be seen in Khwai, mostly inhabited by Babukakhwae (San) and Bayei people. We visit Khwai and see how the people live alongside wilderness areas inhabited by wildlife. The village outing is a personal way to gain some insights into the local culture. Sango Camp is actually named after a local family - one of the original families living in the Khwai area. Descendants of the Sango family today partly own the safari camp.

The tented rooms at camp are spacious, well-appointed and comfortable, with en-suite bathrooms featuring al fresco bush showers. Each tent is set up on a raised wooden deck with a small viewing deck where you can sit and survey nature. These Meru-type tents have big windows with mosquito netting to let in the light and fresh air. The tents are decorated in refreshing earthy tones with splashes of vibrant-colored African fabrics, creating calm and cheerful interiors. The main tented areas, like the rooms, feature a combination of characterful wooden and canvas camping-style furniture with natural shades, handcrafted pieces and touches of bright African prints completing the decor. The overall effect - is a nostalgic old-world safari blend of simplicity and luxury in the African wilderness. The camp has a small pool for cooling off on hot days and at night the campfire and glowing lanterns create an intimate and warm atmosphere.

Sango Safari Camp's location on the banks of the Khwai River provides a peaceful setting with nice views over the river and Moremi Game Reserve on the other side. The camp's position between Khwai and Moremi opens up easy access to both wildlife areas, and it also places the camp within a diverse mix of habitats. Sango offers water-based and land-based game viewing across the wide range of open savannah, riverside forests, wooded zones, floodplains, and seasonal waterways. This varied environment supports an unusually rich assortment of numerous wild animals and birds, resulting in outstanding wildlife and bird-watching opportunities! Activities at camp include open game drives in the Moremi Game Reserve, one of Botswana's finest wildlife areas, and in the neighboring Khwai wildlife concession, as well as nature walks and exciting night-time game drives.

Please note: Activities are run according to seasonal variations, so Mokoro trips and bush walks will depend on water levels, weather conditions and visibility, especially in the rainy season.

Chobe Elephant Camp

This young eco-camp is situated on a rocky ridge rising out of the floodplains of the Chobe River, so it has great views over the open wilderness and the river. The safari camp's location is ideal for watching wildlife along the Chobe River, which attracts an abundance of birds and animals. Open vehicle safari drives and Chobe River boat cruises take guests into the African bush to discover the rich animal and birdlife of Chobe.

It is an eco-friendly camp, designed to have a low impact on the natural environment, whilst maximizing the open views that the location offers. The lodge is constructed out of sandbags filled with local sand, creating thick walls that keep the heat and cold at bay. The structure is based on the layout of a typical rural homestead in Botswana, producing a new interpretation of traditional farm living. Cool interiors are furnished and decorated in old-fashioned farmhouse style making it a welcoming and charming space. High ceilings with rustic wooden beams and the deep verandah that opens out onto the bush, give the spacious communal area an airy and light feel. The lounge, dining and bar areas flow into one another featuring comfy couches, a reading alcove, splashes of vibrant color and African ornamentation.

As many as 24 people can stay at Chobe Elephant Camp, so you get the chance to meet more fellow safari-goers than at the first lodge. The camp itself serves as an oasis of comfort and shelter from the intense natural elements at play in the African bush. The safari camp has an inviting pool with a wooden deck for enjoying the lovely views over the watering hole and river.

Accommodation is in en-suite twin or double chalets, as well as a larger, inter-connected family unit. Each chalet has a shady porch where you can sit and relax in the quiet riverine bush. These free-standing chalets are tastefully furnished and fitted with classical wooden finishes, offering simplistic and calm abodes. Touches of animal print add personality to the decor, which is natural and minimalistic in style. The comfortable, private chalets feature indoor and outdoor showers for freshening up in the semi-arid Kalahari environment.

Located on the communal lands of the Sibuya people, one of the highlights of staying at Chobe Elephant Camp is visiting the local village. The Sibuya live in the lowlands of Botswana, practicing subsistence farming and fishing in mokoro vessels. Walking in the village is a close-up cultural experience giving you a chance to see the real lives of the people who stay in this wilderness region.
