This excellent-value Botswana Safari begins in Maun, driving into the Okavango Delta in a 4x4 safari vehicle. Start by exploring the idyllic Okavango Delta's narrow maze of waterways and estuaries in traditional-style mokoro boats, or on foot with professional guides. From there, fly by helicopter to your second luxury tented camp on the borders of Moremi Game Reserve where an impressive variety of wildlife gathers, and embark on two 4x4 game drives or mokoro rides a day.
In the Okavango Delta, we stay at Xaoo and Mogogelo Safari Camps, both of which offer every creature comfort and beautiful views. After 4 nights in the delta, fly to the Chobe River in northeastern Botswana and spend 3 nights at Wildtrack Safari Eco Lodge, a tented camp designed for privacy and comfort. This solar-powered luxury camp is located near Kazuma Pan in the heart of the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA) which protects the migration routes of elephants and herds of plains game. On the last day, head to the nearby Chobe National Park for game viewing and a cruise on the Chobe River for more wildlife spotting from the water. This Okavango Delta, Moremi, Kazuma Pan & Chobe Safari ends in Kasane on the Zimbabwe border near Victoria Falls.
Our Botswana Okavango Delta & Kazuma Pan Chobe Safari Adventure kicks off in Maun, where you are greeted at Maun International Airport before heading off on a 45-minute road transfer to our first destination: a tented camp nestled in a forested island overlooking the Okavango Delta flood plains.
Xaoo Safari Camp is located on a private concession that shares a border with the southern part of the famous Moremi Game Reserve. Covering just under 5,000 square kilometers (1,900 sq mi) of the eastern side of the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve is a study of contrasts, from permanent water lagoons to dry areas of mopane woodland and acacia forests, to seasonal floodplains which fill up after the rains each year.
These diverse habitats are home to nearly 500 species of bird and an impressive array of other wildlife including lion, leopard, African bush elephant, African buffalo, hippopotamus, giraffe, plains zebra, blue wildebeest, cheetah, spotted hyena, black-backed jackal, common warthog, and impala. The area is considered a significant habitat for African wild dogs and is also a great place to spot a Red Lechwe antelope specially adapted to these marshy conditions. Additionally, Moremi Game Reserve is one of the few places in Botswana you might come across a black rhinoceros.
There is no better way to experience the delta than by mokoro, a dug-out canoe traditionally hewn from either an ebony or sausage tree - though today most of the mekoro (plural) are made from fiberglass to preserve the magnificent old trees of the area. Your guide stands and poles silently through the narrow maze of waterways and estuaries of the delta while you relax and take in the sights and sounds of this magical place.
Guides come from the local villages, so you benefit from their indigenous knowledge as you drift along. Pause at small islands along the way where you can alight and explore further on foot. This is an opportunity to get close to the wonders, big and small, of one of Africa's last truly wild places. Your knowledgeable guide points out fascinating insects, plants, tracks, or other signs of animal activity. Each day you will explore more of this fascinating area, embarking on a morning and afternoon activity of your choosing - a mokoro ride, walking safari, 4x4 game drive, or a cultural village tour. Helicopter and fixed-wing scenic flights are alternative activities available (own expense). Overnight wilderness camping is also an option (own expense).
Return to camp in the heat of the day to relax by the pool or watch the comings and goings at the lagoon which lies alongside the camp. Meals are served out on the spacious deck area. Keep a lookout for visiting wildlife and birds. This is a great spot to put your feet up at the end of the day and admire a beautiful sunset over the Delta, listening to the sounds of nature as the stars come out.
Xaoo Safari Camp nestles on a forested island overlooking the flood plains of the south-eastern Okavango Delta. A lagoon alongside the property has an abundance of small marsh animals, attracting birds, foraging herbivores, and those animals who feed on them. Watch the scene unfold from the swimming pool and boma campfire of the main area.
Accommodation is in six spacious luxury tents with ceiling fans, an indoor bath, and an outside shower. The camp is family-friendly and a sofa bed in the tent can be made up as an additional bed for up to 2 children under 12yrs or 1 additional adult. The camp is run on sustainable principles – it is fully solar-powered, and there is a strong focus on community involvement and support for the local guides and mokoro polers in the game drives and mokoro experiences.
Xaoo Safari Camp is located near the tiny village of Xoxao, on a private concession that shares a border with the Moremi Game Reserve, known for its striking number of thriving wildlife species, birdlife, and unique delta landscapes. It is a 45-minute road transfer from Maun (inclusive of rate).
After a final morning activity followed by a hearty breakfast, it is time to bid farewell to Xaoo Safari Camp. A helicopter will transfer you to your next destination, Mogogelo Camp. This will offer you a fantastic aerial perspective on the layout of Moremi and the movement of wildlife through the Delta.
On arrival at Mogogelo, settle in and enjoy a delicious Lunch/High Tea at camp before heading out on an afternoon game drive. The camp is located on the delta’s seasonal floodplains, in a private concession on the eastern edge of the Okavango Delta. Discover the unique landscape on twice daily game drives, which depart at sunrise in the mornings and again in the late afternoon to overlap with sunset.
Exploring is done under the expert lead of local Motswana guides. We travel on an open 4x4 safari vehicle which offers fantastic views of the surrounding landscape and the animals you encounter. Get up close with elephants, buffalos, lions, and a host of other creatures. Experience the tradition of having sundowners - at a scenic spot in the bush mid-game drive - an iconic element of any safari in southern Africa!
