The open plains and rolling hills of Masai Mara are home to a plethora of free-roaming wild animals, a number of which we are sure to spot on our game drive. Keep your eyes peeled for the Big Five of Africa (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo) as we explore one of Africa's most legendary game reserves. Day 3: Masai Mara Safari – Kenya

Starting early this morning we spend the whole of day three exploring Masai Mara Reserve. Set off across the unspoiled plains in search of Africa's wild animals, taking in the epic safari landscapes as we explore.

Kenya's leading safari destination is renowned for its sizeable big cat populations, offering exceptional cheetah, lion, and leopard sightings. In addition to its plentiful feline predators, Masai Mara is also famous for the Great Migration, also known as the Wildebeest Migration which takes place annually. We may get to witness massive Nile crocodiles snapping up herbivores as they attempt river crossings, especially during the Great Migration when around two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles are on the move. Masai Mara is, however, an outstanding safari destination year-round so keep your cameras ready and your eyes open for wildlife action. This is after all the place for that quintessential African scene of acacia trees with grazing giraffes, wildebeest, zebras, and elephants.

Today you have the chance to take an optional hot air balloon safari over the plains of Masai Mara, viewing the wilderness and its roaming wildlife from above.

  • Included Activities: Full-day Masai Mara Safari

On day four of our Kenya Safari & Uganda Gorilla Trekking Tour, we say goodbye to majestic Masai Mara and drive northeast to Lake Nakuru. One of the Great Rift Valley lakes, Lake Nakuru is surrounded by a wildlife-rich protected area of the same name.

Along the way, we stop for lunch at the Ubuntu Cafe, a local community initiative where organic local food is served in support of social upliftment. After our tasty lunch, we continue to Lake Nakuru and embark on an afternoon game drive in our adventure vehicle.

Lake Nakuru National Park covers a variety of habitats and thus hosts diverse wild animals and birds. Chances of spotting endangered black rhinos are excellent here and the unusual tree-climbing lions are also a highlight. Watch for buffalos, giraffes, antelopes, hyenas, and possibly even shy leopards. Lake Nakuru attracts plenty of waterbirds making this park a birding hotspot, with over 400 bird species recorded. Day 8: Bwindi Forest Gorilla Trekking - Uganda

The big day has arrived - time to go African mountain gorilla trekking in Uganda! One of the most magical and rare wildlife experiences in the world, trekking the gorillas in the wild is undoubtedly the highlight of our African safari.

We trek through the rainforest for up to six hours, depending on where the gorilla family groups are at the time. Uganda is home to almost half of the mountain gorillas surviving in the wild today, with the bulk of Uganda's gorillas living in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Once we have located a gorilla family we spend about an hour watching them at close range - an unforgettable wildlife encounter! See how these intelligent and social primates groom each other, feed, play, and interact in their natural environment.

Ugandan park authorities allow a maximum of eight people per gorilla trek, so our safari group will be split into smaller groups for gorilla trekking, possibly tracking on different days. Also, our guided Uganda gorilla trekking tour may take place tomorrow, depending on our permits, but either way, we spend a full day trekking these endangered primates on foot.

  • Included Activity: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Park
  • Accommodation: Overland Camp at Lake Bunyonyi
  • Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 9: Lake Bunyonyi or Gorilla Trekking - Uganda

Wildebeest Great Migration Explained

Please note that the Wildebeest Great Migration is seasonal. As a natural wildlife phenomenon, it is fluid and unpredictable. For this reason, seeing the Great Migration cannot be guaranteed.

The wildebeest and other wild herbivores migrate between Masai Mara in Kenya and Serengeti in Tanzania. These herds move in a massive circular route covering some 1200 miles (1931km). It is a continuous movement of wildlife that can be seen in different areas at different times of the year. During certain phases of this annual trek, the animals disperse or slow down, whilst at other times the migration picks up speed, with the herds becoming larger and denser. Not only does the Wildebeest Great Migration vary from place to place and season to season but the movement of these large wildlife herds varies from year to year.

Please talk to a travel expert from African Budget Safaris about seeing the Wildebeest Great Migration on your safari to find out more. Also, check out our detailed article about the Great Migration in Serengeti and Masai Mara.
