Explore scenic Southern Malawi on this week-long budget lodge safari, visiting travel highlights of the Warm Heart of Africa.
Safari highlights on this Budget Malawi Tour include:
An affordable African Lodge Safari through the beautiful and friendly land of Malawi.
Our Southern Malawi Budget Lodge Safari sets off from Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi.
We travel south, stopping in Dedza in central Malawi for last minute supplies. Dedza is a scenically located town with a relatively cool climate, as the highest town in Malawi, lying at an altitude of 1590 meters above sea level.
Next we pass through Blantyre, Malawi's second largest city and the commercial capital of the country. We continue making our way south, driving down into the lower Shire Valley, an extension of the Great Rift Valley.
Reaching the lowlands of the Shire Valley we head towards the Majete Wildlife Reserve.
Today we explore the Majete wilderness area on morning and afternoon game drives and walks.
Majete is a success story of rehabilitation, protecting endangered species and other wild animals that have been reintroduced into the restored wilderness area. This is one of Malawi's most popular game reserves, covering about 700 km² of diverse vegetation.
The Majete Wildlife Reserve is now home to black rhino, elephant, buffalo, Burchell’s zebra and bush pig, as well as a wide variety of antelope species, including waterbuck, bushbuck, eland, hartebeest, sable, nyala and impala.
Leopards and lions have recently been reintroduced to Majete, which is also home to an abundance of crocodiles and hippos. Majete also hosts numerous birds, with around 311 species recorded.
On day three of this Southern Malawi Budget Safari we descend the Thyolo Escarpment enjoying dramatic views en route.
Our next overnight stop is at the Huntingdon House, set on Satemwa tea estate in the scenic Thyolo district. Thyolo is a beautiful region of plantations and estates with distinct British colonial influences.
We spend the afternoon exploring the tea estate, in Africa's first tea growing region.
In the morning we visit the local tea factory in Thyolo before continuing to the small town of Zomba, formerly the capital of Malawi.
Zomba is a friendly town situated at the base of the impressive Zomba Plateau and is home to a large market and numerous colonial-style buildings.
From Zomba we travel to the southern shores of Lake Malawi, making our way to Cape Maclear, via the lively town of Mangochi on the Shire River.
We arrive in Cape Maclear after lunch. Cape Maclear lies inside the Lake Malawi National Park, within the Mangochi District of Malawi.
The islands of Domwe and Thumbwe lie near Cape Maclear with its golden-sand beaches and clear blue waters.
Today is free for you to relax on the idyllic shores of Lake Malawi and explore the scenic area of Cape Maclear. Unwind on tropical beaches, swimming in the warm waters of freshwater Lake Malawi. Explore the nearby village on foot or enjoy water sports such as kayaking, sailing and snorkelling.
All meals and non-motorized water sports are included on day six.
We begin our day with a leisurely full breakfast, taking our time to pack up and admire our lakeside setting. Leaving Cape Maclear we make our way back to Lilongwe, where our Southern Malawi Budget Lodge Safari started.
We look forward to welcoming you back to Malawi, the Warm Heart of Africa!
