This short 3-Day Klaserie Treehouse Safari at nThambo Tree Camp begins in Johannesburg or Pretoria, South Africa. On the first morning, our shuttle service can collect you from the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg at 07h00, or from the designated pick-up point in Pretoria at 07h30. From there, your shuttle travels northeast, alongside the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, before descending the Magoebaskloof Mountains and continuing to the Kruger National Park in the Lowveld region of South Africa. At about 13h15 to 13h45, the shuttle arrives at a popular Bush Pub where your guide from nThambo Tree Camp meets you. Your guide takes you inside Klaserie Private Nature Reserve to your tree eco-lodge.
Lunch is served when we arrive at nThambo Tree Camp. Settle in, and then we embark on our first exciting game-viewing adventure. Our game drive takes us in search of the Big 5 animals - lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino - and a plethora of other wildlife species found in Klaserie Game Reserve. After stopping for a sundowner, we make our way back to the tree camp, using a spotlight to search for fascinating nocturnal animals who are just beginning to stir.
On our return to nThambo, there is time to freshen up before drinks and dinner, served in true African safari style. Dine together in a lantern-lit boma around a huge campfire under the stars before retiring to your charming treehouse suite.
As is traditional on African safaris, we are woken just before dawn to make the most of the early hours. After coffee and a light breakfast snack, we set out for our morning game drive in an open-sided safari vehicle.
The spectacular sights and sounds of the African bush awakening have to be seen to be believed. This is the best time for game viewing as the animals are most active at this time of day. Animals are usually found at the waterholes, having an early-morning drink or feeding in the nearby bushes. Your expert guides happily share their knowledge and love of the bush with you. Return to camp around 09h00 for a welcome breakfast.
You may then opt to go out once more on a bush walk with the tree camp's experienced guides and Shangaan trackers. This is a great opportunity to experience the real Africa - the sights, the sounds, the aromas - up close. Your guides are fountains of knowledge and are more than happy to share their insights. The rest of your day before the evening game drive is yours to spend relaxing at camp, reading, enjoying your view from the treetops, taking a dip in the pool, and basking in the sunshine.
A light lunch is served. Then, we depart on another late afternoon to evening game drive in Klaserie Greater Kruger Park. As the sun sets, we stop for sundowners and snacks, and then we go in search of nocturnal creatures with the aid of the vehicle's powerful spotlight. This is the time for spotting leopards, aardvarks, bat-eared foxes, and hyenas.
Due to the limited number of camps in the Klaserie Nature Reserve, you will likely have the game reserve to yourselves without other vehicles crowding your sightings. Off-road driving is permitted in the private reserves, allowing us to get closer to the animals for fantastic photo opportunities. On our return to eco-friendly nThambo Tree Camp, there is time for a drink at the bar before dinner is served at 20h00. After dinner, gather around the campfire once again, before retiring to your comfortable tree-top accommodation.
Day three of our sustainable Greater Kruger Treehouse Safari begins with another early start and a light breakfast snack, before heading out for one last game drive in beautiful Klaserie Private Nature Reserve.
Then it's time to bid farewell to the friendly staff at nThambo Tree Camp, and your safari guide drives you back to the bush pub. Meet up with the shuttle at about 10h45. From there, travel back to your designated drop-off point in Pretoria, arriving at 17h00, and then OR Tambo in Johannesburg, arriving at 18h00. This eco-friendly Klaserie Treehouse Safari stays at nThambo Tree Camp, situated in the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve that forms part of the Greater Kruger Park. nThambo Tree Camp has been designed to ensure minimal impact on the natural environment. There are never more than 10 guests at this intimate, uniquely situated tree camp. The 5 treehouse suites, with en-suite bathrooms, are carefully positioned to maximize privacy for every guest. Imagine a wood, thatch, and canvas chalet, with a private balcony, looking out over a canopy of trees and the African bush below, where wild animals roam. All lighting is solar-powered, and each chalet has a plug point for charging camera batteries.
Meals are served in the main area (all under thatch), and in true safari style, we all dine together. There is also a boma, with a traditional African campfire - a place to enjoy drinks before/after dinner, make friends, discuss the day's sightings and just enjoy the African night under a star-studded sky. This eco camp is lit only by lanterns to give you the true feeling of the African bush. There is a small splash pool in the main camp area for cooling off and relaxing in the African heat.
Staying in Klaserie Private Nature Reserve gives you the exclusive privilege of access to an area only enjoyed by a few. This private game reserve, covering over 60,000 hectares, forms part of the Greater Kruger and shares unfenced boundaries with the Kruger National Park. Animals move freely between the unfenced private game reserves lying alongside the national park. As a result, Greater Kruger hosts an incredible diversity of animals, large and small, including Africa's Big Five - lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo. Other animals you may see include giraffes, zebras, warthogs, a variety of bucks, hyenas, primates, and the nocturnal wild dog, cheetah, civet, and bat-eared fox. There are hundreds of different species of birds, including vultures, eagles, starlings, and shrikes.
An NGO (non-governmental organization) runs the reserve, striving to keep the area pristine. Several projects are run by the reserve to protect the fauna and flora, reduce human impact on the environment and ensure the survival of this precious ecosystem. The Children's Environmental Education Project teaches local children about the importance of protecting their environment for future generations.
