This South Luangwa Park & Lake Malawi Safari departs from Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi. We meet up at 08h30 in the morning or collect you from your pre-tour accommodation in Lilongwe, leaving the city at about 09h00. Heading to Luangwa in the tour transfer vehicle we take a picnic lunch along with us.
From Lilongwe, we travel to Mchinji, a town located near the Zambian border in an area of open grasslands and the Mchinji Hills of Malawi. Then we continue to the nearby Zambian border and on to the lively town of Chipata, a short drive into Zambia. Leaving Chipata we follow a dirt road to Luangwa Valley, making our way to our lodge near the game-rich Mfuwe area of Luangwa.
Arriving at the safari lodge in the mid-afternoon we settle into our chalets and have afternoon tea and coffee. Dinner is served at the lodge from 19h30 onwards.
Our days on safari in South Luangwa National Park start with an early morning wake up call for some tea, coffee and a light snack before we venture into the untamed bush. We aim to embark on our morning game drives in South Luangwa Park at 6:00 am, as mornings are an excellent time for game viewing.
The game drives in South Luangwa Park, Zambia's top wilderness area, are conducted in open 4x4 safari vehicles to ensure the best wildlife viewing in this unspoilt wilderness area. We take drinks and snacks along for your enjoyment in the game park.
After our morning's exploration, we make our way back to the safari lodge in time for a delicious brunch. Relax, take a swim, enjoy lunch and a rest before our afternoon to night game drive starting at about 16h00. South Luangwa Park is renowned for its excellent night game viewing drives, which are included in this African Safari. On night drives a powerful spotlight is used to sight nocturnal creatures roaming in the bush.
We return from our rewarding game drive in this pristine wilderness area of Zambia at around 20h00 for dinner and overnight at the lodge.
You also have the option of embarking on a full day game drive or a game walk in season at extra cost.
The Luangwa lodge that we stay in is situated on the banks of the Luangwa River and consists of en-suite chalets, each built from stone, concrete and wood.
Each of these chalets is spacious and well ventilated with a canvas roof and is designed to allow for some great views. Each room is fully kitted out and each chalet has a veranda with a view of the river and the Luangwa Park.
Reaching Lake Malawi in the mid-afternoon we settle in at our charming lakeside hotel. Walk down to the kilometre-long private beach or stroll around the immaculate gardens before enjoying sundowners as the sun sets over the third largest freshwater lake in the world.
We stay in comfortable rooms overlooking the lake, at a well-known lakeside hotel on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis.
The last full day on this Zambia and Malawi Safari is spent relaxing on the scenic shores of Lake Malawi.
Today you can enjoy a variety of non-motorized water sports, such as snorkelling, at Lake Malawi (included in your tour price) as well as optional motorized activities (extra cost). Lake Malawi is home to over 800 fish species - more freshwater species than found in the whole of Europe and North America combined. The vast majority of these abundant fish belong to the brightly coloured Cichlid group.
Overnight at the Lake Malawi hotel is on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis.
Our well-known hotel is located along a kilometre-long stretch of private beach in beautiful scented gardens planted with bougainvillaea and frangipani. The hotel still has a grand colonial charm and provides direct access to the beach. The charming hotel features a swimming pool, tennis court and a number of watersport facilities.
On day six we have breakfast and say goodbye to the beautiful Lake Malawi, transferring you to Lilongwe.
