One of the most beautiful wildlife areas in Botswana, Khwai is a remarkable safari destination. Khwai is a lesser-known gem due to its abundant wildlife, diverse habitats, and exciting array of activities.
The Khwai River Area offers excellent game viewing. The wildlife-rich Khwai Floodplains are sandwiched between Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park. With no fences separating these top African game reserves there is a massive amount of wildlife migrating through the Khwai area.
In the Khwai Private Reserve night game drives are permitted, unlike in Moremi Game Reserve. In the Khwai Community Concession and Khwai Private Reserve guests can also enjoy guided bush walks (in season).
Visitors can also take guided mokoro (dug-out canoe) trips in Khwai, which are not possible in Moremi Game Reserve. On safaris in the Khwai region, guests can also visit the traditional village of Khwai adding a cultural component to their wildlife adventures in Botswana.
One of the highlights of a safari Khwai is camping wild in the bush. In the Khwai River Area, you can opt to stay at eco-friendly mobile safari camps that offer an authentic Botswana safari experience.
These mobile camping safaris offer more comfort and luxury than regular African camping safaris. The tents are more spacious and have en-suite bathrooms. They are fitted with comfortable beds, side tables, lamps, and basic furnishings. Plus, most of the mobile camping safaris in Khwai are fully serviced which means the camp crew prepares meals, takes care of chores, and sets up the safari camps.
If camping isn't your thing, there are affordable lodge safaris to the Khwai River Area. These are often based at safari lodges and guesthouses in or near the small rural village of Khwai.
