An authentic Botswana Camping Safari offering extra comfort at an affordable price. This fully-serviced luxury camping safari takes you on an unforgettable adventure in the wildlife-rich Chobe National Park and Moremi Game Reserve. Explore different areas in two of Botswana’s most renowned wilderness areas on game drives, a boat cruise, and a mokoro safari, discovering an abundance of African wildlife, birds, and plants.
This 9-day Botswana Safari includes transport in custom open-sided safari vehicles, a light aircraft flight from Moremi to Maun, fully-serviced camping at pristine campsites along the Chobe River and in the Savute Marsh area of Chobe National Park, in the Khwai River Area and in the Xakanaxa (Third Bridge) area of Moremi Game Reserve. Your dedicated and experienced camp crew (a qualified guide, camp assistant, cook, and backup driver) takes care of all the chores, meal preparation, and logistics, so your participation is not required. Accommodation is in walk-in Meru tents fitted with comfortable beds, built-in floors, and mosquito netting.
Dumela (hello) and welcome to Botswana! When you arrive at Kasane Airport around noon your guide is there to greet you. From the airport, your guide drives you straight to the Chobe River for your first wildlife adventure. Arriving at the riverside your guide tells you more about what to expect on your camping safari experience while you enjoy a complimentary snack pack. Then you'll embark on an afternoon boat safari cruising along the Chobe River from Kasane. The safari boat cruise is perfect for birdwatching and spotting the abundance of wildlife of the Chobe River such as fish eagles, hippos, elephants, and buffalo herds.
We leave Kasane after the boat cruise and begin our journey to our campsite driving slowly at game drive pace, looking for wildlife and birds on our way. Our first two nights are spent camping at a pristine bush campsite near the Chobe River, from where we explore the riverbanks and surrounding flood plains on game drives. In the evening, relax around the campfire watching the African sunset while enjoying pre-dinner drinks before dining under the stars. At the end of the day, you fall asleep to the sounds of the African bush as the magic of a mobile camping experience sinks in. Enjoy a good night’s sleep, waking up refreshed and ready for the next exciting day on safari in Botswana.
Our Botswana Camping Safari continues as we head further south within Chobe National Park to Savute, where we set up camp at a pristine bush campsite for the next two nights. The Savute landscape and the character of the place can change dramatically depending on whether the Savute Channel is flowing or dried up. 2010 saw the water from the Savute River reach the Marsh for the first time in 30 years after a long dry period. Resident lions learned to prey on elephants drinking at isolated waterholes during this dry spell. It’s truly amazing what the absence or presence of water can do to transform the dynamics of the area. We spend our time here exploring this dry landscape on game drives. Savute is truly a region you have to experience for yourself as you never know what could happen next.
We start day five with an early breakfast before breaking camp and heading on to Khwai. The Khwai River forms the boundary between the local Khwai Community Area and the reserve. We stop to enjoy a bush picnic en route to our campsite in the Khwai River Area, where we will camp for the next two nights while exploring the Khwai floodplains on game drives. A highlight of our time here is a very slow relaxing 2.5-hour river safari in a traditional dug-out canoe, known as a mokoro. The quietness and slowness of the mokoro make for an unforgettable Botswana safari experience discovering channels and lagoons while spotting wildlife that you wouldn’t normally see from a game drive vehicle.
We set up camp for the next two nights in the Xakanaxa (Third Bridge) area of Moremi Game Reserve enjoying our last days on safari in Botswana and exploring the surrounding wilderness on game drives during the day.
The Moremi Game Reserve covers the Eastern corner of the Okavango Delta and protects around a third of the Okavango Delta ecosystem. This is about 5,000 km2 or 1,930 square miles. We have truly saved the best for last on your two final safari days, as the Okavango Delta is considered one of the world’s natural wonders and is a UNESCO Heritage area with a still pristine yet fragile and dynamic ecosystem, rich in wildlife like elephants, hippos, and buffalo, as well as endangered species like cheetah, lion, white rhinoceros, black rhinoceros and African wild dog, and a large variety of diverse birdlife, flora and fauna. The wildlife synchronizes its cycles with the annual seasonal flood of this unique ecosystem, making for a spectacular interaction between the wildlife and water.
On the last morning of your Botswana Camping Safari, you take a short game drive in Moremi Game Reserve after breakfast at camp. Then your guide drops you off at a bush airstrip and bids you farewell. Here you will meet your pilot, who will take you on a stunning scenic flight in a light aircraft over the Okavango Delta and Chief’s Island back to Maun, ending your wild Botswana safari experience with a breathtaking eagle-eye view of the ecosystem. Arrival in Maun is around noon, in time for your onward flight.
