The best way to explore Cape Point: a Cycling Day Tour!

This Cape Point cycling tour is definitely one of the best cycling day tours in Cape Town! And, there was more to the day trip than cycling, as if the cycle wasn't awesome enough!

Scenic Atlantic Seaboard Drive 

It's a fresh Saturday morning (9:00 am) and the day trip has just begun. Kicking off with collection from accommodation across Cape Town (from Observatory to Gardens to Green Point) a group of 16 daytrippers from across the globe heads out along the Atlantic Seaboard on the west coast of the Cape Peninsula.

As we pass the trendy Clifton beaches and vibey Camps Bay our guide begins his commentary, sharing funny nuggets and little-known facts about the sights whooshing by. We travel along the scenic Atlantic coastline, a stunning drive along rocky beaches and steep cliffs. Passing by the seaside hamlet of Llandudno flanked by Baby Lion's Head (the smaller version of Lion's Head overlooking Cape Town city), our guide points out the old shipwreck off Llandudno point, a popular scuba diving site.

Hout Bay & Seal Island Boat Trip to Chapman's Peak

Our first stop is the scenic seaside suburb of Hout Bay, on the Southern Atlantic Ocean.

We get off at the harbour where the Seal Island boat trip starts and ends. Here daytrippers have the option of embarking on the reasonably priced Seal Island Trip as an optional extra (own account). Located in False Bay, Seal Island is named after the huge colony of Cape Fur Seals found on this small island, which is also a hunting ground for Great White Sharks that prey on seals.

Alternatively, you can wander around the quaint harbour, browse the curio stalls and go for coffee. Leaving the harbour we drive along Chapman's Peak - one of the most scenic coastal roads in South Africa, if not the world. We stop at one of the cliff-side viewpoints looking out over Hout Bay, False Bay and the Ocean to take photos and soak up the panoramic views.

From Chapman's Peak Drive we dip down to the rural suburb of Noordhoek with its long sandy beach and continue to Simon's Town on the west coast of the Cape Peninsula.

Boulders Beach & the Jackass Penguins

Our next stop is Boulders Beach in Table Mountain National Park.

We head down to the viewing decks along the pristine beaches to get a close look at the African Penguin Colony, numbering over 2000 penguins. This unique land-based colony of endangered penguins, also known as Jackass Penguins, is one of few in the world making Boulders Bay a world-famous destination.

Cycling Tour in Cape Point - Table Mountain National Park

Then it's time for our bike ride in the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, part of Table Mountain National Park.

We hop on the road bikes that we've been pulling along on a giant trailer and explore the diverse Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve the best way - by bike.

It's a chilly day and the fresh sea air whips us awake after our comfortable drive, as we follow the tarred road on an easy ride through gentle hills. The cycle is easy enough for riders of moderate fitness and you can cycle at a leisurely pace, keeping an eye out for baboons, zebra, eland and other antelopes, as well as some of the over 250 bird species found here.

After working up a lively appetite on the 6 km cycle we tuck into a tasty picnic lunch prepared by our efficient guide at the visitors' centre. The fresh lunch, a colourful and inviting mix of flavours, is accompanied by fruit juice and followed by biscuits.

Energy levels topped up after lunch, we jump back on our bikes and cycle a further 7 km's through the endemic fynbos of the untamed Cape Point reserve. The next leg of our bike ride takes us up a steady incline (still manageable) and down along the coastline, along an even more scenic and exciting route with stunning views over the rough seas. As we cycle the skies get stormier and the rain threatens to drench us, but the grey skies hold until the very end of our bike trip. Arriving at the Cape of Good Hope, the most south-western point of Africa, we switch from cycling to walking and capture this viewpoint on camera.

Leaving our wheels behind we hike to the top of the cliffs at Cape Point for breathtaking stormy views buffed by a chilly breeze! Walking further along the cliffs we cross the Cape of Good Hope, via the picturesque Dias beach. We pause on the other tip of this narrow finger of land to admire the stunning views over the Atlantic, hike up to the lighthouse or enjoy a warm cup of coffee in the restaurant as the rain starts falling.

At about 4:00 pm we get back on the road, making our way back to Cape Town via Kommetjie, the final scenic drive for the day. All-in-all an absolutely delightful day filled with incredible scenery, fresh sea air and good company!
