Day 1: Maun to Moremi Game Reserve – Botswana

This Botswana Private Safari starts in Maun, near the Okavango Delta of Botswana. On the first morning, your private safari guide collects you from your pre-tour accommodation in Maun. From the safari hub of Maun, your guide drives you to our first mobile safari camp in Moremi Game Reserve.

By the time you arrive at the camp in Moremi, the crew has already set up the tents so everything is ready and waiting. All that's left for you to do is admire the wild surroundings and settle in.

Later in the afternoon, your guide takes you out on your first thrilling game drive in the renowned Moremi Game Reserve. The only official protected area in the Okavango Delta, Moremi is one of Botswana's finest wildlife havens. Sit back and enjoy this pristine wilderness area from the comfort of our open-sided 4x4 safari vehicle.

After our first exciting game drive in Botswana, we return to our small private camp overlooking the Xakanaxa Lagoon. Put your feet up and enjoy a drink around the campfire before tucking into a hearty dinner under the stars. At the end of your first eventful day on safari, retire to your spacious dome tent with an en-suite bathroom and fall asleep in your comfortable camping bed.

  • Accommodation: Mobile Safari Camp at Xakanaxa Lagoon in Moremi Game Reserve

Optional Okavango Delta Flight

At the start of this private Botswana Camping Safari, you can take an optional scenic flight (at extra cost) from Maun over the Okavango Delta to Moremi Game Reserve.

If you prefer not to spend a night staying in Maun before your safari, or simply want to kick your Botswana Safari off with a scenic flight over the Okavango Delta, this option can be pre-booked by arrangement. If you opt for the scenic Okavango Delta flight you need to arrive at the Maun Airport early on the first morning. Please note this is an optional activity, that is not included in the tour price.

Day 2 & 3: Moremi Game Reserve – Botswana

Wake up to the wild African bush at our mobile safari camp along the Xakanaxa Lagoon of the Khwai River. On days two and three of our eco-friendly Botswana Private Safari, we explore the beautiful Moremi Game Reserve in greater depth.

Start your days on safari in Moremi with tea and coffee around the campfire, before setting off on a morning game drive with your expert guide. In the mid-mornings, return to the mobile safari camp at Xakanaxa Lagoon for tasty brunches followed by free time. Spend time marveling at the wild environment of the camp, reading a book in the shade, or taking a power nap in your spacious tent.

In the afternoons, tea is served at camp, and then we embark on our afternoon game drives. Enjoy the feeling of being immersed in the untamed wilderness as we search for the wildlife and birds of Moremi in our open-sided 4x4 vehicle. As the daylight fades nocturnal animals begin to stir in the bush, among them the elusive leopard we may be lucky enough to see.

As night falls your professional guide drives you back to the mobile safari camp inside Moremi Game Reserve. Then it is time for a refreshing drink followed by dinner and laid-back evenings around the campfire, recounting your wildlife adventures in Moremi Game Reserve. At the end of the day, retreat to your spacious en-suite tent and fall asleep to the sounds of mother nature.

About Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana

Moremi is one of the most beautiful and diverse game reserves in Africa. About a third of the Okavango Delta falls within Moremi Game Reserve. This is the only official protected area in the Okavango Delta, proclaimed in the early 1960s.

Moremi Game Reserve is on the eastern side of the Okavango Delta, where land and water habitats meet. The game reserve thus incorporates a wide variety of terrains, including savannah grasslands, woodlands, waterways, lagoons, and islands. Its impressive diversity of habitats, in turn, supports a huge array of wildlife and bird species. This explains why Moremi reserve offers exceptional game viewing year-round.

This pristine game reserve is famous for its high concentration of endangered African wild dogs. And, Moremi is one of the best Big 5 safari destinations in Botswana. Elephants, buffalos, and lions are commonly sighted. Rhinos have been successfully reintroduced to parts of Moremi, but are rarely seen and leopards are relatively easy to spot here. Wildebeest, zebra, hippo, giraffe, and various antelope species are also found in abundance in Moremi. It is also an excellent place to see rare red lechwe and sitatunga antelopes, seldom seen elsewhere, as well as the unusual tsessebe, sable, and roan antelopes. Moremi's birdlife is prolific and includes over 400 species of birds.

Day 4: Moremi to Khwai Area – Botswana

On day four of this Botswana Private Safari, we move on to our second mobile safari camp. After breakfast at our camp in Moremi Game Reserve, we set off for the nearby Khwai area.

