Please note that this private safari itinerary is a sample based on the best routes. The tour program is flexible (and often adapted) to ensure the best safari experience. This Botswana Safari itinerary can also be tailored to suit individual preferences on request.
Depart from Maun early on the first morning of this Botswana Camping Safari. From your pre-tour accommodation in Maun, your private guide drives you to your first authentic safari camp in Moremi Game Reserve. Settle into the mobile safari camp at Xakanaxa in the heart of Moremi.
This afternoon, embark on your first 4x4 safari drive in the renowned Moremi Game Reserve of Botswana.
After your exhilarating 4x4 game drive, return to the mobile safari camp in Moremi for dinner and a laid-back evening around the campfire. At the end of the day, fall asleep in your comfortable camping bed as you listen to the sounds of the African bush.
At the start of this private Botswana Camping Safari, you can take an optional scenic flight (at extra cost) from Maun over the Okavango Delta to Moremi Game Reserve.
If you prefer not to overnight in Maun before your safari, or simply want to kick your Botswana Safari off with a scenic flight over the Okavango Delta, this option can be pre-booked by arrangement. If you opt for the scenic Okavango Delta flight you need to arrive at Maun Airport early on the first morning. Please note this is an optional activity, that is not included in the tour price.
Wake up to the wild African bush at our mobile safari camp in Moremi on day two of our eco-friendly Botswana Safari. Start your day with tea and coffee around the campfire, before setting off on a morning game drive inside Moremi Game Reserve.
Return to the mobile safari camp at Xakanaxa Lagoon for a hearty brunch followed by a refreshing nap in your spacious tent.
In the afternoon, tea is served and then we embark on our second 4x4 safari drive of the day. In the evening our mobile camping trip takes us back to our safari camp in Moremi Game Reserve.
Sit back and enjoy dinner and drinks under the stars as the stillness of night settles over the bush. Retreat to your spacious en-suite tent for a good night's sleep.
Moremi is one of the most beautiful and diverse game reserves in Africa. About a third of the Okavango Delta lies within Moremi. This is the only official protected area in the Okavango Delta, proclaimed in the early 1960s.
Moremi Game Reserve is on the eastern side of the Okavango Delta, where land and water habitats meet. The reserve thus incorporates a wide variety of terrains, including savannah grasslands, woodlands, waterways, lagoons, and islands. Its impressive diversity of ecosystems, in turn, supports a huge array of wildlife and bird species. This explains why Moremi reserve offers exceptional game viewing year-round.
This pristine wilderness area is famous for its high concentration of endangered African wild dogs. And, Moremi is one of the best Big 5 safari destinations in Botswana. Elephants, buffalos, and lions are commonly sighted. Rhinos have been successfully reintroduced to parts of Moremi, but are rarely seen and leopards are relatively easy to spot here. Wildebeest, zebra, hippo, giraffe, and various antelope species are also found in abundance in Moremi. It is also an excellent place to see rare red lechwe and sitatunga antelopes, which are seldom seen elsewhere, as well as the unusual tsessebe, sable, and roan antelopes. Moremi's birdlife is prolific and includes over 400 species of birds.
On day three of our Botswana Camping Safari, we move to our second safari camp. After breakfast at the mobile safari camp in Moremi, we set off for the Khwai area of Botswana.
We spend the next two nights of our private Botswana Safari camping in the Khwai region, next to Moremi Game Reserve.
Enjoy morning and afternoon game drives in Moremi and the Khwai region, stopping for a picnic lunch in the wilderness. By the time you arrive at the mobile safari camp in the Khwai area, everything has been set up for you already. You are not required to help take down camp, move it or set it up in its new bush location. Simply arrive and settle into your tent and the new mobile safari camp.
At the end of another rewarding day on safari in Botswana, relax around the campfire and tuck into a tasty dinner.
Day four of our eco-friendly Botswana Safari is dedicated to exploring the Khwai region.
We follow a similar rhythm to the previous days on safari. An early morning start with tea and coffee, before taking a game drive in the open-sided 4x4 safari vehicle. Back to our mobile safari camp for brunch and a rest, followed by afternoon tea. Then, head out in the late afternoon in search of the abundant wildlife found in the Khwai area.
