As Namibia's top tourist attraction there are a number of ways to experience Sossusvlei and the Namib. We offer 40 to 50 different safaris that visit Sossusvlei - from Exclusive and Overland Safaris to Lodge and Camping Tours. Although Sossusvlei is not a wildlife destination per se, there are plenty of safaris that combine the Namib with outstanding game viewing destinations, such as Etosha Park in Namibia.
The array of tour styles and accommodation choices for Sossusvlei range from ultra luxurious to bare-bones budget options. The good news is that Namibia boasts high standards in tourism services and facilities, so even a shoestring budget gets travellers excellent value-for-money at good quality accommodation on well-run tours.
Given the well-maintained infrastructure (passable roads, professional medical care, and relatively reliable availability of fuel and supplies) and the political stability (safe and predictable conditions) - Sossusvlei, the Namib Desert and most places in Namibia can quite easily be visited on self-drive safaris as well. Some remote spots, however, call for 4WD transport and more travel experience.
A quick desert tour is one of your most affordable options - exploring the Namib Desert (including Sossusvlei) exclusively, over as few as three days! These trips come in the Lodge and Camping Tour varieties on the low budget end of the spectrum, and usually start and end in Swakopmund or Windhoek.
The next step up is a slightly longer tour (a week or so) that also visits other highlights in Namibia - Etosha National Park mostly. These also start and end in Windhoek and/or Swakopmund, but add a game viewing dimension to your trip, which can be of the Exclusive or Accommodated Overland Safari, Budget Camping or Lodge Safari styles.
The best budget options for visiting Sossusvlei, as well as other top safari destinations, commonly combine the Namib with highlights in neighbouring South Africa and Botswana. Top South African destinations that are most often paired with Namibia's deserts on a reasonable budget, include Cape Town and attractions in the Western and Northern Cape regions. Crossing into Botswana the most popular attractions coupled with Sossusvlei are the Okavango Delta and/or Chobe National Park, often topped off with Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe or Zambia).
With the broader Southern African Safaris the selection of tour types also expands - here you're looking at Overland Camping Tours too, as well as Exclusive Budget (small groups) Tours and Forty Plus (mature travellers) Trips. Duration varies (roughly two to three weeks) as does the mode of transport (from minivan to overland truck) and group size (16 plus or minus), so you can choose according to your needs, budget and tastes.
Of course, there are also a host of epic safaris that sweep through Southern and East Africa over as long as 47 days! Here you would be taking more time and money (well spent) to experience wider parts of Africa, incorporating destinations from Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa through to Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe and more in Southern Africa.
