A very affordable accommodated safari combining one of Tanzania's best wildlife destinations with its premier beach destination!
Our Tanzania Game Parks & Zanzibar Safari departs from Nairobi, the bustling capital of Kenya, driving south across the border into Tanzania. On our way to Arusha, we may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain.
Greet the friendly locals with a "saitaa" in the lively town of Arusha - a good place to visit local markets and get a taste of Tanzanian life. Arusha is located at the base of Mount Meru, Africa's fifth highest peak. This growing town is set in an area of Tanzania that has a cool climate and features lush green hills. Arusha is the gateway to the Northern Safari Circuit in Tanzania, which includes the world-famous Serengeti Park and Ngorongoro Crater Area.
From Arusha, you have the option of embarking on a three-night Serengeti Camping Trip at extra cost. This evening our local guide briefs those taking the Upgraded Serengeti Trip and there is time to pack for your upcoming wildlife adventure in the legendary Serengeti National Park.
An optional Activity Package is offered with this safari. The extra payment includes highly-recommended activities, considered "essential activities" on the tour. This itinerary includes these activities. Contact African Budget Safaris for a detailed breakdown of what is included in the Activity Package. See the Full Pricing Information above for the cost of the Activity Package.
On day two we leave Arusha and drive to Karatu, in the Ngorongoro Highlands area. This busy small town lies between Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater serving as our base for exploring the Northern Safari Circuit.
Once in Karatu, your guide will tell you more about our full day trip to the renowned Ngorongoro Crater, planned for the following day.
Please note: Those taking the Upgraded Serengeti Camping Trip will head off this morning from Arusha and rejoin the group on day five.
Rise and shine early this morning for an action-packed day of 4x4 game viewing in the Ngorongoro Crater.
You are collected from the camp and set off for the Crater where most of your day is spent exploring. The Ngorongoro Crater hosts one of the densest large animal populations in Africa offering superb wildlife viewing. Members of most of Africa's large mammal species are found roaming freely in the crater so a wide range of wild animals is usually spotted on the day trip.
After a memorable day of wildlife viewing in the Crater, we ascend to the rim and return to Karatu.
Day four is set aside for optional activities and free time to take it easy at camp. You can explore on your own, walking around the town or visiting nearby villages to experience rural life in Tanzania. A cultural tour of Karatu is included today for those wanting to join.
Day trips to the scenic Lake Manyara National Park are another popular option. Optional game viewing and cultural activities need to be booked at the camp directly when we arrive in Karatu.
Today we return to Arusha where we meet up with the group members returning from the Serengeti Camping Trip upgrade.
This evening we exchange stories of the various incredible wildlife adventures we enjoyed over the past few days on Tanzania's Northern Safari Circuit.
Next, our accommodated budget safari takes us to coastal Bagamoyo, founded in the late 1700's.
Today dhow sailing boats are built here and the town offers insight into the history of Tanzania, particularly the 19th century when it was a major trading post. The name Bagamoyo means “lay down your heart” and dates back to the active slave trading days in East Africa. The history of Bagamoyo includes interesting German colonial, Swahili, Arabic and Christian missionary influences.
Arriving in the vibrant town we head to our next overnight lodge, located along the Bagamoyo beach. The remainder of the afternoon is free for you to swim in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, walk on the beach and enjoy the sea views at sunset. This evening we get ready for our Zanzibar Island Trip, kicking off the next day.
On the morning of day seven, we are up early for our journey to Zanzibar Islands. Leaving Bagamoyo we drive to Dar es Salaam, the largest city on the East Coast of Africa.
A local ferry takes us from Dar es Salaam to Stone Town, the capital of Zanzibar Island. From Stone Town, we transfer to Nungwi Beach on the northern shores of the main island, where we spend our time relaxing on the white-sand beaches. On our way north we stop to visit the spice plantations of Kidichi and Kizambani. Experiencing the tastes, colours and smells of the exotic spices is a must in Zanzibar, which is known as 'the Spice Islands'.
At Nungwi Beach, there are various watersports and ocean activities available, from snorkelling to scuba diving and sailing. Explore the islands on guided trips or rent a scooter and set off on your own. Zanzibar Island is an idyllic tropical beach destination, so unwind in paradise and go swimming in the clear, Indian Ocean waters.
We spend our last night on Zanzibar Island near Stone Town, once a major port on the slave and spice trade routes.
Spend the last morning of your safari exploring historical Stone Town to experience the colourful mix of cultures and blend of architectural styles in this diverse town. Walk along the cobbled lanes and take in the vibrant atmosphere of the town, visit local markets and sample the fresh seafood.
This afternoon we leave the beach paradise of Zanzibar Island feeling relaxed and refreshed. Arriving back in Dar es Salaam our Tanzania Wildlife and Zanzibar Beach adventure comes to an end. Tonight your group may choose to meet up for an optional post-safari dinner in lively Dar es Salaam.
You can do this budget East African Safari in the reverse order - Zanzibar & Tanzanian Game Parks Safari (North), if you prefer to start in Tanzania's Dar es Salaam and end in Nairobi, Kenya.