While in the Khwai region, we embark on a guided mekoro trip. This unforgettable excursion replaces one of your game drives. A mokoro is a type of canoe, based on the traditional dug-out canoe (mokoro) used in this part of Africa. The mokoro is poled through the waterways by local guides in a similar fashion to gondoliers. Mokoro trips are ideal for water-based game viewing and exploring the waterways of the wild delta region of Botswana.
In the evening we return to camp for dinner and drinks around the campfire. Then, retire to your comfortable tent for a well-deserved sleep out in the African bush. The tents have en-suite bathrooms with warm bucket showers and bush toilets for added convenience and privacy.
The Khwai area is known for its outstanding game viewing. It is nestled between Moremi and Chobe Park, on the edge of the Okavango Delta. Due to this prime location–with no fences separating Khwai, Moremi, and Chobe–an abundance of varied wildlife moves through the area.
The Khwai wildlife area is made up of the Khwai Community Concession and the Khwai Private Reserve. Together these parks cover about 200,000 ha (494 210 ac) of Botswana wilderness. This Private Botswana Safari explores the Khwai Community Concession, along the Khwai River. Going on safari in the Khwai Concession directly benefits the local community that owns and manages the reserve, and thus supports wildlife conservation in Botswana.
One of the best places to see African wild dogs in Botswana, Khwai is an excellent place to see predators. These include lions, leopards, and hyenas. The Khwai River and floodplains host plenty of hippos, crocodiles, and antelopes like waterbuck and lechwe. In the wooded and grassland areas zebras, buffalos, giraffes, roan, and sable are abundant. Elephants are commonly sighted too. The Khwai area also offers exceptional birdwatching with its rich and diverse birdlife. Many aquatic species can be seen here, especially in the wet season. Bird sightings include eagles, cranes, egrets, vultures, storks (saddle-billed and marabou), and lilac-breasted rollers.
Today our private Botswana Camping Safari takes us from the Khwai area to Savuti. After breakfast around the campfire, it is time to head back out into the African bush.
The bulk of day five of our mobile camping trip is spent exploring the famous Savuti Marsh in Chobe National Park. At lunchtime, we pause for a picnic out in this remote part of Chobe Park. Then we continue our search for the large predators, elephant bulls, and other mammals Savuti is known for worldwide.
Our exciting 4x4 safari drive ends later this afternoon at our next mobile safari camp in Savuti. As with all of the mobile camps on this Botswana Private Safari, our mobile Savuti camp is set up and ready for you by the time you arrive. Simply, head to the campfire and settle in for dinner and drinks under the stars.
The next two days of our mobile camping safari are set aside for game viewing in the wild Savuti Channel area of Botswana.
Days follow a similar pattern, starting with tea and coffee around the fire followed by a guided game drive. Then, return to the safari camp for brunch, a siesta, and afternoon tea, before embarking on a late afternoon game drive. End your days off with dinner and drinks around the fire at our mobile safari camp in Savuti (also called Savute).
Your expert safari guide takes you in search of the remarkable wildlife of Savuti in open 4x4 safari vehicles, sharing insights and interesting facts along the way. As at the previous mobile safari camps in Botswana, you'll sleep in a spacious tent equipped with comfy twin beds. The camping beds are fitted with mattresses complete with bedding, linen, and pillows for added comfort.
The camp crew prepares a hearty meal and serves dinner and drinks around the campfire, as throughout your Private Botswana Safari.
The Savuti Marsh is a legendary, yet remote part of Chobe National Park. This northern region of Chobe, next to Linyanti, and Moremi, sees fewer visitors than the riverfront area.
Savuti hosts a high concentration of wildlife and is renowned for its predator and elephant sightings. In particular, the area is known for dramatic clashes between lions and spotted hyenas. The lions of the Savuti Channel are famous for hunting elephants! When the mysterious Savuti Channel dried up in the past (for decades at a time) and food became scarce, the resident lion prides survived by taking down elephants, as well as buffalos and giraffes.
