Immerse yourself in the African wilderness on this eco-friendly Botswana Private Safari to the Okavango Delta, Moremi, Khwai, and Chobe Park. This fly-in camping safari offers an authentic Botswana wildlife and bush adventure for small private safari groups.
A fully-serviced camping safari staying at a comfortable tented camp and private mobile safari camps in top Botswana wildlife areas. Simply savor being out in the wild African bush while the camp crew takes care of everything.
Please note that this private safari is a sample itinerary based on the best routes. The tour program is flexible and is often adapted to ensure the best safari experience. This Botswana Private Safari itinerary can be tailored to suit individual preferences on request.
This fly-in Botswana Private Safari begins in Maun, where you are collected by Delta Air for your scenic flight into the Okavango Delta. Arriving at the camp's airstrip your private safari guide is there to meet you and take you to the tented camp.
For the duration of your stay in the Okavango Delta, you are assigned a personal guide (shared between two guests at most).
The first three nights of our private Botswana Safari are spent at Oddballs Camp in the heart of the Okavango Delta. This remote tented camp is only accessible by plane and serves as our base for exploring the delta. Oddball's safari camp is set on the edge of Chief's Island, the largest of the delta islands, bordering the world-famous Moremi Game Reserve. It's the perfect place to begin your once-in-a-lifetime wilderness adventure in Botswana!
Settle in and enjoy your first dinner out in nature at the laid-back safari camp this evening. At Oddballs Camp you stay in a spacious walk-in tent with a semi-detached en-suite bathroom. Your comfortable canvas room, fitted with a double bed (or two twin beds) is set on a raised wooden platform offering views over the bush.
The first two full days of our Botswana Private Safari are set aside for exploring the wild Okavango Delta.
Your private safari guide takes you out on canoe trips in his own hand-crafted dugout mokoro. The mokoro excursions are conducted in wooden dugout mekoro, not plastic replicas. Mekoro are the non-motorized vessels traditionally used to navigate the narrow maze of waterways and estuaries in the delta. On the mokoro rides your guide stands in the stern (back) and propels two passengers through the waters using a long pole - the African version of the Venetian gondolier.
Mokoro rides are the ideal way to experience the delta and encounter wildlife and birds – moving slowly, effortlessly, and quietly through the bush. Sit back and take in the unique ecosystems of the delta as we explore the intricate network of winding channels, peaceful lagoons, and reed-dotted islets by mokoro. As you glide along the secluded waterways in a mokoro you can truly lose yourself in the beauty of this untouched wilderness area.
Your experienced guides also lead you on bush walks on Chief's Island. On your nature walks you get to take a closer look at the fascinating creatures and plants of this remarkable wetland ecosystem. As you walk your guide helps you to spot wildlife and tune into the finer details of the delta. Along the way, your knowledgeable guide tells you more about the marvels of one of Africa's last truly wild places.
Your guide is a born-and-bred local who knows this part of the Okavango Delta inside out. The camp guides come from Sedibana village, located near the camp, and are descendants of the baYei tribe which moved into the delta in the late 1700s with their mekoro. While in the delta, you can take a cultural outing with your guide to see the locals' simple way of life in this beautiful place. Here you may meet the chief, the elders, and even the family of your guide. You have the chance to buy some local crafts in Sedibana, where the women are known for their basket weaving.
Back at the safari camp, hearty meals are served out on the spacious deck areas where you can keep an eye out for wildlife and birds. At the end of your days in the wild delta, put your feet up and admire the beautiful sunsets over the bush.
Oddballs is a small, intimate tented camp where guests are immersed in the wild delta environment.
At this charming Botswana safari camp, you stay in one of the 14 large walk-in tents on raised wooden platforms. Each well-equipped tent features a semi-detached en-suite bathroom with an open-air, yet private bucket shower that has cold and hot running water. The comfortable tents are set on raised wooden platforms with viewing decks where you can sit back and soak up the pristine African bush.
