A 10 day Camping Safari done in the comfort of a 4x4 landrover that covers several of the top Game Parks in both Kenya & Tanzania.
Your Safari starts off in Nairobi, Kenya and heads to the scenic Masai Mara Game Reserve via the Great Rift Valley. In Kenya's Premier Game Reserve - The Masai Mara - you will go in search of the wildlife that has made this park one of the top Game Parks in Africa. If you lucky your trip will coincide with the Wildebeest Migration, one of the most spectacular wildlife shows on Earth!
From the game-rich Masai Mara its off to Lake Nakuru National Park, home to fantastic game but perhaps best known for its spectacular bird life.
Leaving Kenya we cross into Tanzania heading for Arusha on our way to the vast Serengeti National Park, Tanzania's best known Park. We will spend our days here on game drives in search of the abundant wildlife of this top game park before heading to Africa's "Garden of Eden", the Ngorongoro Crater. We explore the wildlife-rich crater keeping an eye out for the Game that might have eluded us so far. From Ngorongoro it's off to the Town of Arusha where we will overnight before we head back the next day to Nairobi, Kenya.
We depart from Kenya's capital, Nairobi, in the morning travelling down the Escarpment to the floor of the Great Rift Valley and south to the town of Narok and the Masai Mara. Along the way we stop for lunch and in the afternoon we embark on our first exciting game drive.
Our overnight stay is at a permanent Talek riverside campsite located on the edge of the famous Masai Mara Reserve. We camp in stand-up tents with beds or for those looking for a touch more comfort there are also small wooden cabins at the campsite. Hot showers are available in the camp and meals are served in the dinning mess or in the open-air dining area.
Day 2 - Masai Mara
Today we spend a full day exploring the game-rich Masai Mara on early morning and late afternoon game drives.
The Mara is home to an abundance of wildlife including Masai giraffe, baboons, warthogs, bat eared foxes, grey jackals, spotted hyena, topis, impala, hartebeests and wildebeest. There are also plenty of elephants, buffaloes, zebras and hippos in the Mara, making for excellent game viewing. Lions are commonly sighted as they bask after a heavy meal, or prowl the plains for their next prey. Although harder to spot cheetahs and leopards are also reasonably common in the Mara.
The Masai Mara reserve covers 1510 sq km of incredible wide-open landscapes and fertile riverine woodland following the looping meanders of the Mara and Talek rivers. Wherever you go in the Mara you will see a frequent amount of wildlife! The ultimate wildlife action here is without a doubt the annual wildebeest migration in July and August when millions of these grazers move north from the Serengeti in search of lusher grass before turning south again in October.
Balloon trips are an entirely outstanding way of seeing the savannah plains and the wildlife after which you come back down for a beautiful champagne breakfast. These trips can be arranged upon booking.
On day 3 we leave the spectacular Masai Mara Game Reserve game viewing and stopping for lunch en route to the Lake Nakuru National Park.
In the afternoon we head into Nakuru Park on a game drive. The game park covers 180 sq km of Kenya and is home to warthogs, waterbuck, buffaloes, reedbucks, and the occasional leopard. White and black rhinos were introduced to the national park some years ago and you will find white rhino at the southern end. Lake Nakuru Park has also retained its reputation as an ornithologists' delight with more than 400 species of bird found here. We spend the night at a campsite just outside of town.
Departing from the campsite we head back up the escarpment, stopping for lunch along the way. We cross the Namanga border into Tanzania and make our way to Arusha where we camp overnight.
In the morning we leave Arusha making our way to the Serengeti National Park. Along the way we stop for lunch and enjoy some en route game viewing. We spend the evening relaxing at our overnight campsite after dinner.
For the next three days we explore the vast Serengeti plains in search of the variety of wildlife found here. Serengeti is Africa's most famous and Tanzania's largest park covering 14,736 sq km and is adjoining with the Masai Mara National reserve in Kenya. With a wildebeest population of about 2 million and several other hoofed species (which include zebra, Thomson's gazelle, impala, topi, Grants gazelle, Kongoni, Eland, Kirk's dik dik, klipspringer, roan, Oryx, oribi, waterbuck, buffalo, giraffe and warthog), it is sure to attract a string of prey such as lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, golden jackals and bat eared foxes. Elephants are relatively scarce and the few remaining black rhinoceros are restricted to the Moru Koppies area
On day 6 we depart early in the morning, taking a game viewing drive west through the western corridor of the Serengeti to the Central region of Seronera. We overnight at one of the campsites in the Seronera area.
You can visit the park all year round but there is less game in the park during the dry season - July /October, where they migrate to the Masai Mara in Kenya. During March to May the herds move in search of grazing to the southern section and in May to June, they move towards the western corridor of the park. Serengeti in the low season will still offer game viewing to match that of any park in Africa, and for some, the fact that there will be fewer tourists may be an added bonus.
We spend the whole of today game viewing in the central Serengeti and overnight at one of the campsites in Seronera.
The Serengeti offers rewarding bird viewing including common sightings of ostrich and kori bustard, as well as a variety of larks, finches, and raptors, with the most distinctive small bird being the lilac breasted roller.
Keeping an eye out for game we drive southeast up into the magnificent Ngorongoro Conservation Area where we spend the night at the Simba (Lion) campsite on the crater rim. The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's biggest whole volcanic caldera at 8300 sq km and is arguably the most stunning arena.
It is frequently described as one of the wonders of the world, not only because of its geological magnificence, but also because it serves as an extraordinary natural sanctuary for some of Africa's largest populations of large mammals. Ngorongoro and other freestanding mountains are volcanic in origin, formed during the fracturing process that created the Rift valley 15 to 20 million years ago. When it peaked in size 3 million years ago it was a similar height to Mt. Kilimanjaro today!
Starting our day refreshingly early we enjoy a full morning's crater tour as we have a greater chance of seeing wildlife at this early hour. After lunch, we relocate you to Arusha town where we camp at a campsite or you have a choice of checking in to your own hotel at an extra cost.
Arusha is a vibrant and bustling town as it is the gateway to Tanzania's national parks and game reserves. After a leisurely breakfast and a walk around Arusha town, which is situated at the base of Mt. Meru, we travel back to Nairobi where this superb Kenya and Tanzania Safari ends.
