At the start of this 4-Day Klaserie Treehouse Safari at nThambo Tree Camp, our shuttle service collects you from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg at 07h00 before proceeding north to the designated pick-up point in Pretoria to collect any additional guests joining here, at 07h30. From Pretoria, the shuttle heads northeast. We drive alongside the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, then descend the Magoebaskloof Mountains and continue to the Kruger National Park in the Lowveld region of South Africa. At about 13h15 to 13h45, the shuttle arrives at a popular Bush Pub & Inn close to meet up with your guide from nThambo Tree Camp. From here you are transferred to the eco-friendly nThambo Tree Camp inside the private Klaserie Game Reserve of the Greater Kruger.
After settling in at the eco-camp, lunch is served, and later we embark on our first game drive in Klaserie Private Nature Reserve. Stop at a scenic spot for sundowners, and then our game drive continues into the early evening when we search for nocturnal animals with the aid of a huge spotlight fitted to our safari vehicle.
Our rewarding game drive in Greater Kruger is followed by drinks and dinner back at nThambo Tree Camp. Dinner is served in traditional safari style in the lamplit boma (outdoor area), around a campfire with our fellow guests. Spend a relaxed evening under the stars before retiring to your comfortable treetop suite.
The next two days of our sustainable Greater Kruger Treehouse Safari follow the time-honoured safari routine. Rise early, before dawn, to make the most of the early morning hours when the animals are most active. Our early wake-up is eased with coffee and a light breakfast before our game-viewing adventure begins. Head out into Klaserie Private Reserve on the 4x4 safari vehicles as your expert guides go in search of tracks, seeking out the incredible animals and birds of the Greater Kruger. Your guides are delighted to share their in-depth knowledge of the African bush.
The number of camps in Klaserie Private Nature Reserve are limited to ensure that game-viewing is kept exclusive and uncrowded - you get the feeling of having the game reserve all to yourself. After an exhillirating adventure, return to the tree camp around 09h00 for a delicious brunch. After that, the day is yours to relax in your treehouse suite or take a dip in the pool. You may also opt to go for a guided bush walk, getting you up closer to nature. nThambo's experienced, armed guides and trackers are there to ensure your safety, as well as share the smaller details of the African bush. Learn the secrets of tracking wildlife, the complexities of termite mounds, and many other interesting facts. You will also be briefed on how to react should you encounter a large animal in the wild.
Enjoy a quiet day and a lunch, before we embark on a late afternoon game drive one more, in search of the wildlife that may have eluded us so far. Along the way, stop to watch the sunset and enjoy sundowner drinks and snacks, before going on in search of the nocturnal animals that are beginning to stir. Returning to camp between 19h00 and 20h00, enjoy a drink at the bar before dinner at 20h00. After dinner, make your way to the campfire where tea, coffee, and drinks are served under spectacular African night skies.
We have time for one last morning game drive on day four of our excellent value Greater Kruger Treehouse Safari. First, Enjoy a light breakfast snack, then head back out into Klaserie Private Nature Reserve. Your guide goes in search of any wildlife species that you may have missed thus far. Return to camp for breakfast before bidding the friendly nThambo Tree Camp staff farewell. Your guide takes you back to the rendezvous point at the bush pub. Here, the shuttle collects you at about 10h45 and drives you back to the designated drop-off point in Pretoria at 17h00, and then OR Tambo in Johannesburg, arriving at 18h00. Here, your eco-friendly 4-Day Klaserie Treehouse Safari at nThambo Tree Camp comes to a close.
Beautiful nThambo Tree Camp is situated within the private Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, forming part of the Greater Kruger Park. The reserve offers a more exclusive safari experience without the crowds in the public national park. This eco safari camp is designed and run to have minimal impact on the natural environment, so you can safely experience the wonders of the African bush without upsetting nature's delicate balance.
nThambo Tree Camp is intimate, with only five tented chalets. These wood, canvas, and thatch 'treehouses' are built on stilts with private balconies that offer views into the tree canopy and over the African bush where wild animals roam freely. Each chalet has an en-suite bathroom and is positioned to ensure privacy for guests, who never number more than 10. In the communal area is an open, thatch-roofed lounge, and there is a splash pool for cooling down. All lighting is provided by solar power, to ensure minimal impact on the environment, and each chalet has a plug point for charging camera batteries.
Dinner is served in the main thatched area. There is also an outdoor boma, with a traditional safari campfire - a place to enjoy drinks before/after dinner, make friends, discuss the day's sightings and just enjoy the African night. The camp is lit only by lanterns to give you an authentic African safari feeling. The intimacy and the warm hospitality of this treehouse eco-camp make for a memorable safari in South Africa.
nThambo Tree Camp is situated in the Klaserie Private Game Reserve, with over 60,000 hectares of pristine wilderness hosting a variety of habitats and an incredible diversity of animals. The pride of lions living in Klaserie has been studied for years, and other resident big cats include leopards and cheetahs. The Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo, and elephant) cohabit with giraffe, zebra, warthog, hyena, various buck, and primates. Nocturnal creatures include wild dogs, cheetahs, bat-eared foxes, and civet cats. This reserve forms part of Greater Kruger, a massive wildlife area incorporating the Kruger National Park and the surrounding private game reserves sharing unfenced boundaries to allow wildlife to roam free over the vast Greater Kruger region. Birdlife in Greater Kruger Park is also prolific, and you're sure to see hundreds of different species, including vultures, eagles, starlings, and shrikes.
Run by an NGO (non-governmental organization), the aim is to maintain the land in a pristine condition by minimizing the human footprint. Conservation efforts include Rhino protection, an elephant project, and a Ground Hornbill project. In 2004, a project was initiated to educate the children of employees to become stewards of this precious ecosystem. The Children's Environmental Education Project has since expanded into a charitable foundation to offer local children quality basic education.
