Day 1: Qacha's Nek, Matatiele, & Semonkong - Lesotho

Your 4-Day Private Katse Dam & Lesotho Fly-in Tour departs Johannesburg on an early morning flight to Pietermaritzburg's Oribi Airport, where your guide collects you for the transfer to Underberg, in the Drakensberg foothills (Maloti Mountains in Lesotho). Continue towards the Qacha's Nek border region and enjoy a brunch stop in Matatiele before entering Lesotho. Descend the 21km Semonkong Pass into the highlands and arrive in the bustling donkey and horse-trading town of Semonkong, high in the mountains. Check into your lodge before heading out to visit the spectacular Maletsunyane Falls, one of the world's highest single-drop waterfalls. You may opt to hike, ride traditional Basotho ponies, or drive to the viewpoint. Return to Semonkong Lodge for dinner as authentic mountain village life unfolds around you, with horses, donkeys and cattle ushered home by shepherds at sunset.

Day 2: Thaba Bosiu & Hlotse - Lesotho

Visit a dinosaur footprint site near Roma, before continuing to Thaba Bosiu Cultural Centre, the historic burial place of Basotho kings. This dam, situated high up in the Lesotho mountains, is renowned for its dramatic scenery and role in supplying water to South Africa through the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. Enjoy lunch at Katse and take a guided walk along the dam wall to learn about its construction and significance.

Your journey continues across Lesotho's remote highland 4x4 terrain known as the "Roof of Africa," passing dramatic mountain landscapes and isolated villages before arriving in Mokhotlong. Thabana Ntlenyana, the highest mountain in southern Africa, is nearby, close to the source of the Senqu River, Lesotho's largest river. Continue over Black Mountain, the highest point on the Sani Pass route, and visit a remote shepherd's village to learn about mountain life and traditional bread baking.

Stop for lunch at the "Highest Pub in Africa" (weather and time permitting) before descending the iconic Sani Pass with its dramatic switchbacks and panoramic Drakensberg landscape views.
