Our 8-Day Mozambique Beaches Tour starts in Mozambique’s vibrant capital city, Maputo, where you meet up with your guide and fellow travelers. From Maputo, we head north following the Indian Ocean coastline through the coconut, cashew, and sugar cane plantations of rural Mozambique. Along the way, you can see locals going about their lives in small villages and selling nuts and fruits. Enjoy the scenery of open countryside where livestock roams.
Our first overnight stop is the beautiful beach at the seaside village of Chidenguele. Our lodge faces the ocean and after you have settled in, take a long stroll and a dip in the balmy ocean.
Day 2 of our beach overland tour continues north to our next Mozambique beach stopover - the coastal town of Vilanculos. The lively seaside town of Vilanculos is ideally located for exploring the three main islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago (Bazaruto, Benguerra, and Magaruque), lying just off the mainland of Mozambique. The Bazaruto Archipelago is Mozambique’s premier travel destination - a tropical beach paradise with clear turquoise waters and palm-fringed islands. As a protected area, the reefs are pristine and the sea life here is spectacular.
We stay at a comfortable Vilanculos lodge with a swimming pool, bar, shop, and laundry facilities.
Today our Mozambique Tour includes a day trip to the dazzling Bazaruto Archipelago, known as The Pearl of the Indian Ocean. Early this morning we set sail for idyllic Magaruque Island on a traditional dhow wooden sailing boat. Dhows are an integral part of the maritime history of the Swahili coast of East Africa, and continue to be used today, both for fishing and tourism. Their distinctive silhouette set against the turquoise ocean is an iconic image of this coastline.
Once we reach Magaruque Island, you have the chance to explore on foot, lie on the idyllic beaches and go snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters admiring the colorful reefs. Marine life includes an incredible variety of colorful tropical fish, whales, and dolphins, as well as the rare Dugong (sea cow).
We enjoy a picnic lunch as we soak in the sunshine before making the return journey back to Vilanculos sun kissed and invigorated by our day on the islands.
Day 4 of our Mozambique Beaches Tour sees us head south once more, following the East Coast of Africa to our seaside resort at Barra beach (Praia da Barra), near the historic town of Inhambane steeped in old colonial charm. This will be our base for three nights. Settle in and take a stroll on the palm-fringed beach and take a dip in the Indian Ocean.
The next two days of our Mozambique Tour are free for you to enjoy laid-back hours on the picturesque beaches, soaking up the sun, swimming and exploring. There are also many optional activities on offer, watersports and land-based adventure activities from scuba diving and snorkeling to horse riding and quad biking.
On Day 6 your overland vehicle drives to the nearby seaside town of Praia do Tofo (Tofinho), where you can browse the vibrant curio and food market, walk in the village, or lounge on the beach. Once a sleepy fishing village, today Tofo Mozambique is a popular beach destination considered the scuba diving capital of the country, and one of the best places in the world to see whale sharks. Snorkeling with whale sharks and manta rays, on an Ocean Safari (own account) in Tofo is a not-to-be-missed highlight, so take the dive!
Enjoy one last sunrise over the beach this morning, before we travel back to the country’s largest city, Maputo. Capital city of Mozambique, Maputo is known for its colonial architecture with Art Deco and Bauhaus influences. The bustling city boasts colorful markets, a vibrant nightlife and superb seafood.
After breakfast, our sun-splashed Mozambique Beaches Tour comes to an end.
We recommend arriving the day before your overland safari departs and only booking flights for the day after the tour ends. We can help arrange accommodation for before and after this Mozambique Vacation on request.
This Lodge Overland Tour is also available as a Camping Overland Tour which follows the same itinerary and accommodation is budget friendly camping instead of lodges.