The Savuti Channel meanders through the ancient Gubatsa Hills to the floodplains of the Savuti Marsh which teems with wildlife. It is an outstanding safari destination year-round. In summer (November/December) the rains arrive and the vegetation flourishes. Thousands of migrating zebras are drawn to the area, followed by lions and other hungry predators. This is also the peak birding season when masses of migrant birds move in, from Abdim's storks to carmine bee-eaters. The rainy season is also when baby antelopes abound. Winter, on the other hand, drives the animals to gather at the dwindling water and food sources, and predator action intensifies.
On day eight we head to the final mobile safari camp of our eco-friendly Botswana Camping Safari. This time, the crew sets up camp near the Chobe River in Chobe National Park.
Spend the day on a thrilling 4x4 safari in Chobe Park, breaking for a picnic lunch along the way. Early this evening you'll arrive at your next Botswana safari camp where a welcoming campfire and refreshing drinks await. Simple ease into African time and unwind out in the unspoiled wilderness.
At the close of another action-packed day on safari in Botswana, return to your en-suite tent for a sound sleep.
Enjoy two full days of diverse game viewing in Botswana's top national park, Chobe. We spend the next two nights of this low-impact Botswana Safari camping in the Chobe Riverfront area of Chobe National Park. As before, your mobile safari camp is set in a scenic spot deep in the Botswana wilderness. This enables you to immerse yourself in the wild and relish an authentic African bush experience.
A boat cruise on the Chobe River is included on one of your two full days here. Chobe Park is famous for its boat cruises which are ideal for admiring the scenery, watching birds, and even spotting animals along the river. The Chobe boat cruise replaces one of your game drives on day 9 or 10 of this Botswana camping trip.
Otherwise, the daily program is similar to before–two safari activities a day with meals and a rest back at the mobile safari camp in Chobe National Park.
Botswana's top national park, Chobe National Park is famous for its huge elephant population, hosting one of the highest concentrations of elephants in Africa. It is also known for its large buffalo herds. These two Big 5 mammal species, and a multitude of other animals and birds, are drawn to the Chobe River. Especially in the dry season, as the Chobe River is the only permanent water source in the region. The Chobe Riverfront (or Serondela floodplains), boasts some of the highest wildlife concentrations in Africa.
Chobe Park is also home to lions and leopards, with rhinos being the only Big Five animal absent. Other predators include cheetahs, hyenas, and African wild dogs. Herds of Burchell's zebras are commonly seen, as are giraffes and various antelope species. Chobe is the best place in Africa for boat-based game viewing. The Chobe River is a magnet for a diverse array of birds and animals. Birdlife is prolific in the rainy season with over 450 species recorded, including the iconic African eagle. Besides wallowing hippos and lurking crocodiles, a boat cruise on the Chobe River showcases the stunning scenery of Chobe Park.
Start the final day of your Private Botswana Safari off with fresh coffee and tea at camp. Then venture back out into the bush on a final 4x4 safari drive.
After your last game drive in Chobe Park, return to the mobile safari camp for brunch. Then it is time to pack up and say goodbye to the African bush.
This afternoon your guide drives you from Chobe to Kasane, the final stop on your unforgettable Botswana Camping Safari.
A mobile camping safari in Botswana is a truly wild African adventure. An authentic, eco-friendly camping trip to Botswana's prime wildlife areas. These low-impact Botswana Camping Safari trips are conducted in small private groups.
They are cheaper than lodge safaris but offer a higher level of comfort than regular Botswana camping safaris. The difference with these mobile camping safaris is that no participation is required of guests and the camping accommodation is more comfortable. You still sleep under the stars and get to immerse yourself in the African bush. But the crew sets up the mobile camps and moves them to new locations in the wilderness areas you visit. They take care of all the groundwork (meal preparation and logistics) so you can simply enjoy being out in nature.
The tents have en-suite bathrooms with a bucket shower and bush loo. These spacious dome tents feature side tables with lamps, and twin camping beds with mattresses, linen, pillows, and bedding to ensure you sleep well. Each tent has a small outdoor area under an awning where you can sit back in your camping chair and survey the wilderness. There are also family tents (adjoining dome tents) for families traveling with children.
The mobile safari camps are set up in secluded wilderness locations to provide an exclusive and private Botswana safari adventure. Get the best of both worlds–camping out in the middle of the wildlife-rich bush without roughing it–at a fantastic price.
