Please note that this tour itinerary is a sample based on the best routes. This Botswana Private Safari itinerary can also be tailored to suit individual preferences on request.
Your Botswana Private Safari starts early this morning when our friendly driver collects you from your pre-tour accommodation in Maun.
From Maun, we set off on the four-hour drive to our private safari camp in the Khwai region. This drive takes us into the heart of the bush in an open safari vehicle.
Alternatively, you can book your incoming flight to arrive at Maun Airport early on the first morning and take an optional scenic flight (at extra cost) over the Okavango Delta to the Khwai region.
Our first mobile camp is set up in the Khwai and Moremi region. Located on the eastern fringes of the Okavango Delta, this is one of Botswana's prime wildlife areas.
Later in the afternoon, it's time to embark on your first 4x4 game drive. Your experienced safari guide takes you in search of the diverse animals found in the Khwai region of northern Botswana.
After your first exhilarating game drive, we return to our mobile safari camp in the wilderness. This evening, we enjoy dinner and drinks under the stars, swapping tales around the campfire. At the end of the day, fall asleep in your comfortable bed as you listen to the sounds of the African bush.
You have the option of flying from Maun to Khwai on the first morning of this Botswana Safari at extra cost. If you prefer not to overnight in Maun before your safari, or simply want to kick your safari off with a scenic flight over the Okavango Delta this option can be pre-booked by arrangement.
If you opt for the scenic delta flight to Khwai you need to arrive at Maun Airport early on the first morning. From the Maun Airport, you can then take the optional scenic flight over the Okavango Delta. Please note that this is an optional extra activity, that is not included in the tour price.
The Khwai area of Botswana is renowned for its exceptional game viewing. On this Private Botswana Safari, we explore the Khwai Community Concession. This concession area covers 1800 km² (695 mi²) of the Khwai region along the Khwai River. The Khwai Concession area is owned and managed by the local community. Thus our game drives in the Khwai Community Concession directly benefit the local people and help to support wildlife conservation in Botswana.
The Khwai Floodplains are sandwiched between Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park. There are no fences separating these game reserves and as a result, there is a massive amount of wildlife movement here. Khwai is one of the best places to spot African wild dogs in Botswana. Other predators are also commonly sighted, including lions, leopards, and hyenas.
The Khwai River is a popular spot for hippos, waterbuck, lechwe, and crocodiles. The woodland areas host healthy populations of zebras, buffalos, giraffes, and antelopes, including roan and sable. The ubiquitous elephant is also plentiful here.
Over the next two days of our Botswana Private Safari, we explore the Khwai Concession and Moremi Game Reserve.
In the early mornings, we set off on game drives in our open-sided 4x4 safari vehicle. Your private safari guide takes you into the Khwai Concession area and Moremi Game Reserve, two of the best Botswana game reserves. After our morning game drives, we return to our private safari camp and tuck into a hearty brunch. Then you are free to take a nap and relax at the mobile camp.
In the afternoons, tea is served at the camp before we embark on late-afternoon game drives. Afternoon game drives are followed by dinner and drinks under the stars back at the mobile safari camp where a campfire awaits.
On one of our days in the Khwai region, we will embark on a guided mekoro trip. This unforgettable excursion replaces one of your game drives. A mokoro is a type of canoe, based on the traditional dug-out canoe (mokoro) used in this part of Africa. The mokoro is poled through the waterways of the Okavango by local guides in a similar fashion to gondoliers. Mekoro trips are ideal for water-based game viewing and exploring the waterways of the wild delta region of Botswana.
At the end of your adventure-filled days on safari in Botswana, you retire to your spacious dome tent for a good night's rest. The tents have en-suite bathrooms with warm bucket showers and bush toilets for added convenience and privacy.
The only official game reserve in the Okavango Delta of Botswana, Moremi is one of the best safari destinations in Africa. Moremi Game Reserve is renowned for its diverse wildlife and habitats (grasslands, woodlands, lagoons, and islands).
Moremi offers superb game viewing throughout the year and is home to the Big 5 of Africa (lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo, and elephant). The game reserve also hosts high concentrations of African wild dogs, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, and red lechwe antelopes, among others. The Moremi Game Reserve is a birding paradise too, with over 400 species of birds recorded.
Day four of our Botswana Private Safari starts with breakfast at our mobile safari camp. Then you are transferred to the Savuti Marsh in Chobe National Park in a 4x4 safari vehicle.
Most of the day is spent exploring this new part of northern Botswana, famous for its dramatic wildlife sightings. Your guide takes you in search of the predators and other big mammals found in the renowned Savuti area of Chobe Park. Along the way, we stop for a picnic lunch in the wilderness.
In the meantime, the camp crew breaks up camp and moves it to our next scenic camping spot in Savuti. By the time you reach the Savuti camp in the late afternoon, the tents are set up and your clean bed awaits. Freshen up and settle in at our authentic Savuti camp in the middle of the bush.
Dinner and drinks are served under the stars, followed by leisure time around the campfire. As in Khwai, retreat to your comfortable bed for a well-deserved rest at the end of your days on safari in Savuti.
On days five and six of our Botswana Camping Safari, we explore the Savuti area of Chobe National Park. One of the best game viewing areas in Botswana, Savuti is world-renowned for its dramatic wildlife sightings.
Our days begin with an early morning coffee at the Savuti camp. Then we head out on thrilling game drives in our open-sided 4x4 safari vehicle. Break for brunch and a rest back at camp, before having tea and embarking on our afternoon game drives with sundowners.
On one of our two full days in Chobe National Park, you can join a highly recommended boat cruise on the Chobe River. The boat cruises in Chobe are famous for offering excellent bird and animal watching from the water.
Back at our private Savuti camp, we have dinner and drinks, settling into laid-back evenings of storytelling around the campfire.
We're up early on the last day of our Botswana Private Safari to make the most of our remaining time out in the African bush.
This morning we embark on a final 4x4 game drive in Chobe National Park before we have brunch back at our Savuti camp.
Then it is time to say goodbye to the African bush and return to Maun. You are transferred to the Maun Airport where sadly, our Botswana Camping Safari to Khwai & Savuti comes to an end.
This Botswana Private Safari can be tailored to suit you. If there's something you want to change or add, talk to us. One of our friendly safari experts will be happy to tailor-make this tour itinerary to meet your requests.
You can add an optional scenic flight over the Okavango Delta to this Botswana Camping Safari, at extra cost.
These optional Okavango Delta flights can be done in a fixed-wing plane or helicopter, and need to be pre-booked. A scenic flight over the Delta to the Khwai region can be added to the start of your Botswana Safari (at extra cost) if you arrive at Maun Airport early on the first morning. Alternatively, you can do an optional scenic flight over the Okavango Delta (pre-booked) after your safari on request.
Viewed from the air the Okavango Delta unfolds to reveal its vastness, a watery wonderland home to a large variety of wildlife. This aerial view is a photographer's dream - lookout for elephants wandering through the wetland and hippos wallowing in the channels.