Afternoon game drives become night drives after the sun sets, bringing the nocturnal creatures to the spotlight. Leopards and lions are more active at night, while nocturnal creatures like civets, porcupines, honey badgers, and jackals are likely to be seen. During the dry season, walking safaris are a possibility for those who’d like to explore on foot.
Between game drives, you are at leisure to relax at camp, take a dip in the swimming pool, have a drink at the bar, or simply enjoy the solitude of the bush from your private deck.
Mogogelo Camp is a classic tented safari camp on a private concession in the seasonal floodplains of the Okavango, on the southern border of the Moremi Game Reserve. Enjoy an authentic Botswana safari experience in the shared, thatched dining area which houses a bar, outdoor lounge, and swimming pool, with a traditional fire pit extending towards the waterhole.
10 luxury tents with decks overlook an open plain and permanent waterhole, wandering game offering an opportunity to watch wildlife from the comfort of all areas of camp. The rooms are well-spaced, ensuring maximum privacy and tranquillity for our guests, each with free standing fan and indoor shower.
Go on game drives in the surrounding private concession and southern Moremi Game Reserve, for a chance to experience the park’s incredible wildlife and natural beauty. For a unique and tranquil experience, our dedicated Mokoro station provides day trips to explore the peaceful waters of the Okavango Delta.
After a final morning activity followed by a hearty breakfast, it is time to bid farewell to Mogogelo. A light aircraft will transfer you northeast out of the Delta. Enjoy the sweeping views over the wild landscape during the flight to Kasane Road. From here a one-hour road transfer will take you to Wildtrack Safaris Eco Lodge. Settle in, refresh with some lunch, then embark on an afternoon game drive to explore the terrain.
The lodge lies near the center of the newly formed Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA) which aims to promote migration and protect an area larger than Germany/Austria combined, nearly twice as large as the United Kingdom. It includes the vast river basins of both the Kavango and Zambezi rivers and sees 5 countries converge: Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. It is where seasonal waters flow from the uplands, spilling out in a delta onto desert sands. A truly unique landscape. The sheer scale of KAZA provides habitats from grassland, wetland, dry forest, and a variety of woodland types, to saltpans and scrublands. The protection of this vast area enables the large-scale seasonal migrations of giant herds of elephants and other herbivores.
Early morning and afternoon 4x4 safari game drives from Wildtrack Safaris Eco Lodge take us into the forest reserves which lie alongside the legendary Kuzuma Pans, a series of pans stretching from Botswana into Zimbabwe which swell with water in the rainy season. Many of the pans are filled with borehole water during the dry season, attracting great numbers of migrating wildlife. It lies on a busy elephant corridor, and you can also expect to see herds of wildebeest and buffalo, roan antelope, rare sable, giraffe, lion, and leopard. The Oribi, a small antelope, is endemic. Wild dogs and cheetahs can also be observed around the pans as this is ideal hunting terrain for them. The waters attract many birds making it a bird-watching paradise boasting over 380 species including waterbirds storks, crowned cranes, stilts, cormorants, ducks, and kingfishers.
Day 6 is spent as you decide. Head out before dawn for an early game drive before returning to camp for a hearty breakfast. Relax at the lodge and later head out on your next game drive or choose to visit a nearby village or learn more about community upliftment and agriculture projects which are supported in the area. You may prefer to book a day trip (own expense) to explore the surrounding attractions such as the mighty Victoria Falls or Hwange National Park.
Wildtrack Safaris Eco Lodge is an eco-friendly lodge in the heart of the newly formed Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier conservation area, which spans international borders and provides unparalleled access to world-renowned Chobe National Park, the majestic Victoria Falls, Hwange National Park, and the vast Kazuma Pan all sitting on its doorstep.
The lodge has 10 solar-powered thatched luxury chalets, and one luxury family tent, all with fans, indoor baths, and outdoor showers. And, after a gourmet dinner, the boma fireplace is the perfect spot to relax under the stars watching animals visit the nearby waterhole.
Wildtrack Safaris Eco Lodge was recently awarded full ‘Ecotourism’ grading and continues to work to promote sustainable development within the surrounding community. Immerse yourself through cultural interactions, visit community projects, or learn about sustainable farming practices on a guided tour of a nearby farm.
On Day 7, have an early breakfast and head by road to Chobe National Park, first protected as a game reserve in 1961 and proclaimed a national park in 1968. In the dry season, animals converge on this stretch of the Chobe River - the park is known for the huge herds of elephants and buffalos. Chobe has 4 distinct areas, each area known for concentrations of specific animals. Savuti is famous for lion and hyena, Linyati for hippo and crocodile, and Nogatsaa and Serondella for elephant. Many other types of animals may be sighted, including the rare puku and Chobe bushbuck, and some 460 bird species, including raptors, vultures, and inland waterbirds
After a 3-hour game drive, we enjoy lunch in nearby Kasane town. From here we climb onto a boat for an afternoon cruise on the Chobe River, enjoying the countryside from another perspective and keeping a lookout out for the famously large family groups of elephants that troop down to the river to drink and bathe.
We return to Wildtrack Safaris Eco Lodge for a hearty dinner.
After a final morning activity followed by a hearty breakfast, it is time to bid farewell to Wildtrack Safaris Eco Lodge. You will be transferred by road to the nearby town, Kasane, where our Botswana Safari will end.