This remote tented camp features elevated decks with bar and lounge areas opening out onto the bush and campfire so that guests can enjoy the dreamy views in comfort and style. Sitting on one of the decks of Oddballs' you look out over the delta grasslands and untamed woodlands beyond, catching sight of birds and even wildlife nearby. The dining room overlooks the Boro Channel, Chief’s Island, and Moremi Game Reserve beyond. Your evenings can be spent relaxing around the open campfire or in the social lounge and bar areas, where you can get to know your fellow guests.
One of the best things about this secluded safari camp is its simplicity. It offers a genuine back-to-nature experience in a beautiful location deep within the Okavango Delta. This family-friendly safari camp uses solar power to generate electricity and wherever possible to heat water too. Oddballs' Camp offers a down-to-earth safari experience with private guides from the area and no motorized activities. The focus here is on slowing down and appreciating this magnificent wilderness setting and its wild inhabitants.
Day four of our Botswana Private Safari starts with a final breakfast at our remote camp in the delta. Then it is time to pack your bags and say farewell to your local guides and Chief's Island. Leaving Oddball's Camp, we head to the nearby Moremi Game Reserve.
Keep an eye out for wildlife and birds en route to our first mobile safari camp in the heart of Moremi. Arriving at Xakanaxa Lagoon the mobile camp is set up and ready for you to make yourself at home. Settle into your spacious dome tent with its own en-suite bathroom and small patio area with camping chairs.
In the late afternoon, we set off on the first 4x4 game drive of our camping safari. Your professional guide takes you into the renowned Moremi Game Reserve of Botswana in your private safari vehicle. Get ready to see an array of wildlife on this thrilling 4x4 game drive!
After your first exhilarating game drive, we return to the mobile safari camp in Moremi for dinner and a laid-back evening around the campfire. At the end of the day, fall asleep in your comfortable camping bed as you listen to the sounds of the African bush.
Wake up to the game-rich African bush at our mobile safari camp inside Moremi Game Reserve on day five of this Botswana Private Safari. Start your day with tea and coffee around the campfire, before setting off on a morning game drive inside Moremi Game Reserve.
Return to the mobile safari camp at Xakanaxa for a hearty brunch followed by a refreshing nap in your spacious tent. In the afternoon, tea is served at the eco-friendly camp and then we embark on our second 4x4 game drive of the day. Your private safari guide takes you in search of the wildlife Moremi is famous for, telling you more about this ecosystem as you explore.
In the evening we head back to the mobile safari camp in Moremi Game Reserve. Unwind around the campfire where dinner and drinks are served, before retreating to your spacious en-suite tent for a good night's sleep.
Moremi Game Reserve is one of the most beautiful and diverse wildlife parks in Africa. It is the only official protected area in the Okavango Delta. Proclaimed in the early 1960s, Moremi encompasses about a third of the Okavango Delta.
The Moremi Game Reserve is located on the eastern side of the Okavango Delta, where land and water habitats meet. The game reserve thus incorporates a wide variety of terrains, including savannah grasslands, woodlands, waterways, lagoons, and islands. Its impressive diversity of ecosystems, in turn, supports a wide variety of wildlife and bird species. Thus Moremi offers exceptional game viewing throughout the year.
This pristine game reserve is famous for its high concentration of endangered African wild dogs. It is also one of the best Big 5 game reserves in Botswana. Elephants, buffalos, and lions are commonly sighted. Rhinos have been successfully reintroduced to parts of Moremi, although they are rarely seen and leopards are relatively easy to spot here. Wildebeest, zebra, hippo, giraffe, and various antelope species are also found in abundance in Moremi. This is also an excellent wilderness area for sighting rare red lechwe and sitatunga antelopes, which are seldom seen elsewhere. Other unusual antelope species include tsessebe, sable, and roan antelopes. The birdlife in Moremi is prolific and includes over 400 species.
On day six of our Botswana Private Safari, we have breakfast at the camp in Moremi and get ready to move on to our second mobile safari camp. Once your bags are packed we hop back into our 4x4 safari vehicle and set off for the Khwai area, near Moremi Game Reserve.
