Quick Itinerary Overview

This Private Madagascar Tour Package takes you to the wild Masoala Peninsula to experience stunning beaches, incredible wildlife, and beautiful scenery.

Masoala is home to one of the largest and most diverse unspoiled rainforests in Madagascar, hosting numerous unclassified plant and animal species. Here you will encounter plenty of Madagascar's lemurs, chameleons, other animal species, and spectacular birdlife.

This Budget Madagascar Safari includes a trip to the island of Nosy Mangabe. Bursting with wildlife, and famed for its aye-aye lemurs and the leaf-tailed gecko, the Nosy Mangabe reserve has beautiful sandy coves, a mass of trees, and strangler figs.

Masoala can only be reached by boat and is ideal for avid nature lovers with an average level of fitness.

Itinerary for this Tour

DAY 1: Antananarivo – Madagascar

This Private Madagascar Tour begins and ends in Antananarivo, the vibrant capital city of Madagascar.

On arrival in Antananarivo, you will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Then you are free to rest and relax at the hotel, or go out and explore Antananarivo, also known as Tana. With its bustling markets, friendly people, and charming old town with freestone churches and ancient royal places, it is a unique and attractive city.

DAY 2: Antananarivo to Maroantsetra – Madagascar

Today you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Maroantsetra on the north-eastern coast of Madagascar. Here you will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel.

Maroantsetra is a quaint seaside town located at the base of Antongil Bay, in a beautiful riverine setting. This lush area is dotted with rice paddies and coconut palm plantations and the scent of vanilla and cloves fills the air.

  • Breakfast

DAY 3: Maroantsetra to Masoala Peninsula – Madagascar

After breakfast on day three of the Private Madagascar Tour Package, you are transferred to the port where you board a boat to Masoala. The boat trip to Masoala takes about two hours from Maroantsetra.

The Masoala Peninsula is the site of a 230,000 ha national park containing one of the best rainforests in the country and the largest protected area, terrestrial and marine, in Madagascar.

After our arrival, we will go on a three-hour walk in the primary forest to see reptiles, birds, lemurs, and orchids as well as rare and unique species such as the green lizard, the red owl, the tomato frog, or the serpent eagle. You will even have the opportunity to relax and take a refreshing swim in the river. We end the day off with a laid-back barbecue at our eco-friendly lodge.

  • Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

DAY 4: Masoala Peninsula – Madagascar

Begin day four of your Budget Madagascar Safari with a bird-watching trip in Masoala. After your three-hour birding excursion, visit a local village surrounded by vanilla, clove, and coffee plantations.

Masoala Peninsula is one of Madagascar's premier trekking and hiking areas. It also offers excellent opportunities for sea kayaking and snorkeling - a simple mask is enough to admire the colorful marine world. This afternoon you are free to relax or go snorkeling in the Masoala Marine Reserve. Between July and September, you will also have the chance to see giant humpback whales in the Bay of Antongil.

  • Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

DAY 5: Masoala to Nosy Mangabe – Madagascar

This morning you head to the island of Nosy Mangabe, by boat. Nosy Mangabe is a scenic island and nature reserve, inhabited by a rich variety of wildlife.

This reserve is also one of the best places to see aye-ayes in the wild. Today we visit the nature reserve to admire its endemic animals and plants.

Later you will have the exciting opportunity to see the Betsimisaraka tombs. The Betsimisaraka tribe is Madagascar's second-largest ethnic group and inhabits most of the central and north-eastern coastal region. The name Betsimisaraka, which means "those who stand together", refers to the time when the tribe's confederation was forged from several smaller tribes in the early 18th century.

This evening we take a night walk in the nature reserve to search for nocturnal animals. With luck, we sill spot the endangered ‘aye-aye’ - the world’s largest nocturnal primate. We spend night five of our Private Madagascar Tour on the island of Nosy Mangabe.

  • Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

DAY 6: Nosy Mangabe to Maroantsetra to Antananarivo – Madagascar

After breakfast, it is time to take a boat ride back to Maroantsetra. Back on the mainland of Madagascar, you are transferred to the airport for your return flight to Antananarivo. When you are back in the picturesque capital a transfer will take you to your hotel.

Today you have ample opportunity to explore the capital city, its bustling markets, diverse culture, and streets decorated with craft designs. You can wander through the capital's steep and narrow streets, taking in its architecture, atmosphere, and vibrance. Or you can climb up to the old rova (palace) and enjoy the views over Antananarivo and the surrounding countryside. The town is at its best in the evening when the setting sun spectacularly illuminates its hillsides.

DAY 7: Antananarivo – Madagascar
