Why Travel to Lesotho? by

Lesotho, the only country in the world that lies entirely above 1000m, is a tiny mountain kingdom surrounded by South Africa. This landlocked country is roughly the same size as Belgium, covering 30 355 sq km’s.

Lesotho is dominated by the rugged mountains of the Maluti mountain range and is fittingly called the Kingdom in the Sky. Lesotho is famous for its pony trekking and hiking trails, the best ways to explore its scenic mountains. The country is also known for its friendly people and their distinct Basotho culture.

Lesotho Travel Highlights

Pony Trekking in Lesotho

Lesotho is best known for its pony trekking on Basotho ponies, the main reason many travellers visit this scenic part of the world. A local guide accompanies visitors on pony trekking excursions going from village to village or into the picturesque mountains of Lesotho.

The Welcoming Basotho People

Encountering the warm and open Basotho people of Lesotho is one of the highlights of visiting this peaceful country. Traditionally the Basotho people wear straw hats and brightly coloured blankets to keep warm at such high altitudes. The Basotho men typically wear gumboots, many of them having worked as migrant mine labourers in South Africa. The people of Lesotho are predominantly rural and the unique Basotho culture is centred on the family unit and village. Traditional culture remains vibrant in the Basotho communities of this proud nation.

The Hiking Trails of Lesotho

A hiker’s paradise, Lesotho has an abundance of hiking trails and scenic walking paths to choose from. Hiking can be done with a local guide or you can explore the mountains independently. Hiking also offers excellent bird watching opportunities in Lesotho, known for its large raptor population, including the rare Bearded Vulture, the Steppe Buzzard, the Cape Vulture and the Black Eagle.

Lesotho Crafts Markets

The lively crafts markets of Lesotho are well worth a visit as Lesotho boasts a strong tradition in arts and crafts. Basotho women typically make hand-woven tapestries and carpets out of wool and mohair, along with a range of grass-woven products. The grass and reed woven items include baskets, brooms, floor mats and traditional Basotho hats, called mokorotlo, as well as beer strainers, to produce the local beer called joala. Other crafts include jewellery making and pottery and Lesotho is also known for its sheepskin clothing and leather products.
