Why Travel to Namibia? by

Deserts, Wildlife & African Culture

Namibia is a land of vast desert landscapes and wide-open spaces, as well as being home to an abundance of wildlife and rich cultural heritage. This large desert country covers about 825 419 km² (318 696 sq mi), but only has a population of around 2,5 million people! This makes Namibia the second least densely populated country in the world!

Easy & Safe African Safari Destination

Namibia is a popular African travel destination because it is safe and politically stable. It also has excellent infrastructure and is economically prosperous. Like Botswana, Namibia’s successful neighbor, tourism and the diamond industry are the mainstays of the country’s economy. Namibia is a great choice for first-time safari-goers, being dubbed as "Africa for beginners".

Namibia is ideal for families, older visitors and solo travelers.

Namibia safaris have something to offer everyone. It is a particularly rewarding African travel destination for photographers, wildlife enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

Top Namibia Destinations

Some of Namibia’s major attractions are its stunning desert landscapes and tall, red-orange sand dunes, as well as superb game viewing in Etosha National Park. Namibia consists of contrasting landscapes, from its striking deserts and rugged mountains to the wild Atlantic coastline and unspoiled central plateau.

Etosha National Park – Namibia’s Premier Game Reserve

Etosha National Park, Namibia's most famous game reserve, is home to an abundance of wildlife. Four of Africa's Big Five safari animals are found in Etosha - lion, rhino, elephant and leopard. It is one of the world’s largest game parks covering about 20 000 sq km of salt pans, grasslands, savannah, and woodlands in Northern Namibia. The park is named after the vast Etosha Pan that it surrounds. An apt name as Etosha means ‘Great White Place of Dry Water’ in the local Ovambo language. The vast open plains of this dried lake are a shimmering white-to-green spectacle that makes for excellent photographic opportunities. See our Budget Etosha Safaris.

The Namib Desert – Namib-Naukluft Park, Sossusvlei & Sesriem Canyon

The Namib-Naukluft Park protects 50 000 sq km of Namib Desert and the Naukluft Mountains and is also home to some of the most peculiar and rare animals and plant species. This part of the world is renowned for its wide-open spaces and ever-shifting red-orange sand dunes. The Namib Desert is a place where solitude and stillness can be fully appreciated in its vast and unusual landscapes. The Namib-Naukluft Park is one of Africa’s largest game parks, consisting of four areas - Sossusvlei, Sesriem, Naukluft and the Namib section. A visit to the world's tallest sand dune in Sossusvlei is a must-do activity. Other Namibia Travel Highlights

  • The Kalahari Desert & Quiver Tree Forest
  • Damaraland, Spitzkoppe & Brandberg Mountain
  • Swakopmund, Skeleton Coast & Cape Cross Seal Colony
  • Capri Strip, Bwabwata National Park & Kavango River
  • Fish River Canyon, Kolmanskop & Lüderitz
  • Waterberg Plateau Park, Hoba Meteorite and Cheetah Conservation Fund

The cultural diversity of Namibia is a definite drawcard for tourists visiting this stunning desert nation. The main ethnic group in Namibia is made up of the Ovambo People, with significant numbers of Herero and Himba people as well as a population of European descendants. Afrikaans and German are among the languages spoken in Namibia, where the colonial German influence of the past can still be seen, particularly in Windhoek. See our tours departing from Windhoek.
