Why Travel to Masai Mara? by

One of Africa's premier national parks, the Masai Mara in Kenya is arguably the most famous African safari destination.

The world-renowned Masai Mara National Reserve is Kenya's flagship national park. With sweeping plains that seem to stretch to the end of the world, abundant wildlife - including the Big 5 - and the breathtaking annual Great Migration, the Masai Mara is a dream safari destination.

  • Size of Masai Mara National Reserve: 583 mi² (1510 km²)
  • Location: southwest Kenya, along the border with Tanzania
  • Terrain: wide-open savannahs, low hills, and fertile riverine woodlands
  • Ecosystem: forms a continuation of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania
  • Wildlife: Big 5, prolific birdlife, abundant wildlife year-round, the Great Migration, and predators (especially lions and cheetahs)
  • Cultural Highlights: the traditional Maasai tribe of Kenya
  • Scenery: stunning open landscapes and unforgettable sunsets

Masai Mara Wildlife

The Masai Mara is teeming with wildlife such as wildebeest, giraffes, baboons, warthogs, bat-eared foxes, grey jackals, spotted hyenas, topis, impalas, and hartebeest. This Kenya national park is also home to numerous elephants, buffaloes, zebras, and hippos.

Masai Mara hosts thousands of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle, which embark on the phenomenal annual migration, known as the Great Migration. These herbivores migrate north from the Serengeti in about July and return again in about November, crossing the Mara River in search of water and fresh grazing.

This dramatic spectacle is one of the most impressive natural phenomena on earth, especially watching the herbivores plunge into the Mara River where crocodiles and hippos lie waiting. The high concentration of grazers, in turn, attracts impressive numbers of predators. Lions are commonly sighted in Masai Mara with cheetahs and leopards being harder to spot but still reasonably common.

The Masai Mara Park is also renowned for superb sightings of Africa’s Big Five - lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo. The Masai Mara National Reserve is also rich in birdlife, including migrants, with over 450 species recorded, of which 57 species are birds of prey.

The seasonally well-watered plains of the Masai Mara and Serengeti offer a generous ecosystem in which some of the largest populations of many animals live: hundreds of thousands of zebra, over a million wildebeest, a quarter of a million Thomson's gazelle, to name just three.

Add to this elephant, giraffe, hippos, lions, leopards, crocodiles, and many more, with an enormous array of birds, and you're in safari heaven.

While many of the herds are seasonally seen according to their migratory routes, most of them have permanent populations in the park, too.

The Big 5

Known in the 'olden days' as the five most sought-after animals to hunt, these five are now - thank goodness - sought for shooting of a different kind: the kind that involves just a camera.

Masai Mara has healthy populations of all five - lion, elephant, Cape Buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros. It is not unheard of to manage to spot all five on a good day out in the park.

Mammals

All of the favorites call the Masai Mara home. Zebra, giraffe, and over fourteen species of antelope graze on Mara's plains amongst warthog, hyenas, mongoose, monkeys and elephants.

Around the rivers, crocodiles lie in wait for prey while hippos grunt in the water and birds twitter in the trees.

Cats

Besides the regal lion, Masai Mara has leopard, cheetah, and the smaller African Wild Cat, caracal, and serval cats.

A sighting of one of these predators in their natural habitat is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Birds

With over 450 species of bird in the Masai Mara, this is a birdwatcher's paradise.

From tiny, brightly-colored sunbirds to lanky ostriches and 57 species of raptor, you'll definitely not want to leave your binoculars at home!

The Li'l Guys

Over and above all the big game, the Park is crawling (literally) with fascinating insects like the dung beetle, reptiles like lizards and slithering snakes and the ever-so-slow, but very beautiful, tortoise.

A guided walking safari is highly recommended to allow you to see these wonderful creatures up close and get a real African experience.

The Maasai Tribe of Masai Mara

Masai Mara is the traditional home of the semi-nomadic Maasai people, whose culture and way of life have remained relatively intact for hundreds of years.

Visiting the Masai Mara reserve is more than a wildlife experience as it offers insight into the culture of the native Maasai communities of Kenya.
