This 3-day Sossusvlei Safari in Namibia takes you on a quick Namib Desert adventure at an amazing price!
For a quick taste of Namibia’s magical spaces spend two nights camping under an old camelthorn tree at Sesriem Camp in the ancient Namib Desert. Highlights of this very affordable Namibia Camping Safari include the iconic ochre dunes of Sossusvlei in the Namib-Naukluft National Park, with sunrise at Dune 45, a 4x4 adventure to surreal Deadvlei surrounded by the Sossusvlei dunescape, and a stroll along ancient Sesriem Canyon.
The Namibia Budget Safari to Sossusvlei departs Windhoek every Monday morning and ends back in Windhoek on Wednesday afternoons.
This short Sossusvlei Safari in Namibia departs from Windhoek on Monday mornings. Your driver collects you from your pre-tour accommodation at 09h00am. After a short tour introduction, we head southwest out of Windhoek into Namibia’s iconic Namib Desert. The drive passes through rugged mountain landscapes as we cross Namibia’s central plateau and stop at the hamlet of Rehoboth for last-minute provisions. From here we continue through desert landscapes, stopping to enjoy a picnic style lunch en-route.
Our destination is Sesriem, a tiny place in the heart of the Namib Desert on the outskirts of the Namib-Naukluft National Park, gateway to the iconic dunescapes of Sossusvlei. We aim to arrive around mid-afternoon to set up camp beneath a sprawling, old camelthorn tree. There is an option to head out for a first sight of the wonders of the world’s most ancient desert in the late afternoon light. We take a quick drive to nearby Elim Dune in time to witness the beautiful golden light just before dusk as it reflects off the dunescape.
The camp is a relatively short walk from here, so you may opt to walk back in the setting sun. The evening is spent around the campfire under an awe-inspiring canopy of stars.
Day 2 of our Namibia Camping Safari sees an early start as we wake up before dawn and head into the Namib-Naukluft National Park, and the towering red-orange dunes of the world's oldest desert, in time for the rising sun. Sunrise and sunset are ideal times to see the dunes as the light is incredible and depth of field extraordinary.
Our first stop is iconic Namibian landmark, Dune 45, a sand dune so-called because it lies 45 kilometres from Sesriem. We climb the dune to enjoy sunrise from the top, witnessing the shifting light over the vibrant ochre-coloured dunes stretching into the distance. Once back down, we enjoy a hearty breakfast at the tour vehicle before heading on.
We then drive the final few kilometres in our vehicle to the spot where 2x4 vehicles need to park. From here you are collected in a 4x4 shuttle to continue to the heart of fascinating Sossusvlei. The final 5 kilometres follows the historic Tsauchab Riverbed, an ephemeral river that is mostly dry but sometimes flows in periods of great rains. Aeons ago the Tsauchab would flow all the way to the Atlantic Ocean during these sporadic floods, but the passing millennia saw dune fields begin to form (about five million years ago) and the river course was overrun by wind-blown sand. Now, Sossusvlei marks the river’s end and floods occasionally (about every ten years).
Our 4x4 takes us to Dead Vlei, an ancient, crusty pan entirely encircled by the red-orange dunes and dotted, remarkably, with the skeletons of dead camelthorn trees which have stood here for more than a millennium. This is an other-worldly scene and photographers will go nuts! There is time to stroll around, and you can try to climb one of the world's highest dunes, which rises 300 metres above us.
We then head back to our vehicle and return to camp for lunch and a refreshing dip in the pool. Later in the afternoon, we head out to explore Sesriem Canyon just 4 kilometres from camp, we take a walk in the canyon, chiselled out by the Tsauchab River over aeons. It is much cooler than the surrounds and the warm late afternoon light highlights the textures and colours of the canyon walls. Then, we head back to camp to spend another breath-taking evening under the stars, the Milky Way seeming close enough to touch.
Day 3 of our Sossusvlei Namibia Safari sees us pack up camp and make our way back to Windhoek. Along the way we stop at the tiny hamlet of Solitaire - a welcome landmark for many a desert traveller in these wide open spaces. We have time to sample the apple pie that the quaint café is known for.
Our drive to Windhoek takes us back through the breath-taking mountain vistas across Namibia's central plateau and through the tiny settlements of BűellsPort and Rehoboth. Our tour ends on arrival in Windhoek mid-afternoon when you are dropped off at the lodging of our choosing within the city limits.
This tour does take children.
