Your 4x4 Ethiopia Trip begins in Addis Ababa, where you'll be met at Bole International Airport.
After transfer to your comfortable 4-star hotel in Ethiopia's capital city, you'll have time to rest and refresh. Time permitting, embark on a guided city tour of Addis Ababa, one of Africa's major diplomatic hubs. Experience the rich cultural heritage of Ethiopia as you visit the Holy Trinity Cathedral and the National Museum, home to the famous hominid fossil remains of Lucy.
Your Danakil Depression tour adventure begins with an early morning flight to Semera, capital of the Afar Region.
From here, our 4x4 expedition traverses one of Africa's most challenging terrains to reach Dodom village at the base of Erta Ale volcano. This 80km journey through the remote Afar Triangle takes approximately 6 hours, crossing the geological wonder of the Great East African Rift Valley – considered by many paleontologists to be the cradle of human evolution.
After dinner in Dodom, we begin our trek to Erta Ale, supported by local camels carrying our camping equipment. This three-hour hike leads to one of the world's most active volcanoes, home to one of the five permanent lava lakes on Earth. As darkness falls, witness the spectacular molten lake illuminating the night sky – a rare phenomenon that few travelers ever experience
Wake up to the otherworldly landscapes of your Ethiopia Trip in the Danakil Depression, with views of the 'smoking mountain' of Erta Ale. This remote volcano, surrounded by ancient lava plains and bizarre rock formations, showcases why the Danakil Depression tour is truly unique.
After breakfast at camp, your 4x4 Ethiopia expedition continues to Lake Afdera. Along the way, encounter the resilient Afar people and witness traditional salt extraction methods at one of the world's largest salt mines. This Ethiopia package includes exploring vast salt flats and experiencing local life in this extreme environment.
Tonight we camp in Afdera, one of Earth's lowest points at 103 meters below sea level, completing another remarkable day of your adventure.
Your Ethiopia Trip continues as we journey south from the Danakil Depression to Awash National Park, situated in the Great Rift Valley beneath the dormant Mount Fentale volcano. This 4x4 Ethiopia Tour showcases the dramatic landscape changes from desert to savanna.
As dusk approaches, we visit Hyena Hill in Awash National Park, home to over 200 hyenas. Witness these fascinating predators emerge from their caves at twilight, sometimes in packs of 50 or more. The experience is made even more memorable by the haunting calls of the hyenas and the occasional sight of warthogs sharing their cave dwellings.
Today's Ethiopia Trip explores Awash National Park, Ethiopia's oldest game reserve. This part of your 4x4 Ethiopia Tour takes you through diverse landscapes—from grassy plains to river gorges—searching for the park's remarkable wildlife.
