Quick Itinerary Overview

Experience the once-in-a-lifetime achievement of climbing to the top of Africa's highest mountain - Mount Kilimanjaro.

This guided trek to the summit of Kilimanjaro follows the Lemosho Route, widely considered as the best hiking trail on the mountain. One of the main advantages of hiking along the Lemosho Route is the higher success rate in reaching the summit, because the route is one of the longest which allows for more time to acclimatise. In addition to maximizing your chances of standing on the Roof of Africa, the relatively new Lemosho Route is also one of the most beautiful and remote routes. Owing to the remoteness of this scenic route you will encounter less foot traffic along much of your hike.

Approaching the majestic peak from the west this Kilimanjaro Hike passes through changing landscapes and vegetation zones, with the chance of spotting game lower on the slopes. The scenery along the Lemosho Route is dramatic and the views from different sides of Kilimanjaro are spectacular. You hike across the Shira Plateau below the Kibo ice fields, before joining the Machame Route and making the ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest summit on Kilimanjaro.

Itinerary for this Tour

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha - Tanzania

Arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport in northern Tanzania, you will be greeted by our driver and transferred to the town of Usa River, just outside of Arusha. We spend the night at the Meru View Lodge (or similar) our pre-trek lodge in Usa River. Located 23km from Arusha city, Usa River is the capital of Meru District.

The rest of the day is free for you to do as you please - rest after your travels, prepare for the trek and enjoy the peaceful setting at the lodge with its tropical 10-acre gardens and pool. Alternatively, you can take a taxi to nearby Arusha, to explore the bustling town on the lower slopes of Mount Meru.

In the evening we meet for a preliminary talk at the lodge and do an equipment check, in preparation for the unforgettable trek up Kilimanjaro.

  • Dinner

Day 2: Arusha – Londorossi Gate (2250m) – Big Tree Camp (2800m)

In the morning, you will be collected from the lodge and taken to Londorossi Gate at 2250m above sea level. Arriving at the gate you are registered by the National Park authorities. Then we continue along a bumpy track for 15km, heading into the dense rainforest where the starting point of the Lemosho Route is located. After lunch, we follow a moderately steep track through an amazing, unspoilt natural forest.

We walk for about two and a half hours before reaching our first overnight stop on the trek up Kilimanjaro, the Big Tree Camp at 2800m. Birds and wild animals, such as colobus monkeys, are often spotted here, so keep your eyes open.

We overnight in twin-share tents with sleeping mats, at the lovely Big Tree Camp. Single travellers are usually paired up with another group member of the same gender, sharing a tent for the duration of the hike.

  • Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Please note: Single tent occupancy can be arranged at extra cost, if you prefer not to share a tent while hiking.

Day 3: Big Tree Camp (2780m) – Shira Camp 2 (3850m)

Today’s long trek starts on a small trail which passes through the rainforest. As we climb the forest gradually thins out, giving way to heath (scrub) and moorland vegetation, where Erica and Lobelia plants start to dominate the landscape. We cross the Shira Ridge at about 3600m and after 4 to 5 hours of trekking further, we reach Shira Camp 1.

Here we stop for lunch, relax for a while and enjoy the fantastic views of Mt Meru and the Rift Valley. For the last part of the climb (approximately three hours), we climb another 250 meters in altitude. The landscape continues to change as we walk across ground that was once a lava flow. Just before reaching Shira Camp 2, we pass the giant Senecias that can grow to almost 9 meters in height.

We camp at Shira Camp 2 for the night and with a little luck, enjoy the wonderful view of the Kibo summit in the warm evening light.

  • Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4: Shira Camp 2 (3850m) – Lava Tower (4640m) – Barranco Camp (3950m)

Today, we climb approximately 700m, but we camp at an elevation only slightly higher than the previous night. This allows your body to acclimatise, when we reach over 4500m in height, before descending again. This climb enables you to see how your body reacts to such high altitudes. The trek begins with a long ascent above the Shira Plateau in the direction of the Lava Tower Hut (4600m).

The vegetation becomes more sparse as the landscape moves toward an afro-alpine desert. The climb passes through the spacious and sweeping Barranco Valley with its giant Senecias and Lobelia plants. After 6 to 7 hours walking, you will arrive at perhaps the most beautiful camp on the Kilimanjaro- the Barranco Camp. Here you will stay for the night.

  • Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 5: Barranco Camp (3950m) – Karanga Camp (4250m)

Today’s trek involves numerous ascents and descents as we continue higher. Shortly after the start, you will tackle the steepest part of the entire route – the Barranco Wall. Every now and then, you may need to hold on tight with your hands, but nothing too extreme. Safety is paramount and your guide will secure you with a safety line, whenever necessary.

Then we walk along the mountain ridge offering fantastic views of the southern glacier of Kibo, as well as the breathtaking sight of the Kibo summit. Walking time will be three to four hours.

  • Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 6: Karanga Camp (4250m) - Barafu Camp (4640m)

On day six we walk along a trail that passes through the afro-alpine dessert, until reaching the destination for today – the Barafu Camp. This camp is situated at an altitude of 4600m and will be reached in about 3 to 4 hours of trekking.

After a filling meal, you can get some sleep in preparation for the climb up to the summit of Kilimanjaro!

  • Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 7: Barafu Camp (4640m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Mweka Camp (3100m)

We wake and have some hot tea and a light snack in the middle of the night, setting off on the last stretch of our hike at midnight.

Walking on with torchlights we climb up the scree and ash paths of Kibo Peak, the highest volcanic cone of Mount Kilimanjaro. After five to seven hours of walking through the night, we arrive at Stella Point, on the crater rim of the dormant Kibo volcano. Another one to two hours of climbing along the crater ridge leads us to the summit of Uhuru Peak at 5895m.

Standing on the Roof of Africa, you can see out over the surrounding summits and landscapes below, as the sun rises. Watching the sunrise from the top of Africa's tallest mountain is a moving and exhilarating experience! Bask in your achievement, soaking up the spectacular scenery in the warm light of dawn.

After taking a short break and numerous photographs at the summit, we begin our descent. We return to Camp Barafu just before midday, where the rest of the climbing crew is waiting for us. Tuck into a warm meal and take a well-deserved break of one to two hours, before we hike to Camp Mweka (3000m), about three hours away. At Camp Mweka, we enjoy dinner, followed by a relaxing evening and a very good night’s sleep.

  • Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 8: Mweka Camp (3100m) – Mweka Gate (1800m) - Arusha

The final leg of your adventure begins after breakfast with a traditional farewell ceremony from the mountain guides. Then we make a gentle two to three hour descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where the driver awaits.

From Mweka Gate we transfer back to the lodge near Arusha, for a comfortable overnight. Back at the lodge we rest up, relax under the trees and enjoy the pool, reliving our epic feat of summating Mount Kilimanjaro.

  • Breakfast & Dinner

Day 9: Arusha – Kilimanjaro Airport

After breakfast at our lodge, this extraordinary Kilimanjaro Hiking Tour comes to an end.

Transfer back to Kilimanjaro Airport for your onward travels.
