Itinerary for this Tour

  • Kalahari San Bushman Experience
  • 4 nights Central Kalahari Game Reserve
  • 1 Overnight at a comfortable lodge in Maun

Day 1: Hainaveld & the Kalahari Bushmen, Botswana - camping

The Botswana Camping Safari starts at 07h30 when you join your safari guide at a prearranged meeting place in Maun.

From Maun we drive south to Hainaveld Game Farm, located on the northern border of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana. Arriving at the game farm we set up our overnight camp in the bush, followed by a safari briefing.

This afternoon we set off on a nature walk with local San Bushman trackers that lead the way. On the guided nature walk you will get a closer look at the African bush and gain some insight into the Bushman's detailed, indigenous knowledge about this harsh natural area. Our cultural encounter with the original inhabitants of this arid region, enables you to experience the ancient ways of these traditional semi-nomadic people. (L, D)

Please note: This Botswana Safari starts at 07h30 on day one; therefore you are required to spend the night before the safari departs in Maun and purchase drinks for your safari the day before the camping safari starts.

  • Day 1: Maun – Hainaveld Game Farm (northern border CKGR): 170km, 4hrs

Days 2 - 5: Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Botswana - camping

On day two we get up at sunrise and venture into the pristine wilderness of the Central Kalahari Reserve, the largest game reserve in Botswana.

We spend the next four days exploring the vast unspoiled wilderness of the northern Kalahari, moving from one wild bush camp to another as we go. On our Kalahari adventure we visit the lovely Passarge Valley and remote Deception Valley.

In the Kalahari Reserve you will feel the vastness of Africa's open spaces, driving through uninterrupted semi-desert landscapes and camping under wide star-studded night skies at bush camps. This tranquil region is largely free of human development and sparsely populated, offering an escape from modern life. Our visit to the Kalahari reveals truly wild Africa as we experience pure adventure camping with limited water and communication with the outside world. We travel from isolated camp to camp as a self-sufficient group, staying in designated campsites with fixed/bush ablutions. (B, L, D)

  • Day 2: Game Farm in Hainaveld - Central Kalahari Game Reserve: 120km, 4 to 5 hrs (including game drive)
  • Days 3 - 5: Extended game drives

Day 6: Maun, Botswana - lodge accommodation

On the last day of our Kalahari & Bushman Botswana Camping Safari we venture back into the Kalahari Game Reserve on a final morning game drive before breaking camp and heading back to Maun. On the last night of this remote African adventure we stay in a comfortable lodge in Maun enjoying dinner at the lodge (own account).

This cultural, scenic and wildlife Botswana Safari to the remote Central Kalahari ends at 08h00 on day seven. (B, L)

  • Deception Valley, Central Kalahari - Maun: 340km, 5 to 6hrs

About the Central Kalahari Game Reserve

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve protects a vast portion of the semi-arid to arid Kalahari Desert that forms the world's largest sand basin.
This remote game park covers 52 800 km² area of central Botswana, making it the second largest game reserve in the world. The Kalahari Reserve is home to a variety of wildlife including giraffe, ostrich hyena, warthog, cheetah, wild dog, leopard, lion and jackal, as well as various antelope species such as wildebeest, eland, gemsbok, kudu and red hartebeest.
The endless plains, dry riverbeds, flat slat pans and gentle hills of this harsh terrain support a wide variety of habitats ranging from acacia trees and woodlands to seemingly endless grasslands.

Please note:

This Botswana Safari starts at 07h30 on day one; therefore you will need to spend the night before the safari departs in Maun and purchase drinks for your safari the day before the camping safari starts.

Tour Transport:

The vehicles used on this Botswana Safari are custom-built game viewing vehicles, designed for safari trips in the African bush. Each safari vehicle carries up to 12 passengers, ensuring excellent visibility on game viewing drives, as well as great movability in the wilderness. Throughout the safari we use a specially designed trailer unit containing a mobile kitchen and space for all of the camping equipment and luggage.

Tour Accommodation:

On this semi-participation safari we camp at remote bush sites in 2.1m x 2.1m x 1.75m bow tents that are easy to set up (clients help to put up the tents). All windows and doors of the tents are fitted with treated mosquito netting. Each person will get a 5cm high-density foam camping mattress to sleep on while camping. The bush ablutions consist of high-slung bucket showers and bush toilets with canvas screens for privacy. Round (200V/2pin) power units are available in the vehicles to recharge cameras and in Maun there are Internet cafes and photo shops that will download digital photos. In Maun we stay in rooms at a comfortable Botswana lodge.
