Itinerary for this Tour

Day 1 to 3: Chobe National Park, Chobe Elephant Camp - Botswana

This 9-day Budget Botswana Safari begins with collection from the airport near Chobe National Park. From here you are transferred to our first safari camp, Chobe Elephant Camp. Making our way to the nearby Chobe Elephant Camp, we travel west along the edge of Chobe National Park. The eco-friendly camp is set on a rocky ridge, overlooking the Chobe floodplains and bushveld, providing a stunning view of this prime Botswana safari destination.

Your stay at Chobe Elephant Camp is centred around game viewing, with downtime to chill at the lodge between activities. Expert local guides take you on game drives, sharing their knowledge of the region and its wildlife with you. You also enjoy game-viewing boat cruises on the Chobe River which is an outstanding way to get up close to birds and animals along the river course. Chobe National Park is famous for its huge elephant herds and also hosts an abundance of other mammals, such as buffalos, antelopes, lions, giraffes, zebras, and hippos. You can also spend some time in a rural village getting a glimpse into the lives and culture of the local Sibuya tribe.

Days begin with an early breakfast, served at about 6h00 or 6h30, depending on the season. Safari activities take place in the early mornings and late afternoons, with lunch at about midday (depending on transfers and activities). Dinner is served back at the camp at about 19h30 or 20h00, followed by free time to relax.

You have the option of embarking on a boat cruise as part of a full-day adventure arranged by Chobe Elephant Camp. The day begins with an early breakfast at camp followed by a morning game drive in Chobe National Park. We exit Chobe at around midday or in the early afternoon, depending on wildlife sightings, enjoying a picnic lunch in the national park or on the boat. From Chobe National Park we head to Kasane where we board the boat for our relaxing Chobe River cruise. Cruising along the river at this time of day, we are sure to spot elephants drinking and bathing, along with numerous other animals and birds. After the boat cruise, you can return to camp for sundowners or head off on a short sunset game drive in Chobe Park. (Depending on water levels, the boat cruise may take place from the jetty within the park and can in this instance be done as a morning or afternoon activity: please note that these are only guidelines and schedules are flexible depending on a variety of things, and will be discussed at camp on your arrival or during your stay.)

Day 4 to 6: Khwai & Moremi, Khwai Guest House - Botswana

On day four of this Budget Botswana Safari, we take a scenic flight in a small fixed-wing plane from Kasane to the Khwai River Area, on the fringes of the world-renowned Moremi Game Reserve. We fly over the untamed bush and rural Botswana, landing at the Khwai airstrip. For the next 3 nights, you stay at the Khwai Guest House, located in the rural Khwai village, about three and a half hours from Maun.

Wildlife moves freely between Moremi Game Reserve and the Khwai Concession Area and your time here is spent exploring these areas on game viewing activities which include venturing into the bush on game drives in open safari vehicles, embarking on night drives and taking bush walks (in season). A highlight of your time here is exploring the waterways in a traditional dug-out canoe called a mokoro. Exploring the pristine Moremi Game Reserve area of the famous Okavango Delta by Mokoro is a must - gliding quietly along the channels as you look out for birds and animals! The quietness and slowness of the mokoro make for an unforgettable Botswana safari experience discovering channels and lagoons and spotting wildlife that you wouldn’t normally see from a game drive vehicle.

On a typical day at Khwai, we rise at sunrise and have breakfast, before setting off on our morning activity. Then we return to the guesthouse for lunch at noon and a rest, before the afternoon adventure departing at about 15h30 (depending on the season). The afternoon activity finishes in time for dinner back at the guest house. Khwai Guest House can arrange activities and safari experiences facilitated by experienced local guides that include:

  • 3-hour game drive in the Khwai Concession
  • 3-hour game drive in Moremi Game Reserve
  • 2.5-hour traditional dugout canoe ("mokoro") excursion
  • An optional night drive
  • Cultural Experience (±2 hours)
  • Full Day game drive (Khwai Concession and/or Moremi Game Reserve, subject to availability on arrival)

Day 7 to 8: Deception Valley Private Reserve, Dune Camp - Botswana

On day 7, you will be flown at a scheduled time to Deception Valley Private Reserve, the last destination of your Budget Botswana Safari. Spanning more than 43,000Ha of Kalahari Desert wilderness, Deception Valley Private Reserve offers spectacular game viewing experiences with hidden hides and designated water holes among natural pans and vegetated dunes.

For the next two nights, Dune Camp will be the base from which you explore this amazing valley. The camp allows you to experience and learn about the San Bushman culture indigenous to this area as part of a cultural exchange, adding a valuable human experience to your Kalahari stay by sharing intricate knowledge of their traditional way of life. Spend your time at Dune Camp on open-vehicle game drives viewing wildlife in the private reserve during the day with an optional night game drive, and experience a San trail and nature walk with the local Naru Tribe.

Your typical day at Dune Camp starts with waking up at sunrise for an early breakfast before embarking on your morning activity. Lunch is served at approximately noon after which you have some free time to enjoy before engaging in your afternoon activity around 15:30 or 16:00, depending on the season. Dinner is served from 19:30 -20:00 and after dinner, you have the option to experience a night game drive.

Due to its ideal location, Deception Valley Private Reserve offers unique safari experiences and activities:

  • 3-hour game drives (private game reserve)
  • Optional night game drive
  • San bushman walk (± 2 hours)