Today we embark on a morning and afternoon game drive in Moremi and the Khwai region. Along the way, we stop for a picnic lunch in the bush. By the time you arrive at the mobile safari camp in the Khwai area, everything has been set up for you already. You are not required to help take down camp, move it or set it up in its new location. Simply arrive and settle into your tent and the new mobile safari camp set up by the crew.

At the end of another fulfilling day on safari in Botswana, relax around the campfire and tuck into a delicious al fresco dinner.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Mobile Camping at Khwai Camp

Day 5 & 6: Khwai Area – Botswana

Days five and six of our eco-friendly Botswana Safari are dedicated to game viewing in the Khwai region.

Our days in Khwai follow a similar rhythm to before. A typical day, starts with an early morning tea or coffee, before heading out on a game drive in the open-sided 4x4 safari vehicle.

After watching the various animals and birds we encounter in the wild we return to our mobile safari camp for a well-deserved brunch and a rest. Our leisure time at the camp is followed by afternoon tea and a late afternoon game drive in the Khwai area. Sandwiched between Chobe and Moremi, the unfenced Khwai area is known for its superb wildlife sightings year-round.

On one of our days in the Khwai region, we set off on a mokoro (canoe) trip. This unforgettable mokoro excursion replaces one of our 4x4 game drives. The mokoro is a traditional dug-out canoe used to get around in the watery delta region. On our mokoro trip, local guides stand in the back of the canoes and pole us along the waterways and lagoons in a similar fashion to Venetian gondoliers. Mekoros are the ideal vessels for water-based game viewing and exploring the tranquil channels of the wild delta region in Botswana.

In the evenings we return to the mobile camp for dinner and drinks around the campfire. At the end of your adventure-packed days in the bush, your comfortable tent awaits. Enjoy the added privacy and convenience of an en-suite bathroom with a warm bucket shower and bush toilet, throughout your Botswana Private Safari.

  • Meals: Brunch, Afternoon Tea & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Mobile Camping at Khwai Camp in the Moremi Region

About Khwai Concession Area in Botswana

The Khwai area is known for its outstanding game viewing. It is nestled between Moremi and Chobe Park, on the edge of the Okavango Delta. Due to this prime location–with no fences separating Khwai, Moremi, and Chobe–an abundance of varied wildlife moves through the area.

The Khwai wildlife area is made up of the Khwai Community Concession and the Khwai Private Reserve. Together these parks cover about 200,000 ha (494 210 ac) of Botswana wilderness. This Private Botswana Safari explores the Khwai Community Concession, along the Khwai River. Going on safari in the Khwai Concession directly benefits the local community that owns and manages the reserve, and thus supports wildlife conservation in Botswana.

One of the best places to see African wild dogs in Botswana, Khwai is an excellent place to see predators. These include lions, leopards, and hyenas. The Khwai River and floodplains host plenty of hippos, crocodiles, and antelopes like waterbuck and lechwe. In the wooded and grassland areas zebras, buffalos, giraffes, roan, and sable are abundant. Elephants are commonly sighted too. The Khwai area also offers exceptional birdwatching with its rich and diverse birdlife. Many aquatic species can be seen here, especially in the wet season. Bird sightings include eagles, cranes, egrets, vultures, storks (saddle-billed and marabou), and lilac-breasted rollers.

Day 7: Khwai to Savuti in Chobe National Park – Botswana

Today our Botswana Camping Safari takes us from the Khwai area to Savuti Marsh. After breakfast around the campfire, it is time to pack our bags and head back out into the bush.

The bulk of day seven of our mobile camping trip is spent exploring the famous Savuti Marsh in Chobe National Park. At lunchtime, we pause for a picnic out in this remote part of Chobe Park. Then we continue our search for the large predators, elephant bulls, and other mammals Savuti is famous for worldwide.

Our exciting 4x4 game drive ends at our next mobile safari camp in Savuti late this afternoon. As with all of the mobile camps on this Botswana Private Safari, our Savuti camp is set up and ready for you by the time you arrive. Simply, head to the campfire and settle in for dinner and drinks under the stars.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Mobile Savuti Camp in Chobe Park

Day 8 & 9: Savuti in Chobe National Park – Botswana

The next two days of our mobile camping safari are set aside for game viewing in the Savuti Marsh area of Botswana.

Our days in Savuti follow a similar pattern to before. Mornings typically start with tea and coffee around the campfire followed by a guided game drive. Then, we return to the mobile safari camp for brunch, a siesta, and afternoon tea, followed by a late afternoon game drive. Top your days off with hearty dinners under the stars and chilled drinks around the campfire.

