This 4-day safari in the exclusive Klaserie area of the Greater Kruger National Park offers the best of the spectacular African bush and amazing wildlife.
Staying at an environmentally-concious Eco Camp, you can be assured of making as little impact on this incredible environment as is possible.
With early morning, late afternoon and evening game drives, you are sure to be entranced by the huge range of bird- and wildlife - including the Big Five - that this area has to offer.
Add in the option of walking safaris and you'll get to experience everything the African bush has to offer - sights, sounds and smells. You can't get closer to nature than this.
We arrive at Hoedspruit, after being collected from O. R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, or the Centurion Gautrain Station. Then we are transferred to our Eco Tree Camp, where we are served a late lunch.
Then it is time for the first of our game drives. We leave in open sided safari vehicles to explore the Klaserie Nature Reserve, which is part of the Greater Kruger National Park. This unfenced area covers over 20 000sq km allowing the animals to wander freely, which accounts for the great diversity of wildlife.
Our game viewing continues into the early evening, as we search for nocturnal animals with the aid of a huge spotlight on our safari vehicle.
We return to camp around 19h00 and freshen up before gathering at the bar for a pre dinner drink. Dinner is served in traditional safari style in a lamplit boma, around a campfire with our fellow guests, under spectacular starry African skies.
Our exclusive Eco Camp is designed to have little impact on the environment. We can safely experience the wonder of the African bush at this camp, knowing that we are not upsetting nature's delicate balance.
Our wood, canvas and thatch 'treehouses' are built on stilts with balconies, that offer views over vast plains where animals wander.
Each of the 5 chalets has an en-suite bathroom and is positioned to ensure privacy for our guests, who never number more than 10. If we want company there is an open, thatch roofed lounge, where we can meet fellow guests and share our experiences. Should the heat become unbearable, there is a splash pool for cooling down.
The intimacy of the camp and the warm hospitality make for a very pleasant stay.
Although the next two days follow the same routine, the events of the day will be completely different. Each safari adventure is a unique experience with the potential for so much excitement!
Because there is a limited number of camps in Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, there is a limited number of guests, which creates the feeling of having the reserve to ourselves, as it's unlikely we would meet any other guests whilst on safari.
Game drives always start early to take advantage of the cool of the day, when the animals are their most active. By the time the sun has reached its zenith, the animals are taking refuge from the unrelenting heat in some shady spot and having a siesta.
Our early wake up is eased with coffee and a light breakfast before our adventure begins. The sights and sounds of Africa waking up are spectacular.
The animals have become accustomed to the safari vehicles, consequently they don't see them as a threat, which allows us to drive within 5 to 10 metres of them. We return to camp around 09h00 for a welcome delicious brunch. Afterwards the morning is ours to relax or enjoy an optional bush walk.
There is an intimacy in a bush walk, for surely there is no other way to get closer to nature. Our experienced, armed guides and trackers are there to ensure our safety, as well as to teach us the secrets of the bush.
We will learn how to react should we have too close an encounter with an animal in the wild, we will learn the secrets of tracking, the complexities of termite mounds and many other interesting facts. The silence is all encompassing meaning we will experience the sounds of Africa, as well as the sights and aromas.
Each day, after a late lunch, we will embark on a late afternoon game drive. We will stop to watch the sunset and for a sundowner and snacks before going in search of the nocturnal animals. Returning to camp between 19h00 and 20h00, we can enjoy a drink at the bar before dinner at 20h00. After dinner, tea, coffee and drinks are served around the campfire, below the spectacular African night sky.
Our camp is situated in the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, an unfenced area of over 60 000 hectares. This vast space hosts a variety of habitats resulting in an incredible diversity of animals roaming freely.
The pride of lions living in Klaserie has been followed for years and other resident big cats include leopard and cheetahs. The Big Five co habit with giraffe, zebra, warthog, hyena, various buck and primates. Nocturnal creatures include wild dog, cheetah, bat-eared fox and civet.
Birdlife in the area is prolific, and you're sure to see hundreds of different species, including vultures, eagles, starlings and shrikes.
Run by an NGO (non-governmental organisation) the aim is to maintain the Reserve in a pristine condition by minimising the human footprint. The management is involved in conservation efforts in particular with regard to Rhino protection, an elephant project and a Ground Hornbill project. In 2004 a project was initiated to educate the children of employees of the reserve on the beautiful environment they live in. The aim being to create an awareness of the importance of conservation in order for the children to take ownership of the Reserve and build a platform for future generations.
This project, The Children's Environmental Education Project, has expanded into a charitable foundation to offer local children quality basic education.
We have time for one last morning game drive today, so after a light breakfast we head into the bush. Then we return to our rendezvous point for our return transfer to Johannesburg, arriving at the set drop-off points or O.R. Tambo International Airport between 18:00 and 19:00.