Most of the day is spent on 4x4 game drives in Moremi Game Reserve and the Khwai region. Along the way, we will stop for a picnic lunch out in the Botswana wilderness. By the time you arrive at the next mobile safari camp with your private guide, everything has been set up for you already. You are not required to help take down the mobile camps, move them or set up in the new bush locations. Simply arrive and settle into your en-suite tent and the new mobile safari camp in the Khwai area.
At the end of another rewarding day on safari in Botswana, relax around the campfire and tuck into a tasty dinner under the stars.
Day seven of our eco-friendly Botswana Private Safari is dedicated to exploring the Khwai wildlife region of northern Botswana.
Today follows a similar rhythm to our full day on safari in Moremi Game Reserve. Start the day with an early morning tea or coffee, before taking a game drive in the open-sided 4x4 safari vehicle. Then, return to our mobile safari camp for brunch and a rest, followed by afternoon tea. In the late afternoon embark on a mokoro canoe trip in the Khwai concession area.
On our mokoro trip, local guides stand in the back of the dug-out mekoro and pole us along the waterways and lagoons of Khwai. This unforgettable mokoro excursion replaces either the morning or afternoon game drive on day seven. Sit back and soak up the scenery, keeping an eye out for the abundant wildlife found in the Khwai area, bordering Moremi.
In the evening we return to camp for dinner and drinks around the campfire. Then, retire to your comfortable tent for a well-deserved sleep out in the African bush. The tents have en-suite bathrooms with warm bucket showers and bush toilets for added convenience and privacy.
The Khwai area is known for its outstanding game viewing. It is nestled between Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park, on the edge of the Okavango Delta. Due to this prime location–with no fences separating Khwai, Moremi, and Chobe–an abundance of varied wildlife moves through the area.
The Khwai area consists of the Khwai Community Concession and the Khwai Private Reserve. Together these parks cover about 200,000 ha (494 210 ac) of Botswana wilderness. This Botswana Private Safari explores the Khwai Community Concession, along the Khwai River. Going on safari in the Khwai Concession directly benefits the local community that owns and manages the reserve, and thus supports wildlife conservation in Botswana.
One of the best places to see African wild dogs in Botswana, Khwai is an excellent place to watch predators in the wild. These include lions, leopards, and hyenas. The Khwai River and floodplains host plenty of hippos, crocodiles, and antelopes like waterbuck and lechwe. In the wooded and grassland areas zebras, buffalos, giraffes, roan, and sable are abundant. Elephants are commonly sighted too. The Khwai area also offers exceptional birdwatching with its rich and diverse birdlife. Many aquatic species can be seen here, especially in the rainy season. Bird sightings include eagles, cranes, egrets, vultures, storks (saddle-billed and marabou), and lilac-breasted rollers.
Today our private Botswana Safari takes us from the Khwai area to Savuti. After breakfast around the campfire, it is time to head back out into the game-rich bush.
The bulk of day eight is spent exploring the famous Savuti Marsh area of Chobe National Park. At lunchtime, we pause for a picnic out in this remote part of Chobe Park. Then we continue our search for the large predators, elephant bulls, and other mammals Savuti is famous for.
Our rewarding 4x4 game drive ends later this afternoon at our next mobile safari camp. For the next three nights of our Botswana Private Safari, we camp in Savuti. As with all of the mobile camps on this private camping safari, our mobile Savuti camp is set up and ready for you by the time you arrive. Simply, head to the campfire and settle in for dinner and drinks out in the wilderness.
The next two days of our mobile camping safari are set aside for game viewing in the wild Savuti Channel and Marsh areas of Botswana.
Our days follow a similar program to before, starting with tea and coffee around the fire followed by a guided game drive. Then, return to the safari camp for brunch, a siesta, and afternoon tea, before embarking on a late afternoon game drive in Savuti. End your days off with dinner and drinks around the open fire at our mobile safari camp in Savuti (also called Savute).
Your expert safari guide takes you in search of the remarkable wildlife of Savuti in open-sided 4x4 safari vehicles, sharing wildlife tales and interesting facts along the way. As at the previous mobile safari camps in Botswana, you'll sleep in a spacious tent equipped with comfy twin beds and camping furniture. The beds are fitted with mattresses complete with bedding, linen, and pillows for added comfort.
