Go game viewing with experienced guides, exploring Kruger in open-sided safari vehicles on morning and afternoon game drives. Also, embark on a night game drive with the official Kruger rangers, searching out unusual nocturnal sightings. Spotting the Big Five and a rich variety of other wild animals and birds is the absolute highlight of this Kruger Safari Adventure!
Day one sees an early departure from Johannesburg once you have been collected by our driver, in an air-conditioned microbus, from your arranged accommodation or the O.R. Tambo International Airport. Leaving the city of Johannesburg we head northeast for about 450km, stopping in the small farming town of Hazyview, in the Lowveld of Mpumalanga, by midday.
From there we continue to the world-famous Kruger National Park, making our way to the tented safari camp in Pretoriuskop Rest Camp. The oldest rest camp within Kruger Park, Pretoriuskop also lies at the highest altitude of all the Kruger camps.
We arrive at the intimate camp in time to enjoy lunch (own account) at the Pretoriuskop Rest Camp restaurant and settle into our safari-style tented accommodation. Tea and coffee are served at around 16h00 and then we will head off on our first late afternoon game drive in the southern region of Kruger National Park. We will be accompanied by qualified guides in 4x4 safari vehicles, immediately introducing guests to the heart of the bushveld experience and to the magic of one of the best reserves in Africa. The vast 19,485 km² size and wild beauty of this environment is majestic, and Kruger is home to an incredible diversity of wild animals and birds.
We exit Kruger Park at closing time and aim to get back to camp in good time for dinner at 19h00 which is prepared for us by our guides and served in the dining tent.
After dinner it is time for us to head back out into the Kruger Park for the highly anticipated night drive accompanied by the South African National Parks (SANParks) rangers. This exciting activity is the game viewing highlight for many visitors and the sightings of wild animals in their natural habitats at night is simply thrilling. Spotlights are used to search for game and nocturnal sightings can include lions, jackals, bush babies, leopards, servals, porcupines and civets.
After our night time venture we head back to the comforts of camp for a well-deserved night's rest in our cosy safari tents. The tents are more spacious than conventional dome tents, and are furnished with twin beds rather than camping beds and mattresses, ensuring a restful night.
Please note: The night game drive with SANParks rangers, may take place on day two if required.
After our morning tea/coffee and rusks we head off into Kruger National Park to take full advantage of the beautiful early hours of the day which are renowned for the best sightings of wildlife, particularly predators. By the end of today we would have fully experienced the sheer vastness of this incredible protected wild space. You will also begin to appreciate just how diverse the fauna and flora of Kruger are.
We enter Kruger Park (weather permitting) at opening time and begin to search the African bush for signs of wildlife. Once we have been out in the bush for a while we take a refreshment stop and stretch our legs before continuing on our search for animal encounters. Later, we stop for breakfast at one of the established rest camps in Kruger (Skukuza or Afsaal).
If there are guests on the game drive who are scheduled to depart Kruger today, then we make our way back to Pretoriuskop by 11h30. We will have lunch (own account) at the camp and enjoy some leisure time in the sun around the pool until afternoon tea. After tea and coffee we set out at 14h00 on a late afternoon game drive in Kruger. A visit to Kruger Park inevitably includes searching for the famous Big Five and many visitors are rewarded with multiple sightings and wonderful memories. We return to the safari camp before the gates close and enjoy an evening under the stars around the campfire.
If there are no guests on the morning game drive departing today then the guide discusses options with the group and the game viewing continues. In this case, we spend a full day in Kruger Park, with lunch (own account) at one of the rest camps en route. After a full day safari out in the bush we return to Pretoriuskop Camp at 16h00, relaxing at camp until dinner.
For both of the above options, dinner is served at 19h00 and the rest of the evening is open to savour the sounds and sights of the African night sky.
Setting off into Kruger as the gates of the national park open (weather permitting) we have a good few hours of game viewing ahead of us while the day is still cool. Your guide will use his extensive knowledge and experience to point out all the fascinating signs of animal activity in this huge reserve, particularly searching for signs of sought-after wildlife.
We break for breakfast, as on our previous two mornings, at Skukuza or Afsaal, before continuing our game drive through some spectacular boulder-strewn landscapes which offer fantastic photo opportunities. By 11h30 we are back at Pretoriuskop Rest Camp, departing at 12h00, stopping in Hazyview at 12h45 and reaching Johannesburg at about 18h00. You are dropped off at your post-tour accommodation, in Sandton or at the O.R. Tambo Airport where this Kruger Tented Safari comes to an end.
About the Camp
The tented camp is set within the well-known Pretoriuskop Rest Camp, inside Kruger National Park. Pretoriuskop camp is completely fenced in to keep out predators and large animals, yet it still manages to maintain the feeling that you are out in the bushveld surrounded by wild open space. This camp is very well situated within Kruger Park and besides being the oldest and most historical rest camp in Kruger it is great for families and is very peaceful.
There are eight comfortable safari-style tents at the camp, each furnished with twin beds, fans, bedside tables and lamps. These tents are spacious and comfortable and are fitted with wooden flooring, power points and electric blankets for cold winter nights. The tents are designed with large windows, fitted with mosquito netting, so that they can be opened up to allow the breeze through while keeping insects and other unwanted nighttime creatures out. Every safari tent also has a small, lamp-lit patio with camping chairs, for star gazing and relaxing outdoors.
This is a classic, no-frills camp with a big lounge-dining tent and an open-air fire pit. The communal bathrooms (shared with Pretoriuskop Camping Grounds) and the safari tents are serviced daily. Guests have access to the lovely facilities at Pretoriuskop Rest Camp which include a swimming pool, bar, restaurant and shop. The camp does not have WiFi but cell phone reception is available.
Our professional local guides are here to ensure that our guests are well taken care of and that they experience the Kruger National Park to its fullest, leaving with memories they will treasure.
