For family vacations, East and Southern Africa are the best regions to visit with kids. The safari countries in these regions host the most famous wildlife destinations and have the most established travel industries. In East Africa, Kenya and Tanzania are best for family safaris and in Southern Africa, our top recommendations are South Africa, Botswana and Namibia. Each of these countries features accessible Big Five national parks, good infrastructure and excellent family-friendly accommodation.
Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Botswana and Namibia all offer exceptional Big Five safari experiences and the chance to see your favourite Disney animal characters, from Pumbaa to Simba, in the flesh.

Travel times in Africa can be great. Take into account how well your children travel over long distances when deciding between remote and more accessible destinations.
Guided group safaris are open to families with children but are not exclusively designed or operated for families with kids. On group safari holidays, families travel with people of various ages from different walks of life. If you want a tailor-made safari just for you and your family, talk to one of our travel experts.
Malaria is a risk in many safari areas. There are however effective anti-malaria precautions and medications which make travelling to these areas safe, particularly in low-risk malaria seasons. Malaria areas are not recommended for families with young children (under 8 years). The good news is that large parts of Namibia and South Africa are completely malaria free, along with areas of Botswana and other safari countries. To get you started, see our blog post on Family-friendly Safaris to Malaria Free Game Parks in South Africa.
Certain activities are age restricted on African safaris which can be limiting for younger families. For families travelling with teenagers and kids over the age of 8, there are more choices available. Most activities, including gorilla trekking, are open to youngsters over the age of 16 years. Choosing family-oriented lodges and tours can make a big difference, as they offer more alternative activities for young children.

The cream of the crop, a Tailor-made Family Safari is custom designed to meet your family’s particular interests, needs and preferences. With a customised family safari package, you get to decide what works best for your family based on your specifications, abilities and ages.
Bespoke tours can be arranged as private family safaris, the ultimate in tailored family holidays, or as part of group safaris with private game drives and activities. Private family safari holidays will usually cost more than both group or partially-shared tours, yet can be surprisingly affordable.
On a customised safari package, you can visit the destinations that appeal to you most and embark on activities that match your interests and hobbies. You can focus more on cultural experiences and historical highlights, or take more walking and cycling trips, or ask for more interactive activities like wildlife-tracking walks for your kids to learn more about animals and nature.
The benefits of tailor-made safaris in Africa are that you’ll spend more time doing what you want (like watching lions) and less time doing what you don’t want (such as driving long distances). Your tour itinerary will be designed to be exciting for you and your family, breaking long drives with interesting stops and staying at lodges that suit your travel budget and tastes.
Tailor-made Family Safaris are best for families wanting to take time out together and explore specific interests and destinations. The private family safari holiday is ideal for taking a break from socialising and focussing on quality family time.
