Experience Kruger National Park on extensive game drives with experienced guides, exploring this diverse wildlife area in open safari vehicles. Get ready for unforgettable encounters with an incredible array of wild animals and birds across the many habitats of this immense protected area.
Stay at an intimate tented camp within Pretoriuskop Rest Camp, located inside the world-renowned Kruger National Park. Accommodation is in safari tents offering more space than dome tents, taking you back to the basics, but with the added comfort of beds and a few simple amenities, such as electricity, fans and linen. Enjoy an authentic bush adventure on this affordable tented camping safari that truly takes you into Kruger National Park, one of Africa's finest wildlife reserves.
On day one you are collected from your pre-tour accommodation in Johannesburg or from the O.R. Tambo International Airport, after 6h00 in the morning. From there, we travel to Kruger National Park in an air-conditioned Toyota Quantum. At 12h00 we arrive in Hazyview and by about 13h00 we reach our tented camp at Pretoriuskop Rest Camp, in the southern part of Kruger National Park.
After settling in we have lunch (own account) at the Pretoriuskop Camp restaurant. Then it's time to get ready for our first game drive, enjoying a cup of tea or coffee before we set off at 16h00. Your experienced guide takes you into Kruger Park in an open-sided 4x4 safari vehicle, introducing you to the African bushveld and its fascinating inhabitants. The most famous game park in South Africa, Kruger hosts an unbelievable variety of flora and fauna across the wide range of habitats encompassed in its 19 485 km² area.
We return to the tented camp when the gates of Kruger Park close and have dinner at 19h00. Dinner is followed by a thrilling night game drive in Kruger National Park! The night drive is conducted by official game rangers from South African National Parks (SANParks) in their safari vehicles. Heading back into the wildlife-rich bush after dark, spotlights are used to show the way and search out nocturnal creatures. Watch for nocturnal sightings including lions, jackals, genets, leopards, servals, porcupines and civets. Being out in the bush at night is an exhilarating experience - simply knowing that there are large predators and all sorts of wild creatures around you in the dark.
After our nighttime adventure we return to the camp for a good night's rest in our roomy safari tents. The tents are bigger and taller than dome tents, and feature twin beds that offer more comfort than camping beds and mattresses.
Please note: the night game drive with SANParks may take place on one of the other evenings if required.
Wake up bright and early! The early morning hours are ideal for spotting animals and birds, so we have a quick coffee/tea and rusks, then set off into Kruger National Park. Today you will get to experience the vastness of this massive protected area of South Africa. You can begin to see just how diverse the landscapes and life forms of Kruger are, as we drive around in our open safari vehicle.
As the gates open we enter the national park (weather allowing) and begin scanning the untamed African bush for signs of life. Along the way we stop for a refreshing coffee and tea, stretching our legs before proceeding. After watching the bush come to life and exploring further, we pause for breakfast at one of the established rest camps in Kruger (Skukuza or Afsaal).
If there are guests on the game drive who are leaving Kruger today, then we make our way back to Pretoriuskop by 11h30. Have lunch (own account) at the camp and take a quick dip in the pool or relax until tea time. After tea and coffee we embark on a late afternoon game drive, driving back into Kruger at 16h00. We go in search of the Big Five and the host of other animals found in Kruger, returning to the safari camp before the gates close.
If there are no guests on the morning game drive departing today then the guide discusses options with the group and the game viewing continues. In this case, we spend a full day game viewing in Kruger Park, stopping for lunch (own account) at one of the rest camps en route. On the full day game drive we return to Pretoriuskop Camp at 16h00, enjoying leisure time until dinner.
For both the morning and afternoon game drive combination and the full day game drive, dinner is served at 19h00 and the rest of the evening is free for rest and relaxation at the camp.
Days three, four and five follow a similar program: an early morning game drive including a breakfast stop and an afternoon game drive followed by dinner at our tented camp. The exact itinerary depends on whether guests on the morning game drive are departing on that day, in which case the vehicle returns to Pretoriuskop in time for lunch so that departing guests are ready for the transfer at 13h00. On the full day game drives lunch (own account) is enjoyed at a rest camp during the game drive.
The guides are happy to help book optional activities conducted by the official SANParks rangers. The Kruger Park guides are authorised to take you on extra night game drives and bush walks, should you want to do extra activities (own account). Our safari guides can also fill you in on optional (extra cost) adventure activities and scenic drives that can be arranged during your stay.
Setting off into Kruger as the gates of the national park open (weather permitting) we have a good few hours of game viewing ahead of us. Your guide searches out the abundant animals and birds found in this huge reserve, keeping an eagle eye out for particularly sought-after wildlife sightings. As on the previous days, we pause for breakfast at Skukuza or Afsaal before continuing our search for epic sightings and one-of-a-kind photo opportunities. By 11h30 we are back at Pretoriuskop Rest Camp and by 12h00 we leave our camp in Kruger behind.
At 12h45 we stop in Hazyview and then at 13h00 we continue to Johannesburg, arriving at about 18h00. You are dropped off at your post-tour accommodation, in Sandton and at the O.R. Tambo Airport where we say goodbye.
About the Tented Camp
The tented camp is set within the well-known Pretoriuskop Rest Camp, inside Kruger National Park. The rest camp is fenced in to keep out predators and large animals, yet it is surrounded by the national park, immersing you in the bushveld. The camp serves as a convenient base given its location inside Kruger.
There are eight safari tents at the camp, each featuring basic furnishings including twin beds, fans, bedside tables and lamps. These safari tents are more spacious and comfortable than the standard dome tents used on camping tours. The tents are fitted with wooden flooring, power points and electric blankets in winter, each with linen, towels and bedding included. Big windows, fitted with mosquito netting, can be opened up to allow the breeze to drift in. Every safari tent also has a small, lamp-lit patio area with two camping chairs, for star gazing and relaxing outdoors.
This is an authentic, no-frills camp with a big lounge-dining tent and an open-air fire pit. The communal bathrooms (shared with Pretoriuskop Camp Grounds) are serviced daily, along with the safari tents. Guests have access to the facilities at Pretoriuskop Rest Camp. These include a swimming pool, bar, restaurant and shop. There is no WiFi but there is cell phone reception.
Our local safari guides are there to take care of guests and share their in-depth knowledge about the diverse flora, fauna and habitats in the wilderness around us.
