Itinerary for this Tour

Day 1: Nairobi – Kenya

This Kenya Safari for Seniors starts in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. Your guide meets you at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi when you arrive and transfers you to your first overnight hotel.

The remainder of the day is free for you to rest at the comfortable hotel or explore the vibrant city of Nairobi. There are plenty of things to do in Nairobi if you feel like exploring. Visit one of the animal sanctuaries, sample Kenyan coffee at a local cafe, or walk in Karura Forest. Alternatively, simply unwind at the hotel which has a large swimming pool.

Tonight you can dine at the famous Carnivore Restaurant located on the hotel grounds or eat out in the city.

  • Accommodation: Nairobi hotel
  • Meals included: None

Day 2: Nairobi Activities – Kenya

Today our Senior Safari in Kenya embarks on two of the best Nairobi activities. This morning you are collected from the hotel at 09h00 for your first excursion - a trip to the famous Giraffe Centre in Nairobi.

The Nairobi Giraffe Center officially called the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW) is a non-profit organization established to protect endangered Rothschild Giraffes. It was founded in 1979 by the late Jock Leslie-Melville, a British-born Kenyan citizen, and his American wife Betty Leslie-Melville. The breeding center has played a key role in giraffe conservation in Kenya. Today it supports and runs conservation and education programs across Kenya. During our visit, you get to see the giraffes up close, from the raised viewing platform, and may even get to feed them - an unforgettable wildlife experience.

Next, we visit the famous David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage in Nairobi. Here you'll get up close to rescued elephant calves. These are baby elephants that lost their mothers to poaching and other tragedies and would not have survived in the wild. Seeing the baby elephants being cared for and rehabilitated for release back into the wild is a heartwarming experience. The Nairobi elephant orphanage is based at the home of the SWT's founder, Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick. The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) is one of the oldest wildlife organizations in Africa and a leader in conservation. They have been saving elephants and rhinos in Kenya for over 40 years. They also protect critical habitats, fund anti-poaching efforts, and raise awareness about wildlife conservation across Kenya.

After seeing giraffes and baby elephants up close we return to our hotel in Nairobi and spend the rest of the day at leisure. Tonight you have another chance to experience the famous cuisine of the carnivore restaurant or dine out in Nairobi.

  • Accommodation: Nairobi hotel
  • Activities: Nairobi Giraffe Sanctuary & Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage
  • Included Meals: Breakfast

Day 3: Nairobi to Ol Pejeta Conservancy – Kenya

On day three of our Kenya Safari, you are collected from the hotel early in the morning. First, your guide tells you more about the safari adventures ahead, then we leave Nairobi and travel north to Ol Pejeta Conservancy. The journey takes about four hours, making it the longest drive on our senior trip.

This 364km² (141mi²) wildlife conservancy lies in the foothills of Mount Kenya and the Aberdare mountains. Ol Pejeta Conservancy is home to a high concentration of wildlife, hosting over 10,000 big mammals. This is the home of Africa's fastest-growing rhino population, including black and white rhinos, as well as the last northern white rhinos in the world. It's also the only game reserve in Kenya where the Big 5 of Africa and chimpanzees are found.

This afternoon we visit the Sweetwaters Game Reserve and Chimpanzee Sanctuary at Ol Pejeta. The chimpanzee sanctuary was established by the Jane Goodall Institue, Kenya Wildlife Services, and Lonrho East Africa, to provide a natural haven for rescued chimpanzees. Enjoy the spectacular views of Mount Kenya and keep your eyes peeled for rhinos, African wild dogs, and more. After seeing chimpanzees and other wildlife in Sweetwaters we head to our tented camp. Settle in at the comfortable camp in Sweetwaters and have a tasty dinner in the spacious dining room.

  • Accommodation: Tented Safari Camp at Sweetwaters (Ol Pejeta)
  • Activities: Visit Sweetwaters Game Reserve & Chimpanzee Sanctuary
  • Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4: Ol Pejeta to Samburu National Reserve – Kenya

This morning we have breakfast at the tented camp before setting off for Samburu National Reserve. We drive further north to our tented lodge inside the Buffalo Springs Game Reserve, bordering Samburu. Along the way, we are likely to spot wildlife and birds, so keep your eye peeled.

