Itinerary for this Tour

Day 1: Nairobi - Kenya

On day one we collect you from the airport in Nairobi and transfer you to your first overnight hotel in this bustling East African city.

You spend the first night in Kenya's capital city, Nairobi, before setting off on the 10-day Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru & Mombasa Beach Tour the following morning.

Day 2: Masai Mara National Reserve - Kenya

In the morning we leave Nairobi and travel southwest to the famous Masai Mara National Reserve.

Our journey to Masai Mara takes us via the scenic Great Rift Valley in Kenya. Along the way, we stop to admire the breathtaking views, before climbing the western side of the Rift Valley. Then we traverse the Loita Plains entering Maasai territory, where we pass Maasai warriors in bright red robes, tending their livestock along the road.

We look out for wildlife as we drive to our overnight lodge in a private conservancy near Masai Mara, arriving in time for lunch.

After lunch, we venture into this beautiful Kenyan game park on an afternoon game drive. We explore Masa Mara searching for the abundant wildlife found here, including Africa's Big Five animals - lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino. Returning to the tented camp close to Masai Mara National Reserve we have dinner and relax in nature. Wildlife is often spotted from the camp, which is set on the banks of a river in the conservancy.

Day 3 & 4: Masai Mara Safari - Kenya

The next two days are spent game viewing in Kenya's leading game park, the Masai Mara National Reserve.

Our morning and afternoon game drives take us in search of Africa's Big Five and the wide array of other wildlife inhabiting this vast Kenyan game reserve. On clear days, the Mara offers fantastic orange-tinged sunsets that make for spectacular photos.

The Mara Game Reserve covers 1510km² of incredible wide-open landscapes and fertile riverine woodlands, following the looping meanders of the Mara and Talek rivers in southwest Kenya. One glimpse is enough to explain its appeal; it is the quintessential open African savannah, hosting a mass of wildlife.

Wherever you go in the vast Masai Mara Park you will see plenty of wildlife, such as Masai giraffe, baboons, warthogs, bat-eared foxes, grey jackals, spotted hyena, topis, impala, hartebeests, wildebeest. Elephants, buffalos, zebras and hippos are also found in great numbers. It is also common to see lions either basking after a heavy meal, or surveying the plains for their next meal. Cheetahs and leopards are harder to spot, but reasonably common.

The ultimate action here is without a doubt the annual wildebeest exodus, the Great Migration, in July and August when millions of these grazers move north from the Serengeti in search of lusher grass before turning south again in October. The Great Migration of hooved animals, in turn, attracts Africa's predators, such as lion, hyena and cheetah, among others.

Hot-air balloon trips are an entirely outstanding way of seeing the savannah plains teeming with wildlife. These Masai Mara balloon trips can be arranged at extra cost.

We overnight at the same tented safari camp close to Masai Mara, on both nights.

Day 5: Maasai Mara to Lake Nakuru National Park - Kenya

Day five starts with breakfast at the tented lodge in a private conservancy, before continuing our journey through Kenya. From the Masai Mara Conservancy, we drive north to Lake Nakuru National Park, arriving at our guest house in time for lunch. After lunch, we head into the bush on an afternoon game drive in Lake Nakuru Park, in search of its diverse wildlife and numerous birds. This Kenyan game park has retained its reputation as an ornithologist's delight, with more than 400 species of bird found here. Bird species include the Great White Pelican, African Spoonbill, Yellow-billed Stork, Lesser and Greater Flamingo, and Long-crested Eagle.

The Lake Nakuru National Park, in Kenya, is known as an important wildlife sanctuary for some of Africa's endangered species, especially black and white rhinos, and Rothschild Giraffes. The game reserve is also home to lions, waterbuck, buffaloes, leopards and baboons, which we keep an eye out for on our game drive.

We have dinner and overnight in en-suite rooms at a comfortable lodge near Lake Nakuru. The lodge features a bar and restaurant and offers free WiFi, as well as in-room tea and coffee facilities, DSTV, complimentary bottled water and toiletries.

Day 6: Lake Nakuru to Mombasa - Kenya

Embark on an early morning game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park, before breakfast. After breakfast at the lodge, we return to Nairobi, making our way to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. We arrive at the airport at about 14:00 and catch a flight to Mombasa (extra cost).

We meet up with you at the airport in Mombasa and transfer you to a beach hotel, for the next leg of our Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru & Mombasa Beach Tour.

Day 7 - 9: Mombasa - Kenya

We spend the next three days enjoying the sunshine and the warm Indian Ocean at a beach resort near Mombasa, on the coast of East Africa. Mombasa is the second biggest city in Kenya and boasts the largest port on the East African coastline.

Relax on the sandy beaches and take a dip in the sea, taking it easy after our action-packed game viewing in Kenya's finest wildlife areas. You can also enjoy optional (extra cost) activities and water sports in and around Mombasa, a chaotic melting pot of Indian, Arabic and African influences.

Day 10: Mombasa to Nairobi - Kenya

On the final day of this Kenya Wildlife and Mombasa Beach Holiday, you are transferred to the airport for your flight back to Nairobi, arriving in time for your onward flights.

Kenya Safari Transport

This safari will be conducted in a custom-made 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof for game viewing. The 4x4 Land Cruisers are adapted for game viewing and fitted with refrigerators to keep your drinks cold out in the bush.

The maximum group size on this Kenya Safari is six people, to guarantee each person a window seat on game drives.

Wildebeest Great Migration Explained

Please note that the Wildebeest Great Migration is seasonal. As a natural wildlife phenomenon, it is fluid and unpredictable. For this reason, seeing the Great Migration cannot be guaranteed.

The wildebeest and other wild herbivores migrate between Masai Mara in Kenya and Serengeti in Tanzania. These herds move in a massive circular route covering some 1200 miles (1931km). It is a continuous movement of wildlife that can be seen in different areas at different times of the year. During certain phases of this annual trek, the animals disperse or slow down, whilst at other times the migration picks up speed, with the herds becoming larger and denser. Not only does the Wildebeest Great Migration vary from place to place and season to season but the movement of these large wildlife herds varies from year to year.

Please talk to a travel expert from African Budget Safaris about seeing the Wildebeest Great Migration on your safari to find out more. Also, check out our detailed article about the Great Migration in Serengeti and Masai Mara.
