Why Travel To Maputo?

Maputo is the most popular entry and exit point for tours to Mozambique. When travelling to the famous beaches of Mozambique's beautiful and marine-rich coastline, most travellers fly via Maputo. When visiting two of the most popular beach destinations, Tofo in the Inhambane area and Bazaruto Islands off the coast at Vilankulo, travellers fly into and out of Maputo. From Maputo there are domestic flights to the major beach destinations, including the otherwise hard to reach village of Pemba and the Quirimba Archipelago in the remote north. Luxury tour packages sometimes fly directly to the beach spots, but the flights are expensive.

Train and bus routes, from neighbouring countries, such as South Africa, also start and end in the capital. Hiring a car to explore Mozambique is also an option and is most commonly done in Maputo. Self-drive travel is, however, challenging as it involves many obstacles - hours behind the wheel dodging livestock, speeding traps, corrupt officials, pedestrians and potholes.

Tours to Maputo

We offer Overland Safaris to Mozambique, which travel via Maputo. You can choose from Accommodated Overland, Camping Overland and Exclusive Overland Tours, as well as Budget Lodge Safaris.

Tours combining Kruger National Park and the beaches of Mozambique are the most popular, offering a winning African bush and beach experience. Our tours that stop in Maputo travel to the renowned Bazaruto Islands and other highlights of Mozambique, usually in combination with South African destinations, including Kruger National Park. Another great safari route takes in Swaziland, visiting Hlane Royal National Park, in conjunction with gems on the Natal coastline and the prestigious Hluhluwe Game Reserve.

Maputo as a Travel Destination

Maputo is not considered a travel destination in itself, although it is well worth a visit. As a microcosm of the country the city offers a unique and vibrant window into Mozambican culture, politics, economics and life.

It is worth spending a few days in Maputo, exploring the architecture, cuisine and other highlights and getting a taste of the nightlife and cultural scene.