Arriving at our lodge lunch is served in the restaurant overlooking the Ewaso Nyiro River and Samburu National Reserve on the opposite banks, with the towering Ol Olokwe Mountain in the background. After lunch, we embark on an afternoon game drive in Buffalo Springs or Samburu National Reserve. Here we look out for rare and unusual animals like the long-necked gerenuk, Grevy's zebra, Somali ostrich, beisa oryx, and reticulated giraffe. Other wildlife found here includes elephants, lions, wild dogs, cheetahs, hippos, hyenas, warthogs, and a variety of antelope species. Twitchers will also be enthralled with over 450 bird species found in the Samburu ecosystem.

After our rewarding game drive, we return to our tented lodge overlooking the Ewaso Nyiro River and Samburu National Reserve for dinner and a laid-back evening in the Kenyan wilderness.

  • Accommodation: Tented Safari Lodge in Buffalo Springs (Samburu)
  • Activities: Afternoon Game Drive in Samburu Ecosystem

Day 5 & 6: Samburu National Reserve – Kenya

The next two days of our senior trip are spent on safari in Samburu National Reserve.

We'll set off on early morning and later afternoon game drives to explore Samburu while the animals are at their most active. Then during the heat of the day, we retreat to our comfortable tented camp. In between game drives you are free to swim in the pool, rest in your spacious tented room overlooking the river, and relax in the lounge and camp areas with viewing decks.

Samburu National Reserve is a lesser-known Kenya safari gem offering an uncrowded game-viewing experience. This arid game reserve is home to unusual animal species adapted to its dry and rugged environment. You can also see elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and African wild dogs here. In addition to the big mammals and the Special 5 of Samburu, the reserve boasts an impressive array of birds, from kestrels and falcons to ostriches and whistling ducks. In the evenings we enjoy a dinner buffet and unwind at the tented lodge beside the river.

  • Accommodation: Tented Safari Lodge in Buffalo Springs (Samburu)
  • Activities: Morning & Afternoon Game Drives in Samburu National Reserve
  • Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner (x2)

Day 7: Samburu to Masai Mara National Reserve – Kenya

Day seven begins with breakfast overlooking Samburu. Then you are transferred to the Shaba airstrip, game viewing en route. Here you catch your flight to Masai Mara National Reserve in a small, fixed-wing plane.

From the Masai Mara airstrip, you are transferred to your next tented safari camp in a 4x4 safari vehicle. Arriving at the tented camp, settle in and enjoy lunch beside the Mara River. The tented camp is located in Masai Mara National Reserve along the Mara River, which attracts a variety of animals and birds year-round. This afternoon we venture out on our first 4x4 game drive in the famous Masai Mara National Reserve. One of the best game reserves in Africa, Masai Mara is often rated as the top safari destination on the continent. This Kenya national reserve is home to high densities of wildlife, offering outstanding game viewing throughout the year.

After our thrilling game drive, return to camp for dinner and a good night's rest in your spacious luxury safari tent.

Your expert safari guide takes you in search of the rich diversity of animals found here, including the Big 5 of Africa (lion, rhino, leopard, elephant, and buffalo).

Our morning game drives are followed by lunch back at the tented camp beside the Mara River and free time to relax. As the day cools, we venture back out on late afternoon game drives in search of the animals that begin to stir again. You also have the option of taking a hot-air balloon safari in Masai Mara as an optional extra activity (at extra cost). This once-in-a-lifetime experience is highly recommended! Floating above the plains of Masai Mara is an excellent way to spot wildlife and admire the landscapes.

Wildebeest Great Migration Explained

Please note that the Wildebeest Great Migration is seasonal. As a natural wildlife phenomenon, it is fluid and unpredictable. For this reason, seeing the Great Migration cannot be guaranteed.

The wildebeest and other wild herbivores migrate between Masai Mara in Kenya and Serengeti in Tanzania. These herds move in a massive circular route covering some 1200 miles (1931km). It is a continuous movement of wildlife that can be seen in different areas at different times of the year. During certain phases of this annual trek the animals disperse or slow down, whilst at other times the migration picks up speed, with the herds becoming larger and denser. Not only does the Wildebeest Great Migration vary from place to place and season to season but the movement of these large wildlife herds varies from year to year.

Please talk to a travel expert from African Budget Safaris about seeing the Wildebeest Great Migration on your safari to find out more. Also, check out our detailed article about the Great Migration in Serengeti and Masai Mara.