The camp crew prepares a hearty meal and serves dinner and drinks around the campfire, as is customary on this Botswana Private Safari.
The Savuti Marsh is a legendary, yet remote part of Chobe National Park. This northern region of Chobe, next to Linyanti, and Moremi, sees fewer visitors than the riverfront area.
Savuti hosts a high concentration of wildlife and is renowned for its predator and elephant sightings. This area is known for dramatic clashes between lions and spotted hyenas, in particular. When the mysterious Savuti Channel dried up in the past (for decades at a time) and food became scarce, the resident lion prides survived by hunting elephants, as well as buffalos and giraffes!
The Savuti Channel meanders through the ancient Gubatsa Hills to the floodplains of the Savuti Marsh which teems with wildlife. It is an outstanding safari destination year-round. In summer (November/December) the rains arrive and the vegetation flourishes. Thousands of migrating zebras are drawn to the area, followed by lions and other hungry predators. This is also the peak birding season when masses of migrant birds move in, from Abdim's storks to carmine bee-eaters. The wet season is also when baby antelopes abound. Winter, on the other hand, drives the animals to gather at the dwindling water and food sources, and predator action intensifies.
On day 11 we head to the final mobile safari camp of our eco-friendly Botswana Private Safari. This time, the crew sets up a bush camp near the Chobe River in Chobe National Park.
Spend most of the day on a thrilling 4x4 game drive in the Chobe River region of Chobe Park, breaking for a picnic lunch along the way. Early this evening you'll arrive at your next Botswana safari camp where a welcoming campfire and refreshing drinks await. We spend the next two nights of this low-impact camping safari in the Chobe Riverfront area of Chobe National Park.
At the close of another action-packed day on safari in Botswana, return to your en-suite tent for a sound sleep.
Enjoy a full day of diverse game viewing in Chobe, Botswana's premier national park. After an early morning tea or coffee, head out on a 4x4 game drive in the scenic Chobe National Park with your private guide.
Return to the mobile camp for brunch and a break during the heat of the day. In the afternoon, after tea, take a boat cruise on the Chobe River instead of a game drive. Chobe Park is famous for its boat cruises which are ideal for admiring the scenery, watching birds, and even sighting animals along the river.
As before, your mobile safari camp is set in a scenic location deep in the Botswana wilderness. This enables you to immerse yourself in the wilderness and enjoy an authentic African bush experience.
Otherwise, the daily program is similar to before–two safari activities a day with meals and a rest back at the mobile safari camp in Chobe National Park.
Botswana's top national park, Chobe is famous for its huge elephant population, hosting one of the highest concentrations of elephants in Africa. It is also known for its large buffalo herds. These two Big 5 mammal species, and a multitude of other animals and birds, are drawn to the Chobe River. Especially in the dry season, as the Chobe River is the only permanent water source in the region. The Chobe Riverfront (or Serondela floodplains), boasts some of the highest wildlife concentrations in Africa.
Chobe Park is also home to lions and leopards, with rhinos being the only Big Five animal absent. Other predators include cheetahs, hyenas, and African wild dogs. Herds of Burchell's zebras are commonly seen, as are giraffes and various antelope species. Chobe is one of the best places in Africa for boat-based game viewing. The Chobe River is a magnet for a diverse array of birds and animals. Birdlife is prolific in the rainy season with over 450 species recorded, including the iconic African eagle. Besides wallowing hippos and lurking crocodiles, a boat cruise on the Chobe River showcases the stunning scenery of Chobe Park.
Start the last day of your Botswana Private Safari with fresh coffee and tea at our mobile camp in Chobe Park. Then venture back out into the wildlife-rich bush on a final 4x4 game drive.
After your last game drive in Chobe National Park, return to the mobile safari camp for brunch. Then it is time to pack up and say goodbye to the African bush.
This afternoon your guide will drive you from Chobe to the nearby town of Kasane, the final stop on your unforgettable Botswana Camping Safari.