Your expert safari guide takes you in search of the remarkable wildlife of Savuti (aka Savute) in open 4x4 safari vehicles, sharing insights and interesting facts along the way. As at the previous mobile safari camps in Botswana, you'll sleep in a spacious tent equipped with comfy twin beds. The camping beds are fitted with mattresses complete with bedding, linen, and pillows for added comfort.

The safari crew takes care of all the camp chores and logistics throughout your Botswana Private Safari, leaving you to simply enjoy being in the African wilderness.

About Savuti Marsh in Chobe National Park

The Savuti Marsh is a legendary, yet remote part of Chobe National Park. This northern region of Chobe, next to Linyanti, and Moremi, sees fewer visitors than the riverfront area.

Savuti hosts a high concentration of wildlife and is renowned for its predator and elephant sightings. In particular, the area is known for dramatic clashes between lions and spotted hyenas. The lions of the Savuti Channel are famous for hunting elephants! When the mysterious Savuti Channel dried up in the past (for decades at a time) and food became scarce, the resident lion prides survived by taking down elephants, as well as buffalos and giraffes.

The Savuti Channel meanders through the ancient Gubatsa Hills to the floodplains of the Savuti Marsh which teems with wildlife. It is an outstanding safari destination year-round. In summer (November/December) the rains arrive and the vegetation flourishes. Thousands of migrating zebras are drawn to the area, followed by lions and other hungry predators. This is also the peak birding season when masses of migrant birds move in, from Abdim's storks to carmine bee-eaters. The rainy season is also when baby antelopes abound. Winter, on the other hand, drives the animals to gather at the dwindling water and food sources, and predator action intensifies.

Day 10: Savuti to Chobe River in Chobe Park – Botswana

On day 10 we head to the final mobile safari camp of our eco-friendly Botswana Camping Safari. This time, the crew sets up camp near the Chobe River in Chobe National Park.

Spend the day on an exhilarating 4x4 safari in Chobe Park, breaking for a picnic lunch en route. Early this evening you'll arrive at your next Botswana safari camp where a welcoming campfire and refreshing drinks await. Simply ease into African time and unwind out in the unspoiled bush.

At the close of another remarkable day on this Botswana Private Safari, fall asleep to the wild calls of Africa, comfortably ensconced in your cozy en-suite tent.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Mobile Chobe Safari Camp

Day 11 & 12: Chobe River in Chobe National Park – Botswana

Enjoy two full days of diverse game viewing in Botswana's leading national park, Chobe.

We spend the last two nights of this low-impact Botswana Safari camping in the Chobe Riverfront area of Chobe National Park. As before, your mobile safari camp is located in a scenic spot in the Botswana wilderness. This enables you to immerse yourself in the wilderness and experience an authentic African bush adventure.

A boat cruise on the Chobe River is included on one of your two full days in Chobe. The Chobe National Park is famous for its game viewing boat cruises. The boat cruises are ideal for admiring the scenery, watching birds, and even spotting animals along the river. The Chobe boat cruise replaces one of your game drives on day 11 or 12 of this Botswana Private Safari.

In Chobe, the daily program is similar to before with two safari activities a day. In between, we return to the mobile camp near Chobe River for meals and free time.

  • Meals: Brunch, Afternoon Tea & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Mobile Chobe Safari Camp

About Chobe National Park in Botswana

Botswana's top national park, Chobe National Park is famous for its huge elephant population, hosting one of the highest concentrations of elephants in Africa. It is also known for its large buffalo herds. These two Big 5 mammal species, and a multitude of other animals and birds, are drawn to the Chobe River. Especially in the dry season, as the Chobe River is the only permanent water source in the region. The Chobe Riverfront (or Serondela floodplains), boasts some of the highest wildlife concentrations in Africa.

Chobe Park is also home to lions and leopards, with rhinos being the only Big Five animal absent. Other predators include cheetahs, hyenas, and African wild dogs. Herds of Burchell's zebras are commonly seen, as are giraffes and various antelope species. Chobe is the best place in Africa for boat-based game viewing. The Chobe River is a magnet for a diverse array of birds and animals. Birdlife is prolific in the rainy season with over 450 species recorded, including the iconic African eagle. Besides wallowing hippos and lurking crocodiles, a boat cruise on the Chobe River showcases the stunning scenery of Chobe Park.

Day 13: Chobe to Kasane, Botswana

The final day of your Botswana Private Safari begins with a fresh coffee or tea at the safari camp in Chobe. Then you venture back out into the bush on a final 4x4 game drive.

After your last game drive in Chobe National Park, return to the mobile safari camp for brunch. Then it is time to pack up and say goodbye to the African bush.

This afternoon your private guide drives you from Chobe Park to Kasane, the final stop on your unforgettable Botswana Camping Safari.
