Enjoy an authentic bush adventure on this affordable tented camping safari that truly takes you into Kruger National Park, one of Africa's finest wildlife reserves.
At 06h00 on the first morning of this trip you are collected, in an air-conditioned Toyota Quantum, from your accommodation in the city of Johannesburg or from the O.R. Tambo International Airport. Leaving Johannesburg, we head east and make our way through the scenic lowveld landscapes to Kruger National Park. At 12h00 we pass through the small farming town of Hazyview, before reaching our destination in Kruger. We arrive at our tented camp inside the fenced Pretoriuskop Rest Camp, in the southern part of Kruger National Park, in time for lunch at 13h00.
After lunch at the Pretoriuskop Rest Camp restaurant (own account) there is time to get ready before we set off on our first game drive at 16h00, after a cup of tea or coffee at the camp. You are accompanied by knowledgeable guides in open-sided safari vehicles, venturing into African bushveld to discover its incredible diversity of fauna and flora. The most acclaimed game reserve in South Africa , this vast 19 485 km² area offers endless exploration and adventure, with some of the best game viewing in the world, including the popular Big Five.
We return to our camp before the Kruger National Park gates close, in time for dinner which is served in the dining tent at 19h00. After dinner we head back into the bush for an exhilarating night game drive in Kruger National Park. Night time drives are an absolute must to witness the wildlife-rich bush come alive after dark. Powerful spotlights ensure that you don't miss any incredible nocturnal sightings, including lions, jackals, bush babies, leopards, servals, porcupines and owls. Night drives can be the most rewarding safari encounters filled with the spirit of adventure and drama of the wild in the dark.
After the night drive guests return to their safari tents for a good nights rest after a day of excitement. The tents are bigger and more comfortable than conventional camping tents, and each has twin beds and basic amenities.
Please note: The night game drive with SANParks, may take place on day two or three if required.
Day two sees a bright and early 06h00 start to make the most of the early morning hours which are ideal for spotting animals and birds. We have a quick coffee, tea and rusks, before heading off into Kruger National Park. Be sure to take a warm jacket for the morning chill. Day two will give you a better understanding of the sheer scale of this wild reserve, measuring the size of some small countries. The more time one spends in Kruger Park the more you want to explore.
As the gates open we enter the reserve (weather permitting) and begin searching the lowveld terrain for signs of animal life. Early mornings often offer rewarding scenes from the previous night's hunt or predator sightings near the roadsides. We stop for a hot coffee or tea and a bit of a break before continuing on our drive until breakfast at either the well-established Skukuza or Afsaal rest camps. This area is known for great lion sightings amongst the big boulders.
If some guests are scheduled to leave Kruger today, we make our way back to Pretoriuskop by 11h30 where we have lunch (own account). Guests will have time after lunch to relax, indulge in a swim or take a nap until tea time, before we embark on a late afternoon game drive into Kruger at 16h00. We go in search of the great Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard) as well as the myriad of other animals, big and small. Those leaving today are ready for the transfer at 13h00.
In the event that no guests on the morning game drive are departing today then the guide discusses various options with the group and the game viewing continues on a full day in the bushveld. A lunch stop (own account) is scheduled at one of the rest camps, before continuing with the afternoon leg of the game drive, returning to Pretoriuskop camp by 16h00. Then it is leisure time until dinner. For both the morning and afternoon and the full day game drive, dinner is served at 19h00 and the evening is yours for rest and relaxation around the campfire, recounting stories from the day spent in the bush.
Day three follows a similar program: again determined by whether guests are departing on day three or staying on at the camp.
Your guides are able to assist you with booking optional extra activities (own account) conducted by the official SANParks rangers. The Kruger Park guides are authorised to facilitate added night game drives and bush walks amongst other adventurous activities (own account). Feel free to discuss these options with your guides.
This is the final day of your bushveld experience in the beautiful lowveld region of South Africa. To start the day coffee, tea and rusks are served at the camp before setting off into Kruger, nice and early for our final few hours amid the flora and fauna of this magical part of the world. We aim to get into the reserve as soon as the gates open in the hope of catching those rare and special early morning sightings. The first light also presents guests with stunning photo opportunities as the rising sun bathes the landscape in a warm glow. By now your game spotting skills will have markedly improved and your eyes will scan the surrounding bush expertly for movement, shapes and any signs of animal life.
As on the previous days, we take a breather for breakfast in the scenic area of Skukuza or Afsaal before continuing on our search for some last epic sightings and memorable photo opportunities. By 11h30 we are back at Pretoriuskop Rest Camp, leaving for Johannesburg at 12h00.
Reaching Hazyview at 12h45 we pause before travelling on to Johannesburg which we aim to reach by 18h00. You are dropped off at your post-tour accommodation, in Sandton or at the O.R. Tambo Airport where we bid our farewells.
About the Camp
The tented camp is conveniently located in the well-loved Pretoriuskop Rest Camp, the oldest camp in Kruger National Park. The perimeter of the Pretoriuskop camp is fenced in to ensure that predators and other large animals don not find themselves wandering into the camp, yet we are surrounded by the wilderness of the reserve which creates the experience of truly being deep in the African bush. You can relax while still experiencing the atmosphere of nature's wild side.
The camp is comprised of eight safari tents, each simply furnished with twin beds, fans, bedside tables and lamps. These safari-style tents are more spacious and comfortable than the standard dome tents normally used on camping tours. The tents have wooden flooring, power points and electric blankets in winter. The tents are designed with lovely large windows, all fitted with mosquito netting allowing them to be opened allow the breeze to drift in but keeping insects and other creatures out. Each tent has a private lamp-lit patio area with two camping chairs for gazing the night sky and simply relaxing outdoors.
This is a basic no-frills camp with a large lounge-dining tent and an open-air fire pit. The communal bathrooms are shared with the Pretoriuskop Camping Grounds, and are serviced daily, as are the camp's safari tents. Our guests have access to all the facilities at Pretoriuskop Rest Camp which include a big swimming pool, bar, restaurant and shop. WiFi is not available but there is cell phone reception.
Our local safari guides take pride in making their guests feel well taken care of and they genuinely enjoy sharing their in-depth knowledge about the animals, birds and plants of the Kruger Park ensuring you leave with wonderful memories and a wealth of new knowledge.
