This Garden Route Safari departs from the coastal city of Port Elizabeth, in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Meet up with your travel companions and guides in the afternoon and set off for our first camp, located in a private game reserve near Addo Park.
Addo is a unique, malaria-free Game Park, providing a haven for one of the world's densest populations of African elephants, hence the name of the national park. Addo Elephant Park also boasts many of Africa's other big game species, including the rest of the Big Five, namely leopard, rhino, lion and buffalo. Other large mammals include the spotted hyena, zebra, wildebeest, kudu, eland and hartebeest, among other antelope species. In addition to the famous land animals, whales and great white sharks can also be seen along the coast and the park is inhabited by the endemic flightless dung beetle.
This evening you have the chance to embark on an optional sunset game drive in Addo, enjoying sundowners in the African bush at the end of your first day on safari.
This safari comes with an optional Activity Package at an additional cost. The itinerary includes these highly-recommended activities. Contact African Budget Safaris for a detailed breakdown of what is included in the Activity Package and see the Full Pricing Information above for the cost of the Activity Package.
On the morning of day two, we head into Addo Elephant Park on a game drive in search of African wildlife and birds. Addo Park is the third largest national park in the country, stretching from the inland Karoo region down to the coast, even including two islands hosting large breeding colonies of African penguins and gannets. Game drives in this 1800km² game park provide a range of exciting wildlife sightings in the rugged African bushveld.
Back on the road, we continue west to the beautiful Tsitsikamma area of the Garden Route, stopping off in the surfing hotspot of Jeffrey's Bay en route. Tsitsikamma National Park is part of the Garden Route National Park, encompassing Knysna Lakes and Wilderness National Park. The idyllic location of Tsitsikamma Park makes it a diverse and scenic protected area, lying between the Tsitsikamma Mountains and Indian Ocean.
The park stretches about 80km's along the coastline and includes the belt of sea along its shores for about 5km's out into the ocean, making it one of the largest marine protected areas worldwide. In addition to the rich marine ecosystems protected by the national park, Tsitsikamma also features South Africa's endemic Fynbos biome, as well as indigenous forests. Between the marine habitats, Fynbos covered hills and forested ravines this park provides habitats for a diverse collection of birds and animals.
On the morning of day three we walk along the rugged coast to a waterfall, covering the first section of the famous Otter Trail, starting and ending at Storms River. This challenging and stunning trail is named after the Cape clawless otter, found in the southern Cape of South Africa. If you prefer a more laid-back morning then you can explore the Storms River Mouth, walking along the boardwalks and across the suspension bridge. In the afternoon optional activities include a treetop canopy tour giving you a birds-eye view of the indigenous forests in this scenic wilderness area.
We camp at a backpackers lodge in the village of Storms River. Facilities include a bar, shared ablutions (hot showers) and internet.
This morning we continue west along the Indian Ocean to the scenic Nature’s Valley, where you can relax on the beach or go hiking in the coastal forest.
Then, a short drive further along the Garden Route brings us to the popular seaside resort town of Plettenberg Bay, known for its gorgeous beaches. Plett, as locals call it, has three Blue Flag beaches awarded this title for scoring high on environmental and tourist-friendly scales. Your guide helps with planning and booking activities to ensure that you get the most out of today.
The safari truck will travel between selected points of interest on a set schedule providing you with the freedom to join or leave activities as you choose. At the end of the day we meet up on the sandy shores of the Keurbooms Lagoon and this evening we celebrate our adventures with an optional meal out in Plettenberg Bay.
Tonight we camp at a lodge with a swimming pool, near Plettenberg Bay.
The day kicks off at an easy pace, with time to do an optional activity in Plettenberg Bay before we get going. Whale watching safaris are a highlight in the Plett area, which is a whale watching hot spot in season (July to October).
Next, our Budget Garden Route Tour travels inland, taking us over breathtaking mountain passes in the Outeniqua range; which separates the coast from the semi-arid Little Karoo region.
Leaving the green belt along the ocean we make our way to Oudtshoorn, a historic Karoo town known for Cango Caves and its ostrich farms. Arriving in the Oudtshoorn area we make our way to the famous Cango Caves. The underground cave network is made up of a grand complex of interconnected caverns and passageways. We take a tour of the caves to see the magnificent stalagmites and stalactites in the large limestone caves.
We camp in Oudtshoorn at a resort with a pool, internet and shared ablution facilities (with hot showers).
On day six we start with a guided tour of an ostrich farm in Oudtshoorn to get up close to the world's largest birds. Oudtshoorn's ostrich industry is huge - this is the place to see plenty of these big flightless birds and buy all kinds of ostrich-related souvenirs from ostrich feathers to eggs and biltong.
Then we drive along the Route 62 of the Klein Karoo, known for its interesting farmstalls, arts and wines. Along the way we stop to sample and see the homemade treats and local arts and crafts, at one of the many quaint farmstalls along the Route 62. One of our colourful stops is at a quirky country pub, with an eye-catching name - Ronnie's Sex Shop.
Continuing into the Western Cape we head to Somerset West in the Cape Winelands, where you can eat out tonight. We overnight in en-suite rooms at a Cape Winelands hotel, with a swimming pool, bar, internet and laundry services.
After breakfast, we travel to Stellenbosch, in the heart of the Western Cape’s Wine Region. This is the second oldest European-established town in South Africa, home to one of the country's leading universities. Arriving in the historic town you are free to explore the leafy streets on foot to see the monuments, museums, art galleries and cafes that give the town its charm. After Stellenbosch we stop at a wine estate to taste locally produced cheese and wine (included in Activity Package), before driving to Cape Town.
Completing the last leg of our budget Garden Route Tour through South Africa, our memorable journey ends in the beautiful city of Cape Town.
If you are doing the cultural tour of Cape Town (included in Activity Package) you will head off from the city in a smaller tour vehicle. The cultural tour starts with the historic neighbourhood of District Six and then takes you into the townships of Langa and Khayelitsha. Visiting the informal settlements is an eye-opening experience for many, offering insight into the lives of many South Africans.
